Khan Academy is a nonprofit organization with the mission to provide a free, world class education for anyone, anywhere

Education is a fundamental human right. Every child has the potential to grow and learn. Yet millions of students and their teachers do not have access to the tools and resources necessary to unlock learners’ full potential. Our goal is to serve the students who need us most

Page 20: Scaling-up digital learning to accelerate progress towards SDG4

Founded by Salman Khan, born in New Orleans,

Louisiana and raised by his single mom

Aug 2004: Sal began remotely tutoring his cousin Nadia

in math after his day job as a hedge fund analyst

Aug 2006: Sal posted his first YouTube videos. They

went viral

Dec 2007: Khan was incorporated as a 501c(3)

non-profit

Sep 2010: thanks to large grants from Google and the

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Khan Academy began

its growth

Aug 2016: Duck Duck Moose, now Khan Academy Kids,

became part of Khan Academy

2021: Khan has 200+ employees that are working on

improving technology and content

Over the years Khan Academy evolved from just math videos to a comprehensive mastery-based tool used both at home and in classrooms around the world

"I wanted to teach the way I wished that I myself had been taught. I hoped to convey the sheer

joy of learning, the thrill of understanding things about the universe."See more about our origins at Sal's TED Talk

Offline Learning

The Learning Passport’s Offline Model enables learners and teachers to continue their education in low to no connectivity areas, helping to bridge the digital learning gap.

The offline model utilises two concepts to provide digital learning experiences in areas without connectivity.

1) Hub/Learner Device ConceptA hub device located in an offline classroom serves as a 1) Server and 2) Local Area Network (LAN) Learners will be able to connect their devices such as phones or tablets to the hub device via a web browser on their device.

Page 64: Scaling-up digital learning to accelerate progress towards SDG4

12

2) Sneakernet Concept

The hub device will be intermittently synced to download new content and upload learners’ record through the physical transport of data on storage devices.

Data from portable storage devices will then be synced to an online database at connectivity points.
