SCAIHS STUDENT RECOGNITIONSSCAIHS students are doing wonderful things! If your students have received awards or

special recognitions, please let us know so we can include their accomplishments in future issues of SCAIHS Advantage.

Congratulations to the following SCAIHS students:

Daniel and Mary Kathryn Davidson, for being published in the Richland Library 2016 Kids in Print literary magazine. Out of hundreds of submissions, only 68 were selected to be published. Mary Kathryn’s drawing, "Snow on Snow," was published, and Daniel’s poem and a photograph of the Library of Congress titled "Inspirational" were published. Both the drawing and the photograph are being exhibited at the downtown Richland Library.

Jack and Janna Claire Horchler, who hosted a bake sale for Hope for Justice, a group that exists to end human trafficking. The Horchler family was visiting First Baptist Church of Hampton on a Wednesday night when their son, Jack, attended Youth on Mission. The topic was human trafficking and Jack came home with a lot of questions. After some research, the Horchlers found the Christian organization, Hope for Justice, and hosted a bake sale. The sale was scheduled from 8-12, but they sold out before 11:00 a.m. According to Jack

and Janna's parents, the kids are ready to do another bake sale.

Caleb Ashworth (third from left) and the PAC Panthers JV Basketball team, for being the 2016 South Carolina Home School Athletic Association State Champions.

Hannah Cambre, who attended a four day Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge at Midlands Tech-Harbison. While attending the workshop, Hannah won second place in an essay contest about "The Laws of Life."

Kristen Boatwright and Micah Metts, who were chosen to represent SCAIHS at Palmetto Girls State and Daniel Davidson and John Will Hutcheson who were chosen to represent SCAIHS at Palmetto Boys State.

Boys Stateby Daniel Davidson

If you imagine going to college, joining a major sports team, enlisting in the military, and running for Congress all in the same week, you imagine an experience very like Boys State.

I arrived expecting that Boys State would be just another summer camp, complete with sports, choir, and some political activity. I could not have been more wrong. At Boys State, the entire student body elects its own government from the ranks of police officer to city councilman to governor. The coolest part of the experience, in my opinion, was on Tuesday when the city, county, and state officials (with the notable exception of the state executive branch) took office and began to run Boys State.

The elected officials belong to one of two political parties, the Nationalists and the Federalists. After Tuesday, the counselors and instructors played a less active role in managing us. On the first day, I met the rest of my "city" and spent my time making friends and preparing to run for a political office. I was elected to represent my city at the Nationalist Party Platform Convention on Tuesday, and I chose to join the House Committee on Taxation, and I worked with my fellow Nationalists to create a tax plan for our party. Additionally, I joined the Boys State Chorus and we had the privilege of singing the National Anthem in front of Boys State, Girls State, and Governor Nikki Haley. I also played on my city's dodgeball team.

That sums up my experience at Boys State, but unless you have attended Boys or Girls State it is very difficult to adequately describe the atmosphere, the camaraderie, and the exhilaration that comprise Boys State. Boys State has undoubtedly changed my life and I am grateful to SCAIHS for sending me.

We Are Boys StateJohn Will Hutcheson

One of the biggest questions I had when I arrived at Palmetto Boys State on Sunday morning was, “Why am I here?” I was one of the first guys to reach the steps of my city’s dorm building, and as the rest of the guys moved in, I started to feel a little overwhelmed. There were 46 boys in my city, and I only somewhat knew one of them. Our first days together were shaky to say the least.

We were all trying to learn new chants for our city and for some odd reason that none of us cared to know, we were supposed to shout these chants at the top of our lungs everywhere we went. Yes, we chanted everywhere we went.

Then something happened. By the end of day 3, we all started to chant louder and chant more in tune with one another. Was it because we had all just started to learn the chants better? No, it was because we had all started to bond together as a group better. From that point on, the week passed by more quickly than any I can remember.

We won chant battles, a best spirit award, a clean city award, and we competed in many athletic events together. By Friday night we had become more than friends, we had become a city of brothers. We cried together on Friday night while everyone told the stories of their life, and we cried again on Saturday morning as we all graduated and became official members of the Boys State family.

So, what did I take away from Palmetto Boys State? It has given me a better sense of my country’s heritage and what my grandfather and others fought for. But the best word to explain what I took away from Boy State is brotherhood.

As we all yelled, “We are, Boys State,” for the last time, we knew that we would never forget the bonds that we created over that one week in the June, and we take with us the challenge to serve – whether in our city, county, state or beyond, we know that we are the people who shape our nation’s future.

My Palmetto Girls State Experienceby Micah Metts

I never believed past delegates to Palmetto Girls State when they said that Girls State will change your life, but it truly did change mine. Girls State built my self-confidence, taught me how our government works, and gave me life-long best friends. Even though I only slept five hours a night, I loved every minute. I was a part of Brown city, Bell county, and of course, Palmetto state. In one week, we set up a government and elected officials to run our fictitious state. I had the honor of serving on Brown City Council.

Friday was definitely the most fun day because we traveled to the State House to inaugurate our elected governor and other constitutional officers. I will never forget Friday night when all of the girls in my city were crying together because we did not want to leave each other. In one week, we became basically as close as family, and I will forever be thankful to SCAIHS for sending me. Palmetto Girls State was definitely a week that I will never forget.

Palmetto Girls State by Kristen Boatwright

Last week, I had the privilege of representing SCAIHS at Palmetto Girls State. While I was there, I ran for and was elected to City Council; ran for the House of Representatives; sang lots of songs; made tons of friends; heard several speakers; and did things I never thought that I would be able to do.

I was blessed to be in a great city with some great girls who I know will always be there for me. I learned so much during my week there and had so much fun.

Palmetto Girls State was such a great and inspiring experience that I will remember and cherish for the rest of my life.
