SC ALPHA Chapter Goals for 2011-2012 The SC Alpha chapter of Tau Beta Pi sought to continue efforts of holding less projects but having higher attendance. Also the projects provided were set toward a goal of networking with other majors and representatives from all engineering disciplines while still having fun and enjoyable projects. We also wished to get our name out in the community and school more while instilling professional development by selling t-shirts and participating in projects with freshman to ensure that they chose the major that was most appropriate for them. We also sought to hold not only our prospective members to a certain amount of accountability but also our current members as they were required to maintain a high standard of service, professional, and social activities. Throughout this report, it is clearly evident that SC Alpha had a successful year. While fall attendance seemed to decrease, our spring involvement and rebirth of activities inspired the chapter to attend events and help younger students. Most importantly, current and eligible members were able to interact at every event, thus fostering a sense of community within our chapter. It is fair to say that SC Alpha has surely obtained “Excellence in Engineering.”
Service. Character.
Achievement. Leadership. Professionalism. Honor. Accountability.

Chapter Project Report
Project name: Advisory Board Meetings Date(s) of Project: Weekly Meetings on Wednesdays from 12:20-1:20pm Project area: Chapter Number of persons who participated in this project: 16 Officers: 12 Advisors: 4 Participants: Officers – Christy Darling, Molly Townsend, Laura Wiles, Jackson Turbeville, Garrison Stevens, Edward Sullivan, Cody Lang, Brown Farinholt, Kristen Doolittle, Connor Pencek, Laura Reese, Lauren Eskew, Louis Hill; Advisors - Dr. Elizabeth Stephan, Dr. Steven Brandon, Prof. John Minor Hours spent on this project (per meeting): 2
Organizing: 1 Participating: 1 I. General Description: Weekly meetings were held over lunch to discuss events and ideas. The
purpose of these meetings was to keep a form of open communication between the officers and to report back how successful/unsuccessful an event was. Also events were kept track of and all project due dates were made known at this meeting. The advisors gave valuable feedback to the ideas of the officers.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The purpose was to provide an opportunity for the officers to get to know each other and to learn how to work together to lead the chapter effectively and efficiently. This allowed us to share ideas weekly and to keep on track with our yearly goals, and inform each other of what we were doing or wished to do as a part of TBP.
III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group? NO)
We met in Holtzendorf M-10 every Wednesday (as necessary) from 12:20-1:20pm. Planning for events occurred and ideas on how to increase participation and structure the chapter were discussed.
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: No costs. V. Special Problems: No problems arose in this event due to careful planning and preparation. VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The meetings were a major contributor to the success
we had as a chapter throughout the year. It seemed that all of the officers enjoyed getting to know one another and learned a lot about working together and sharing ideas. These meetings were a great way to stay organized with current projects and to discuss innovative ideas for new projects, especially when emailing about the ideas became too confusing.

inability to meet at advisory board meetings. At these meetings much of the new member organization and responsibility was covered. Also this time was used to discuss action items for the President. Towards the end of the semester when participation was not at its highest discussion occurred to determine how to increase participation in the spring semester. Also this time was held as a debriefing of the National Convention as the President was unable to attend but wished to know all the information learned and shared at convention.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The purpose was to provide an opportunity for the vice president to understand what was going on at the weekly advisory meetings. Also, was used to discuss action items, and is helpful for the vice president to see what the president must complete and think about on a weekly basis if he were to become president-elect in the upcoming year. The semester-ly goals were kept close and were discussed as the semester continued to move forward.
III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group? NO)
We met in Dr. Stephan’s Office every Tuesday (as necessary) from 1:00-1:45pm. Planning for events and keeping an open line of communication between the Advisors, President and Vice President.

achieve that objective as members used their skills to serve organizations and families and to raise awareness about issues
present in our local community. In addition, this event helped our chapter’s members to learn more about events in the area,
ways they can help others, and common issues in our local community. This event also helped to encourage interactions
between our current and prospective members.
III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group? Yes)
This event was organized by the Oconee County Humane Society.
Our members volunteered during the set-up and breakdown of the event as well as during the event.
Our participation in the event was organized by contacting the humane society to see if they needed volunteers for the
event after first finding out about the event. Over the next few weeks, we corresponded several times via email and
phone in order to set up the roles our members would fill during the event itself.
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: None.
V. Special Problems: No problems arose in this event due to careful planning and preparation.
VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Overall, the event went quite well. Many people from the community participated
in the event with their dogs; many more people attended the event than originally expected. Our volunteers were a significant
help to the humane society at Howl O Ween as we were the only group volunteering in addition to the humane society staff
and volunteers. During the raffle, we were able to sell several hundred dollars of tickets, which will be very helpful for the
animal shelter. A couple of our members also made the various dog contests run more effectively by lining up participants
and serving as runners or messengers. Our members enjoyed volunteering at the event and enjoyed helping the humane
society staff and volunteers. Several of the staff also thanked us and passed on complements from many of the participants
about our group.

Organizing: 4 Participating: 3 I. General Description: Current and prospective members from the SC Alpha Tau Beta Pi chapter volunteered at a
shelter spruce-up event held at the Oconee County Humane Society. Volunteers spent an afternoon helping with
various activities to clean and spruce up various areas in the animal shelter, including the lobby and cat room. The
group helped by completing various tasks such as assembling furniture, preparing rooms to be painted, and
painting two rooms at the humane society.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: One of the objectives for our chapter is for our members to
perform community service activities both on Clemson’s campus and within the surrounding local community.
This project helped to achieve that objective as members used their skills to serve the local animal shelter. In
addition, this event helped our chapter’s members to learn more about issues in the area, ways they can help

III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group? Yes)
This event was organized by the Oconee County Humane Society. Our members volunteered the afternoon of the Shelter Spruce-Up event. Our participation in the event was set up by first contacting the humane society several weeks prior to the event, and then several times via email and phone during the following weeks in order to schedule dates, times, and the tasks our volunteers would complete.
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: None.
V. Special Problems: No special problems arose in this event due to careful planning and preparation.
VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Our members spent the first hour of the event assembling shelves and
storage furniture from IKEA. Afterwards, we prepared the main lobby and cat room for painting by washing all of
the doors and walls, taping off the trim and windows, sanding different flat surfaces, and moving all of the cats
from their room into another area. Unfortunately, the painter arrived later than expected so painting was started
later than originally planned. Despite that, most of the volunteers had the opportunity to help paint the walls
inside. Overall, participating in this event was a rewarding and worthwhile experience; however, some additional
planning and organization on the shelter's part might have allowed us to use our time and manpower there more
efficiently.

Project name: Election Meeting (Of Prospective Members) Date of Project: October 25, 2011 Project area: Chapter
Number of persons who participated in this project: 75 Members: 72 Advisors: 3 Participants: See attached Attendance Record Hours spent on this project: 2
Organizing: 1 Participating: 1 I. General Description: All current members of SC-A gathered to vote on Prospective Members and on
Constitution changes made at National Convention. Afterwards, the members interacted with one another over a dinner of pizza. Unfortunately Quorum was not met so an online election ballot was made (and is described in the next report). A t-shirt chair was elected (Garrison Stevens) to run all of the Friday T-shirt Sales and allow Molly Townsend, who was currently heading that project, to focus on her elected task of cataloguer. Also, the money from our t-shirts was voted on and we will be giving a charitable amount to Emerson’s Rose, a foundation for children with heart defects that was founded by a former Clemson University Engineering advisors whose child died of a heart defect.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The purpose was to vote on the Prospective Members
and to decide if they met all requirements to be initiated into our chapter.
III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group? NO) The Vice President prepared the presentation of the Prospective Members to be explained and
voted on by all current members. The Social Chairs ordered pizza and drinks for dinner.
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: The cost for this meeting was pizza and drinks which was paid for
with chapter funds. V. Special Problems: Quorum was not met due to not enough people attending. Due to a slight fall in
participation this semester the members were given the opportunity to provide feedback of what they would like to attend next semester. We also told them that if participation does not increase we cannot continue to be a chapter. Good feedback was given and we hope to increase participation next semester.
VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The election was unsuccessful but the rest of the meeting
was very successful. A t-shirt chair was elected and the scholarship and fellowships were announced to the chapter.

Number of persons who participated in this project: 1 Members: 1 Advisors: 0 Participants: Christy Darling Hours spent on this project: 1
Organizing: 1 Participating: 1 I. General Description: Due to the bent on campus being concrete and un-noticed we decorated it with
holiday lights during December to boost holiday pride on campus. The lights used were solar LED Christmas lights that would turn on when the sun went down and charge throughout the day using solar energy. The lights were put on after Thanksgiving, and were taken down upon arrival for second semester. The lights hopefully brought attention to the bent and also brought holiday cheer to students, especially during finals week.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives
of TBP: The purpose was for PR and also bringing holiday cheer to campus
III. Organization & Administration: President purchased and hung
lights. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: $40
for two strands of solar LED lights (but they were kept for future use)
V. Special Problems: Must attach the
lights with zip ties so that the strands are not messed with. Also, must occasionally check to ensure the lights are working and no lines are cut.
VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Overall was a success. A few days of lighting were lost due to some cords being cut but they were repaired and the lights continued to work.

To: Emerson Rose Heart Foundation
Attn: Susan and Jason Smith
Dear Susan and Jason Smith:
I am writing to you on behalf of the Clemson University Tau Beta Pi Engineering honors society. Mrs. Smith, as engineering students of Clemson we greatly appreciated all of the time you had spent advising us as younger students going through the general engineering program. We recently heard of your family’s foundation and wanted to help out as much as we could, so we started selling T-shirts every Friday to perspective Clemson University engineering students. From the profits of these t-shirts we were able to contribute $500 to the Emerson Rose Heart Foundation! We completed the donation via the internet this morning using the treasurers name “Edward Sullivan”. We again just wanted to thank you for everything you have done for us and for Clemson University. We will also be contributing to your foundation again after the spring semester, as finding a cure to congenital heart defects is an ongoing problem and a cure needs to be found.
We have sent two t-shirts in this package. They are the t-shirts we have been selling to raise the money. I hope they fit! Please let me know if you need a different shirt. In the spring we will have new designs due to these shirts being such a hit.
We all hope to see in the future that through your foundation that congenital heart defects are cured! I hope you have a festive, fun, and loving holiday season.
Sincerely,
Tau Beta Pi SC Alpha President

Holtzendorff Hall and worked on polishing the metal bents that are given to members. Current members
continued working on their bents as before, while prospective members were given their bents for the very first
time.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: One of the main purposes of these event was to give Tau Beta Pi
members a chance to polish their bents using tools and other materials that otherwise would be costly to an
individual. The polishing of metal is a good skill for any engineer to have. Prospective members were also given a
bent so that they could see a Tau Beta Pi tradition for themselves. Also, members were given a chance to socialize
and build relationships with fellow members.
III. Organization & Administration: No
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: None.
V. Special Problems: No problems arose in this event due to careful planning and preparation.
VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): The bent polishing events were a success as a total of 71 current and
prospective members came over the semester to show their enthusiasm for these events that are truly a special part
of any Tau Beta Pi member’s experience in the society. Members had fun learning and laughing with other
members and administrators as well. Overall, the event was a great success.

Project name: Engineering Expo Date(s) of Project: February 23rd, 2012 Project area: Community/Liberal Culture, University/College, Profession/Engineering, Chapter/Social, Education/Professional Development
Number of persons who participated in this project: # Members: # 16 Prospectives: # 2 Advisors: # 2 Participants: See attached Attendance Record Hours spent on this project: # 20
Organizing: # 15 Participating: # 5 I. General Description: The Engineering Expo is the main event hosted by Tau Beta Pi during
Engineering and Science Week. This event hosted 140 second graders from Clemson Elementary as well
as 15 Clemson organizations offering interactive engineering and science activities ranging from the
understanding of fluid viscosity in a fluids race to understanding the dynamics of flight through paper
airplane models. Each activity was targeted towards the children in order to stimulate their imagination
and spark an interest in science and math.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: TBP focuses on excellence and integrity in engineering.
The Engineering Expo introduces a wide array of math and science to children at a very young age
preparing them for majoring in engineering in the future. The Expo also instills a sense of excitement in
the children about STEM programs and offers TBP members a great opportunity to interact with
children in the community.
III. Organization & Administration: In conjunction with another group? Yes
a. Organization of Expo was conducted by two members and overseen by an advisor of Tau Beta
Pi. However, there were 13 organizations and 2 Creative Inquiries that hosted tables at the event
as well as demonstrations conducted by 2 faculty from the Materials Science Department.
b. The organizations that hosted a table were: Engineering World Health, BioMEDS, AOE, Fluor,
WISE, ASME, Materials Research Society, Dr. DesJardins/Kennedy’s Creative Inquiry,
ASCE/SEA, Human Centered Computing, Engineers Without Borders, AIChE and Chi Epsilon.
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements:
a. The total cost was:
i. Bus: $160 from Clemson Elementary
ii. Pizza: $510 from Papa John’s through Aramark
iii. Furniture Rental: $153 arranged for through Hendrix
iv. Total cost = $823
b. 12 Tau Beta Pi volunteers were necessary to ensure that the EXPO moved smoothly. They took
the 2nd
graders to and from the Bob Campbell Geology museum and lunch. They also helped
with serving lunch.
V. Special Problems: No problems arose in this event due to careful planning and preparation.

VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific):
a. The Expo went exceeding well this year. The co-chairs received very positive comments from
the teachers and parent chaperones. Each group was composed of one teacher and/or chaperone
and four children. The group size was perfect for moving around the organization tables. Every
group got to participate in every organization project and they even had a little extra time to visit
their favorite booths a second time. The planetarium was newly renovated so it was a special
treat for the students. They also greatly enjoyed visiting the planetarium.
b. This year we expanded the agenda slightly to incorporate viewing of the “My Robot is Better
than your Robot” Video as well as a 20 minute demonstration for the MS&E department on
visualizing sound waves and making plasma in the microwave. The students really enjoyed the
demos and Vickery was the perfect place for the demonstrations. We contemplated having it in
McKissick but it wasn’t free to reserve while Vickery was.
c. Logistics: The organizations were asked to come 30 minutes in advance and they were all ready
for the 2nd
graders when they came. The school informed us a few days in advance that the 2nd
graders wouldn’t be able to make it at 9 am, but 9:30 am at the earliest. This skewed our
volunteering times for Clemson students. However, there were plenty of TBP volunteers.
Volunteers were TBP members that received one credit for volunteering. Each member is
required to attend two events per semester to earn two credits. I was pleasantly surprised when
volunteers from the organizations helped serve lunch to the 2nd
graders. This helped the event run
smoothly.
d. The event was efficient and ran very smoothly. There were no problems and everyone involved
had a wonderful time, especially the 2nd
graders and the Clemson students.

Greenville, SC. Learned about more efficiently leading and organizing the group, and received good ideas about what kind of projects to participate in and how to increase member participation.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Learning how to better run our chapter and sharing
ideas with other chapters. Also provide camaraderie and communication amongst the chapters in the D5
area
III. Organization & Administration: We had to organize and plan all of the specifics of the District
Conference. We decided to stay in downtown Greenville, SC because of its proximity to the GSP
airport. We booked conference rooms in the Hilton and made room reservations in the same home for
convenience and ease of access. We provided dinner the first night and breakfast the first morning all
catered by the hotel
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Costs were all reimbursed by Districts. They included flight, food
outside of the meals provided, and hotel accommodations
V. Special Problems: None
VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Very successful. Learned a lot about our chapter and how it
relates to other chapters in the south east. We began to plan for next semester, what events etc, and that

Tentative Plan for Next Semester:
Doodle Poll in April to find time to meet so that the advisors can block that time out just for TBP
First week or two of class have engineering futures about team chartering to bring together the new officers (open this up to other engineering based societies)
First week of September have an officers meeting (set dates), get eligibility list and send out emails
Soon after have the prospective members meeting Host a couple Bent polishing Host at least one social Update Website (model after Georgia Alpha) Convention: Sept 27-29 Have one mindset mainly for Clemson Elementary on the weekend before
Halloween (?) Have Voting Meeting around Halloween time (Mon Oct 31st?) In November have a food drive, that includes ALL DEPARTMENTS, not just general
engineering Mid of November have Initiation (Thurs Nov 8?) Also, to ensure participation start recording the points people earn by attending
events, and giving free TBP cords to those members that come to at least 2 activities and 2 meetings throughout both semesters before graduation.
To do this we will elect more chairs:
Bent Polishing Chair Mind set chair (and put Dr Kurz in charge of this as an advisor?) Ensure that recording secretary take over the project forms and developing the
spiral bound book Good Web designer (and put Prof Minor as the advisor to this to help the new
webmaster)

Project name: Trivia and Ice cream Night Date(s) of Project: 6 March 2012 Project area: Chapter/Social
Number of persons who participated in this project: # Members: # 31 Prospectives: # 11 Advisors: #2 Participants: See attached Attendance Record Hours spent on this project: # 4
Organizing: #2 Participating: #2 I. General Description: We hosted a trivia night for prospective and current TBP members
to provide an opportunity for them to socialize and relax in the middle of the semester.
We provided food and refreshments. We asked general questions, of varying difficulty
through three rounds with increasing point values each round. The winner was selected
based on their total.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: This event brought Tau Bates together in
a social and relaxed environment, distracting them for at least a couple of hours from the
stress of obtaining an engineering degree. The relaxation aspect of Trivia Night is
essential, as it occurred around midterm time, when the stress among engineering
students is quite high. By relaxing and distracting them, we allowed them to return to
their work with renewed vigor, with the added bonus of having socialized with fellow
Tau Bates.
III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group? Yes or NO)
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: None.
V. Special Problems: No problems arose in this event due to careful planning and
preparation.
VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Trivia Night went very well. Turnout was
great, considering that it was not a mandatory event. Everyone seemed to enjoy the
competition, and nobody was working on homework or studying during it. All the food
was eaten and then disposed of. Next year, we probably going to do this again. Obviously
Trivia Night is already a great addition to the TBP social calendar, because it combines
competition with socializing. It relaxes otherwise very stressed students.

Number of persons who participated in this project: # Members: 4 Prospectives: 3 Advisors: 0 Participants: See attached Attendance Record Hours spent on this project: #
Organizing: 10 Participating: 0 I. General Description: We attempted to set up a Tau Beta Pi team to participate in
Clemson’s Relay for Life event the night of April 13th
.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: One of our chapter’s TBP goals is for our
TBP members to participate in community service activities and to give back to the
community. Participating in Relay for Life was one way that our members could do so.
III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group? Yes)
i. The majority of the organization and administration for Relay for Life itself was
done by a different organization. Each organization participated by setting up a
team to participate, and one member from that organization served as a team
captain (I served as TBP’s Relay for Life team captain).
ii. As team captain, I was responsible for attending bi-weekly team captain meetings
during second semester. We also had to come up with a tent theme and a fundraiser
for our organization to have funds at the event itself. I also sat up a team online for
our members to join.
iii. Closer to the event itself, I created a Google document for our members to sign up for
shifts online to help with setting up, staying at the tent during the event, and also
cleaning up after Relay ended.
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: None.
V. Special Problems: We had a very difficult time getting our members to sign up for the
event. In the end, we did not have enough volunteers signed up, so we withdrew our TBP
team from Relay for Life.
VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results (Be Specific): Overall, Relay for Life is set up very well by
the outside organizers. They make it easy for organizations to set up a team and
participate in the event itself. However, it was very difficult to get TBP members to sign
up for the event because it is held so close to the end of the year and our members are
generally busy or already committed to volunteering for another organization at Relay. In

the future, a team captain would need to set up additional fundraisers for TBP members

Number of persons who participated in this project: # 2 Members: # 1 Prospectives: # 0 Advisors: # 1 Participants: Professor Minor, Tristan Novak Hours spent on this project: # 15
Organizing: # 15 Participating: # 0 I. General Description: The old light initiation kit was a power hazard with many cords
bring plugged into one box with many light switches, that during a dark initiation
ceremony had to be flipped and manipulated to have the ceremony go off without a hitch.
Tristan Novak an electrical engineering student volunteered to redesign an initiation kit.
Through his electrical knowledge he designed a great initiation light kit in which there
was only one cord and one switch, that light up the lights in order according to the
speaking roles. This allowed the president who is in charge of switching the lights, to not
make any mistakes as the kit is now fool proof.
II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Initiation
III. Organization & Administration: (in conjunction with another group? Yes or NO)
IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Small funds for wires and switches
V. Special Problems: No problems due to an electrical engineering student design and

Winners Essay: My advice to an incoming engineering freshman is two-fold. I would tell them to strike a good academic-social balance in life and also to make a devoted effort to do things right the first time.
I will first expand on living a balanced life. When you look back on your undergraduate career you will want to know that you gave a full effort in the classroom and outside of it. The best thing you can do for yourself is to strike a good balance. Classes are important. And success in the classroom will lead you success in the job application process and success in real world. However the connections you make with people in college are equally important, if not more so. Get involved. Join some kind of organization that suits your interests. It might be a Greek organization, a service organization, an honors society, a club sport, a club centered around a hobby, or a religious organization. Explore the options available to you from the many opportunities that Clemson provides you. When you visit Clemson in 20 years the people you met and the memories you made will mean so much more than any number you had attached to you name as an undergrad. Dr. Stephan always says that the difference between Clemson students and students at XYZ University is that Clemson students are happy students. It’s entirely true. So be sure to engage the opportunities around you and be a happy Clemson student.
That being said I pursued my studies aggressively while still living a balanced life in college and you can manage your time well do the same by striving to abide by a simple notion. When faced with any kind of job or assignment you should be thorough and do it right and do it right the first time. Otherwise you will have to do it twice, once poorly and then once again correctly. It sounds simple but it is a mindset which will save you a great deal of time and effort. This notion is stressed highly in CES first year courses and will be important to you for the rest of your life. The professors stress things that seem small like to you initially like units and showing your work. And at first you say these are not worth you time and get frustrated with the detail work of general engineering. But I ensure you that this is not the stance to take. The detail work of general engineering prepares you for the detail work of your more specific engineering courses. And there is plenty of it. Let me give you an example. During my Junior year in Fluid Mechanics I was working on a lab report. As my partner and I were wrapping it up shortly after midnight I looked closely at our calculations and saw a small but very significant error. I had included the acceleration due to gravity in our calculations as units of m2/s instead of m/s2 and forced other units to be consistent with this. The acceleration due to gravity is something I’m sure you know already from your high school physics class. And I know it too, I assure you. But in the heat of the calculations of a lab report the night before it was due I didn’t think much of it. So at that point I realized we had to make new calculations and new Discussion and Conclusion sections based on those calculations. Unfortunately this re-evaluation lasted late into the wee hours of the morning. Not an ideal situation. In a perfect world I would have considered my units carefully from the beginning and done it right the first time. This is exactly the kind of concept that is taught in CES first year classes. CES will also stress good time management skills. Better use of these would have also helped my situation. Pay attention and take heed of the lessons CES strives to teach you. They will save you time in the future.
