Summer 2020 will look a lot different than planned as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is still going to be a fantastic time of fun, learning, and worship! Online corporate and age-graded worship opportunities will be available throughout the summer, and we encourage you to continue pointing your kids to Jesus as we work to establish appropriate next-steps in what is now a new normal.

Your safety and well-being are foundational to all we offer, and, therefore, we are excited to extend your family this opportunity to participate in our Quest Family Olympics 2020! Competitions will be held in your own home instead of Toyko, so no passports are required! You can also customize your

experience to suit your family’s schedules and needs. In this season of ongoing challenges, we want to choose to focus our attention on God and His enduring love for us. Therefore, each session will be based on our theme verse.

Just as the eternal f lame has been a symbol of Olympic games in the past, it will now serve as a reminder that even amid pandemics, tornados, and all the changes we’ve had to deal with, God’s love endures forever. Whether you have older preschoolers, elementary-aged kids, or middle/high school students, your entire family can celebrate God’s love together and have some awesome fun. Your Next Gen Staff welcomes you to Quest Family Olympics 2020!

Summer 2020 will look a lot different than experience to suit your family’s schedules and

THe games THe peopleANCIENT OLYMPIC GAMES

The ancient Olympic Games began in the Greek valley of Olympia in 776 BC and were dedicated to the Greek God Zeus. Following the conquest of Greece by Rome, Emperor Theodosius I abolished all pagan cults and events after being converted to Christianity. Thus, the ancient Games were abolished after more than 1,000 years of existence.

MODERN OLYMPIC GAMESInspired by the ancient Games, Frenchman Baron Pierre de Coubertin founded the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894 in Paris. Two years later, in 1896, the first Games were held in Athens, Greece, with 241 athletes from 14 nations.

The 2020 Summer Olympics, scheduled for this July, have been postponed until July 2021. The Games will be held in Tokyo, Japan, and are expected to include more than 11,000 athletes from at least 200 nations. Current plans include 39 events in 33 different sports.

2020 SILVERDALE GAMESThe week of June 21 will go down in history as our first-ever Pandemic Olympiad! After a few team huddles, your family will be ready for Opening Ceremonies on Thursday, June 25! There will be easy-to-follow instructions for competitions and four different worship opportunities over the weekend. Then, Sunday evening, June 28, the f lame will be extinguished, and the Games close.

Your Silverdale staff, in particular the Elementary Ministry, NextGen, and Media teams have worked diligently to bring you coverage of this year’s Silverdale Pandemic Olympiad!

coaches and athletes will be preparing for the Games.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE GAMES

CLOSING CEREMONIESBe sure to tune in Sunday night for Closing Ceremonies and keep an eye on

social media to see how you can be involved!

Parent Prayer time Monday - Wednesday, parents will have prompts provided that will guide them as they pray for what God will do in the hearts of their children and their family over the coming week. This is incredibly important. Don’t miss it!

Team HuddleThis is a quick, high-energy time where parents focus the hearts and minds of their team on what they will be learning and doing each day. Team Huddles will happen every day and will be twice a day after opening ceremonies. They should take less than two minutes and have the whole team pumped and ready to go!

Team PrepAfter your Huddle Monday- Wednesday, you will complete one activity that will prepare your team for the Games. Don’t forget to share what you come up with on Facebook and Instagram with #silverdalekids!

OPENING CEREMONIES AND BEYONDBeginning with the Opening Ceremonies, you will be able to access Quest Olympics video content through your email, on the church website (silverdalebc.com), and on Facebook (Silverdale Kids Group), and Instagram (@silverdalekids). Morning Event Videos will be available after 7a each day, and Evening Event Videos will be available after 3p. Each video will prompt you to begin with your Huddle and then go into the Olympic coverage, which includes worship, teaching, and essential information regarding the Olympic Games.

Olympic GamesFollowing each event, your team will have the opportunity to compete in your very own Olympic Games. Instructions are provided in this field guide; and, while minimal supplies are needed, you might want to glance at the supply list for the games before each event to make sure you’re prepared. Want to see how you stack up against other families competing in the Quest Olympics? Post a picture of your scorecard after each event and hashtag it #silverdalekids! But remember, the goal of the games is to have fun and encourage your team members!

Cool DownThe Cool Down is a quick and easy way to reinforce what was taught in each session after you wrap up your games. It’s two simple questions that focus on what your child(ren) learned and how you can apply it as a family. The Cool Down is done best while enjoying popsicles (not required, just highly recommended)!

THE EVENTS AT A GLANCETHE MEDIAYou can find all the media coverage for the Olympic Events at any of the following places:

Visit silverdalebc.com and click on the Quest Family Olympics logo on the home page, or by following our Silverdale Kids Facebook Group, or on Instagram @silverdalekids.

Make sure to follow along on social media for some special “LIVE” events throughout the weekend!

Parent Prayer TimeYou have an incredible privilege this weekend to help lead your child(ren) in a very intentional and memorable time of getting to grow closer in their relationship with Jesus. For some, this might even be the beginning of their relationship with Jesus. How amazing is that?!? Make the choice that you WILL serve the Lord. Let nothing get in the way of that!

Pray this declaration over your family and child(ren) for this week: “Choose this day whom you will serve…but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15) and “No weapon formed against you will stand.” (Isaiah 54:17).

The enemy does not want anything good to happen in the lives of your homes this weekend, so he will do whatever it takes to disrupt, discourage, distract, and divide you. Make a choice starting tonight that no weapon formed against your home will stand!

Parent Prayer TimeAs parents, we have the privilege of seeking God on behalf of each of our children and asking Him to reveal to us who He has created them to be. It’s not about what we want them to be; it’s about who He’s designed them to be!

Pick one or all of the following passages and as you read these verses, ask God to reveal to you the characteristics you see in each of your children:

The Beatitudes: Matthew 5:3-10Which one(s) do I see in each of my children (e.g., do I see mercy, humility, peacemaker, etc.?)

The Attributes of Love: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8How do I see my child(ren) expressing love, or how do I see my child(ren) through the lens of these attributes? (e.g., I see my son/daughter displaying kindness regularly. Or I can tell that my son/daughter is often very self less.)

The Fruits of the Spirit: Galatians 5:22-23What fruit(s) do I see most often within my child(ren)? (e.g., Thank you, God, for showing me that my son/daughter is an excellent example of patience to me, I see that as low-hanging fruit in his/her life.)

Once you’ve identified some of these attributes, begin to affirm and speak these to your child(ren) throughout the week so they can start to see themselves in the way that God sees them. Ultimately as parents, we want to see our child(ren) in this way too!Team Prep

As a family, decide on a team name. You could use your last name, but... don’t you want to make it a little more exciting? Maybe it’s based on a funny family story, or maybe it’s just the craziest thing you can think of! Just remember, you’ll be chanting this name a lot so you may not want to go with something like “The Crazy Rabid Squirrels of Chattanooga, Tennessee in the United States of America!!!” Just a suggestion. Then get together and take a team photo and post it with #silverdalekids so your family can be featured in our Opening Ceremonies! Bonus Points if you make a Team Cheer and share it with #silverdalekids!

Team PrepToday, you make your team f lag and decide on your team mascot! First, decide on your team mascot. Maybe it’s a favorite stuffed animal, a pet, or a younger sibling in a Halloween costume! Get creative! Then, use the fabric markers and supplies from your Olympics kit to create a f lag representing your family. Make sure each member of your family gets to add their touch, even the baby! Just make sure he/she doesn’t eat the markers!

TEAM !GO

Be excited about what God is going to do in your home this weekend!

Parent Prayer TimeYour team. Your tribe. Your crew. Your family! These are the people that you are responsible to and responsible for. The Opening Ceremony is a time for each country to showcase its team before the Olympic officials and the world. This is your time to showcase your child(ren) to Almighty God!

Pray this prayer: “God, You demonstrated Your pride in Your son, Jesus, when You said in Matthew 3:17, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased.’ You know my son(s) or daughter(s) better than I know them. You told me that You formed and knit them in the womb (Psalm 139:13) and that before they were created, You loved them (Jeremiah 1:5). I present to You (say your child(ren)’s name out loud), be pleased with him/her. (This would be an opportunity to brag on them and showcase their accomplishments to the Father.) Thank You for creating and giving him/her to me. We love You, thank You for loving us! In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Parent Prayer TimeYour home IS your Olympic village!

Go to each room in your house and pray over it. For example, pray that your kitchen would be a place where your family gathers for physical nourishment and a relational connection. Pray that your living room would be a place of celebration and a place where lifelong memories are made; pray that each bedroom is protected to be a place of rest and security, etc. (Feel free to call us if you need some creativity for other rooms such as your laundry room, bathroom, etc.)

Olympic Village Activity What you will need: Pillows, Cushions, Chairs, etc.

Thanks for tuning in to the Opening Ceremony of Silverdale’s 2020 Family Olympics! After the ceremony, all the Olympic athletes head back to the Olympic Village to rest, relax, and enjoy time with their team before the Games begin. We want you to do the same! So grab some blankets, pillows, chairs, cushions, whatever you have, and make a fort that will serve as your Olympic Village. See how many family members you can fit inside, and don’t forget to take a picture and share it on Facebook and Instagram with #silverdalekids.

Team PrepHow would your family enter the Olympic arena if you could be there in person? Would you play it cool and be super serious or be total goofballs? Take a video of your own Opening Ceremonies! Grab your f lag and march up your driveway or around your living room. Share your video at #silverdalekids so we can see!

yHuddle: Prepping the FieldOften before games, coaches will walk out to the field and “visualize” the game. They will run through plays and schemes in their minds and prepare themselves for the work ahead. You have an opportunity right now to do something very similar.

Your son(s)/daughter(s) are going to be a part of some amazing things this weekend and you need to be prepared to help them in various ways.

Pray at this time that you would have the wisdom to help answer any questions they might have. Pray that you display a spirit of joy so as to encourage your child(ren) to remain engaged. Pray for your son(s)/daughter(s) by name that God would stir in their hearts and mind a desire to have a lifelong relationship with Jesus.

The Prepping the Field video

will be available after 7a today.

Go the Distance

HANDS-IN: “HUDDLE UP!” “Repeat after me: ‘GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.’ Again, ‘Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.’ One more time, ‘Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His love endures forever.”“Give thanks” on three. 1 ! 2 ! 3 ! “GIVE THANKS!”

PRAY“God, we thank You for this moment. We thank You for this opportunity to compete together and create some lifelong memories together. We thank You for the fun that we are going to get to have. We ask that we would have an attitude of gratitude today and throughout this weekend. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.”

COACHES MOMENT“Take a look around this room and yell out the first thing you see that you’re thankful for!” (Parents, you start by giving an example [e.g., “I’m grateful for this soft carpet or rug that we can stand on!” Or “I’m grateful for this TV that we get to watch this lesson on and that we can watch some movies

on when we have family nights!” Or “I’m grateful for the fan/AC that we have on in the home to help keep us cool!” etc.])

Olympic Warm-Up and Field Prep

EVENT #1GIVE THANKS TO THE LORD

Video will be available after 3p today.

Jump the JordanInstructions: At its narrowest point, the Jordan River is 17 feet wide. On your playing field, walk-off 17 feet (it doesn’t have to be exact!). As you’re walking, explain that the Israelites didn’t cross at the narrowest point of the Jordan. Where they crossed would have been over five times wider! Athletes will compete to see who can jump the farthest across the “Jordan River.” Mark the spot where each athlete

lands and measure by walking off the distance or grabbing your handy measuring tape. Without God’s help, crossing the river would have been impossible for the Israelites! It’s obvious why they gave thanks and wanted to remember God’s faithfulness. Don’t forget to write your scores on the back of the field guide!

Instructions: Crossing the Jordan River was no small task. So many people had to get through, and God had given the priests precise rules about how they needed to carry the Ark of the Covenant. For this event, your team will create an obstacle course with at least four obstacles such as logs to step over, tree branches to duck, cones to zig-zag in and out of, etc. They could also be challenges such as hop on one foot, walk backward, wear a blindfold, etc. These challenges will try to prevent pairs of athletes from crossing from one end of their playing field to another while carrying a water balloon on a washcloth. Each pair

of athletes must keep both hands holding tight to the washcloth with arms extended throughout the whole obstacle course. If you drop the water balloon, you must restart. The goal is to see how many water balloons you can get across the field in two minutes. Don’t forget to write your scores on the back of the field guide.

In case of rain, move Jump the Jordan inside to the largest room in your house or apartment. Then Go the Distance with a ping pong ball on a spoon instead of using a water balloon on a washcloth!

What you will need: Something to mark your jumpers’ spots.

What you will need: Obstacles (get creative!), Water balloons, Bucket or Basket, Washcloth

HANDS-IN: “HUDDLE UP!” 1. Parent: “Who is good?” 2. Child: “God is good!” 3. Parent: “Who is good?” 4. Child: “God is good!”5. Parent: “Who is good?” 6. Child: “God is gooooood!”

PRAY“God, You are so good all the time. We see Your goodness all around us, and even when we can’t see it, we know that You are good. We want to be like You. Help us today to do our best in all that we do because You are good. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.” PRAY

Dear Jesus, thank You for loving each one of us. We can love because You love us. Thank You that You love me, unconditionally. I’m so grateful that You showed Your love for us long before we were even born. Help us today to show love to each other as You show love to us. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.”

COACHES MOMENT“You know that breath you just took was a gift from God? God gives you that breath and this life. After all, He loves you because He’s good. It’s just who He is. Sometimes our circumstances are great. In those times, God is good. Sometimes our circumstances are awful. In those times, God is good. God is good ALL the time! Every breath we breathe is a reminder of this. Let’s say it together, ‘Give thanks to the LORD, FOR HE IS GOOD; His faithful love endures forever.’”

COACHES MOMENT“You see this wall over here to the le ft? (Now switch directions in your stretch and reach to the right.) You see this wall over here to the right? If you were to try and fit the love that I have for you in this room, it would destroy those walls. My love for [each of] you is WAY bigger than this room! God’s love for us is WAY BIGGER than this whole world! There’s nothing you could do to make Him love you anymore, and there’s nothing you could do to make Him love you any less. Jesus loves you because you’re you. Repeat after me: ‘Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; HIS FAITHFUL LOVE ENDURES FOREVER.’”

blindfold bushel basket toss

To See What You Can See

Instructions: Joseph’s coat of many colors was a reminder for him of the goodness of his father. If only he hadn’t bragged about it and took that coat off every once and a while! For this event, you will fill one laundry basket with 12 items of clothing that would fit every member of your family. Set another laundry basket at the opposite end of your playing field. When the clock starts, one athlete must put on every item of clothing from the first basket and then race to the other basket and remove every item (Except original clothing! Please keep on your original clothing!!). Record the fastest team member’s time on the back of the field guide.

Instructions: Once Zacchaeus met Jesus, his life was radically changed. He wanted to give back everything he had stolen and more. Athletes will practice giving back in this relay game. Have one family member collect an item from every room of your house in a laundry basket. Place the laundry basket at a designated spot outside or at your front door if it’s raining. The athlete must return the items to the place they belong, one at a time until the basket is empty. You cannot return more than one item on a trip! Record the fastest team member’s time on the back of the field guide.

Instructions: God used Joseph to make sure that the people of Egypt and even Joseph’s family would have enough food to survive the famine in their land. Every bushel of grain in the warehouse was a testimony to God’s goodness. For this event, you’ll need to gather as many socks as you can find. All team members are blindfolded except one, who has a basket on his/her head. Team members will launch “bushels of wheat” into the warehouse by tossing balled-up socks into the basket. Team members will circle the person with the basket on their head. The goal is to launch as many socks as possible into the basket in one minute. Record the number of socks in your basket on the back of your field guide.

Instructions: Zacchaeus wasn’t going to be able to see Jesus unless he got a little boost. In this event, you will stack family members to see how high you can go. Have someone stand on a teammate’s shoulders or build a family pyramid if you have a large family. Either way, get out that measuring tape, record your height in the field guide, and share pictures of your athletes with #silverdalekids to see how you measure up!

What you will need: 12 items of clothing and 2 Laundry Baskets

What you will need: Laundry basket, 1 item from each room of your house

What you will need: Blindfolds for every team member minus one, basket, lots of balled-up socks

What you will need: Tape measure

COACHES MOMENT“God has done some great things this weekend with our family. We’ve learned how important it is and the benefits of having an attitude of gratitude. We’ve learned that God is good all the time; it’s just who He is. And most importantly, we’ve learned that Jesus loves each of us always! These are not things that we are going to forget in this home. Every day we will be grateful; we will think about God’s goodness, and we are reminded of His love for us.”

You and your family have created lifelong memories that will have an impact on the generations to come.Gather your family around one last time for your final prayer huddle.
