St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School

We had a very busy (but positive) first half of the school year here at St. Kateri Tekakwitha. The involvement and enthusiasm of staff, students and families has been amazing. We are well along the way to building a positive, faith filled community with the common interest of developing our students: mind, body and soul.

Our winter has been quite busy with many extra-curricular activities, including Student Representative Council, Volleyball, Track, a Games Club, our Skipping Demonstration team, Basketball, Track and countless classroom outings and activities. Our Advent season, leading up to the celebration of the Birth of Christ, was fantastic. We had school liturgies and a Christmas concert, “Miracle on Bethlehem Street”. We are so grateful to the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Staff for all their hard work and creativity to engage our students to become lifelong learners and for teaching our students to treat each other with love and respect, honoring the Gospel Virtues.

Don’t forget: It’s time to register for Kindergarten! For the 2018-2019 school year, we will be offering full day/alternating day classes, (either Monday, Wednesday and alternating Fridays or Tuesday, Thursday and alternating Fridays) If your child will be five-years-old before January 31, 2019, he or she can begin kindergarten in September 2018. Early registration helps us in our preliminary planning of staffing allocations.

The “Friends of St. Kateri Tekakwitha School” parent council has also been very active volunteering, fundraising and supporting our educational goals; as well as planning family engagement evenings, such as a “Car-less Drive in Movie” night and an upcoming school bingo.

The St. Kateri Tekakwitha Playground Association has also been extremely busy with numerous fundraisers and did a fantastic job in the planning of our new playground which is now installed and being enjoyed by our students and the community. Fundraising continues so that we can install a second playground. Keep up to date on their fundraising activities on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/1708102769503855/about/

Not all these amazing things happen without parent volunteers. If you are interested in helping out in any way, just contact us at the office and we will connect you with the appropriate contact, based on your interest.

God Bless,

K. Gauthier and J. Kish (Administration team) and the staff of St. Kateri Tekakwitha School

Gardening for Privacy by Lyndon Penner

“I want to plant something that will give me some privacy from the neighbours…” is a request I hear frequently from clients and customers. Given that it is now normal to put up two houses in the same amount of space where we used to put just one, people have developed an almost pathological need for privacy. This is understandable, but in our “instant gratification” world, this has led to some really terrible landscaping choices.

Getting Started

When attempting to embark on any landscaping projects, the first question that should be asked is “what is the main purpose of this yard?” Is the purpose of this yard to grow food for your family? Is the purpose to have an outdoor area to entertain guests and have barbeques? Is it so that your children will have a place to play? These are all questions that inform your choices about what you put in the yard. For example, if you want to grow prize winning roses, trees that are going to create privacy will also likely create shade, which would not be in your best interest for the aforementioned roses. If you have small children and pets, you may want to avoid planting things with sharp thorns or spines or plants that are known to be very poisonous. Asking yourself “what is the yard for?” is actually a critical question. It helps you prioritize and make good choices when you go to the nursery to buy trees or shrubs.

Better Choices

If you drive through a new neighbourhood anywhere in Saskatchewan, the first tree you’ll notice is the columnar Swedish aspen. These are tall, skinny trees that are shaped like exclamation marks. They are by far the most commonly planted tree because they grow fast and can handle almost any soil. These are the only virtues they have. So, what are some good alternatives?

If you need a narrow, more column shaped tree you actually have lots of options available. These are better choices than columnar aspens because they provide more colour, better shape, and often feed local (small) wildlife such as pollinators and songbirds. They are also less maintenance because they do not sucker or attract aphids. Some of them also have good winter interest.

The word "fastigiate" means narrow and erect in Latin, and you will often see it on the tags and labels of such trees and shrubs. This includes the wonderfully blue columnar spruce (Picea pungens 'fastigiata'), columnar Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris 'fastigiata'), and columnar mountain ash (Sorbus aucuparia 'fastigiata'). There are also good narrow birch trees such as 'Dakota Pinnacle' and 'Parkland Pillar', columnar crabapples (including 'Gladiator' and 'Emerald Spire'), and the columnar Saskatoon berry, 'Standing Ovation'. It produces little in the way of fruit but both the flowers and fall colour are delightful. The columnar caragana 'Sutherland' was actually developed in Saskatoon in the 1940's and has a terrific V shape, and doesn't become weedy like the old hedge caraganas.

(Gardening for Privacy continued…)

What about using ‘Mammoth Russian’ sunflowers to create “instant privacy”? Why not put up some lattice and grow scarlet runner beans as a screen between you and the neighbours? You can eat the beans, the flowers feed hummingbirds, and a packet of seeds is $3.00. (Yes, you can just grow them from seed!)

Considering the Future

It is important to remember that the healthiest forests are the most diverse, and this is true of our “urban forests” as well. If we just plant exactly the same thing as our neighbours, if a pest or a disease comes along, we’ll lose all of them. It also means our neighbourhoods aren’t as interesting or beautiful as they could be. If your neighbour plants a larch, why don’t you plant a willow? If your neighbour plants a fir, maybe you want to try a pear tree or a Russian olive.

7

Take your time with deciding because a tree is going to outlive you. It’s a permanent feature (more or less) in the landscape, and thoughtfulness will serve you well. Privacy long term is better than privacy instantly, and you’ll be happier in the long run and your neighbourhood will be better for it.
