OUr MISSION STATEMENT

Centenary College is a community of learners distinguished by a diverse student body, a dedicated faculty and staff, and stimulating educational opportunities. Centenary College is committed to a quality liberal arts and career studies education with a substantial

international dimension to engage students in learning and prepare them for satisfying careers, successful lives, community service and lifelong intellectual pursuits.

OUr ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHy

Every coach’s mission is to provide the student-athlete with a competitive program and the opportunity to achieve excellence individually or as part of a team. The phrase “the teaching coach,” committed to the students, best describes our philosophy while maintaining a strong

academic profile.

As coaches we serve as both educators and leaders. Centenary’s goal is to maximize the human potential of our student-athletes. Our holistic approach stresses the fundamentals of the games we play as well as the values of responsibility, discipline and commitment. We know that these principles will translate into victories, but more importantly, they will develop young people with character. Those who compete and

graduate become true champions, for they will understand what it means to be committed to excellence.

ABOUT OUr ATHLETIC PrOGrAM

At Centenary College we nurture and encourage true competitive integrity. Our school adheres to a strict code of conduct from the recruiting process all the way to the NCAA Championships. Our coaches, administrators and staff members all take an active role in monitoring and

insuring our compliance with all NCAA, Conference and College regulations.

Centenary sponsors 13 men’s and women’s teams at the Division III level, and our Athletic Department continues to grow. We remain committed to developing our Athletic Department into one of the best small-college programs in the country. With the help of our dedicated

coaches, staff and student-athletes we can see that dream come to reality. As a student-athlete, we will ask you to represent the College’s intercollegiate athletics program both on and off the field with integrity, professionalism and competitiveness. During your years at

Centenary you will be asked to make sacrifices, but these sacrifices will be well rewarded by relationships and memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

SUPPOrT SErVICESFITNESS CENTErThe fitness center, located in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center, gives Centenary students and student-athletes a safe workout environment where they can improve their agility, speed, flexibility, strength and conditioning. Using the fitness center gives each athlete a chance to improve their overall fitness, therefore making them more competitive in their sport of choice. In 2006, the fitness center was expanded to include a separate cardio room as well as the weight machine and free weight areas. The renovation also brought in brand new, state-of-the-art strength and fitness equipment that should fill all our student-athletes’ seasonal fitness needs.

ATHLETIC TrAININGThe Sports Medicine program at Centenary College provides students with an opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics in the safest and healthiest way possible. A well-rounded program for student-athletes directed toward the prevention, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries is enhanced by team physician Dr. Mike Kelly and orthopedic surgeons Dr. Louis Rizio and Dr. Robert A. Defalco. The Athletic Training staff includes Head Athletic

Trainer Karin Damon, Assistant Trainer Dana Baffuto and Associate Athletic Trainer Kevin Davies. Damon received her B.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University and M.S. in Theory of Sports Medicine from Springfield College in Massachusetts. She was the Head Athletic Trainer at New Jersey City University before accepting the position at Centenary College in 2004. Damon was selected as an Athletic Trainer for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, working at the equestrian and mountain biking venues. Baffuto is a graduate of East Stroudsburg University where she received a Masters of Science degree in both Sports Management and Athletic Training. Davies earned a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania.

ACAdEMIC SUPPOrTAcademics are Centenary’s number one priority and therefore we offer a number of support services to our student-athletes to make sure they are on the right path to a successful academic career. Each student-athlete is required to attend study hall in their first year at Centenary to aid them in their transition between high school and the demands of college academics. Professors are also encouraged to send progress reports on student-athletes to the athletic staff for academic monitoring. If a student-athlete is struggling in a class, Centenary offers tutors at no cost for any class. This is just another way that Centenary provides unparalleled service to its students.

COACHING STAFFKIM BrOKING enters her fourth season as head coach of the Centenary College softball program. She has set program records in conference victories during each of her three seasons and has an overall record of 83-40 record, including a 54-12 mark in CSAC action. She has guided her team to three-consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournaments and has led the team to three postseason berths, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011.

Sophomore Cara Montferrat added to her trophy list with 2011 CSAC Player of the Year honors. She also earned First Team All-CSAC Catcher and First Team National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-East-Region Catcher accolades. Montferrat was joined on the CSAC First Team by junior outfielder Caitlin Veverka and senior pitcher Kristin durborow. Veverka also earned First Team NFCA All-East-Region accolades.

Senior Sarah Olsen and freshman Meagan Madsen earned Second Team All-CSAC Utility and Pitcher honors, respectively, and freshman Katie Ciecwisz, junior Jen Vasta and seniors Nicole Fleming and Ali Knapp earned All-CSAC Honorable Mention accolades. Vasta was named Third Team NFCA All-East-Region Outfield.

The Cyclones went 26-12 during the regular season, including a 19-3 mark in CSAC, setting a program-record in conference victories. CC placed second in the CSAC to earn a first-place bye in the conference tournament. The team went 2-0 on the first day of the event and needed just one win to reach the NCAA Tournament.

A loss to Neumann set up a one-game, winner-take-all contest with the Knights for the CSAC Championship. The Cyclones rallied from a six-run deficit and eventually won in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded single by Olsen. Thanks to the first CSAC Championship in program history, Centenary earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. Although Centenary dropped both of its games in the Ithaca Regional of the NCAA Tournament, the team returns most of its team in 2012.

Off the field, CC took home 11 CSAC All-Academic Team honors and Knapp and Vasta each earned CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District 2 Second Team accolades.

In 2010, Centenary went 30-14 and 18-4 in CSAC action, surpassing 2009’s totals of 27 and 17, respectively, while setting a program record in wins. The 2010 squad was eliminated in the CSAC Tournament on the second day of action by Cabrini but earned a berth to the ECAC South Tournament, where the Cyclones lost a heartbreaker to three-time defending champion Misericordia, 1-0.

Montferrat was named CSAC Rookie of the Year, First Team All-CSAC Catcher, National Fastball Coaches Association (NFCA) Third Team All-American and NFCA First Team All-Region. Durborow led the pitching staff with a 20-6 record and 207 strikeouts, both program single-season bests. She earned First Team All-CSAC Pitcher and NFCA Second Team All-Region honors. Veverka also received NFCA Second Team All-Region accolades, as well as All-CSAC Honorable Mention.

Fleming earned First Team Outfield and Olsen was named Second Team Utility. Sophomore danielle dundas, Knapp and freshmen Brianne McManus and Kelly O’dell were all given Honorable Mention accolades.

The team had a banner year in Broking’s first season as head coach, setting then program records for wins (27) and conference wins (17). The Cyclones earned a berth to the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship as the second-seed. After rain cut the tournament short, Centenary was named the second place winner along with Immaculata.

But the Cyclones’ season was not over, as they earned the program’s first-ever berth to the ECAC Tournament. Centenary split on the first day of action, but then won two consecutive games the second day to force a one game, winner-take-all match with Misericordia for the championship. Although the Cougars prevailed in a close contest, 3-1, Broking had put Centenary on the map as a prominent softball program.

Broking returned to Centenary after a very successful six year coaching stint (2002-06, 2008) at Montclair State University. Prior to that, she served as assistant coach at Centenary for one year (2007). While on the staff at MSU, Broking was in charge of all aspects of the team’s pitching staff. She also oversaw the strength and fitness components for the program while coordinating the team’s fundraising events for their annual spring trip. During her tenure the team compiled a record of 207-58.

In 2008 the program won the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament after going undefeated in conference play, finishing with a record of 18-0. MSU then went on to the NCAA tournament as the No. 1 seed. Broking was part of the coaching staff that was named the 2008 Regional Coaching Staff of the Year, one of the top honors awarded to a staff. In addition to her coaching experience at the college level, Broking has handled administrative duties such as coordinating student-athlete study halls, assisting with academic advisement and serving as a mentor to the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).

During her playing career, Broking was a four-year starter and letterwinner for Montclair State from 1998-2001. In her final season, she batted a team-best .437 as the Red Hawks won 36 games and claimed the ECAC South Division III crown. Broking set a school record with 1,048 career putouts as an infielder, and tied the school standard with 145 career RBI. For her career, she batted .404 with 216 hits and 103 runs scored in 174 games, including 56 doubles, while assisting on 96 outs from her first base position. She went 17-2 as a pitcher, with a 2.91 ERA and 83 strikeouts in 173 innings. A two-time All-NJAC First Team All-Star, Broking was also selected as the 2001 MSU Outstanding Female Athlete, the 2001 ECAC South Region MVP and was named the Dioguardi Scholarship Award winner.

Broking holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Physical Education (2002) and a Master of Arts in Physical Education-Exercise Science (2008), both from Montclair State. She also holds a pair of Coaching Certificates, one from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (Certified

Specialist) and the other from the NFCA.

SArAH OLSEN joins head coach Kim Broking’s coaching staff as an assistant coach for the Centenary softball team this year. Olsen, a standout for the Cyclones from 2008-2011 was named to the All-CSAC team in 2009 and second team All-CSAC in 2010 and ’11. Olsen currently stands third in all-time hits for the Cyclones (138), fourth in doubles (22) and second in all-time wins (28), strikeouts(298) and shutouts (11), while posting a career earned run average of 2.92. Olsen has been honored by numerous player

and pitcher of the week awards during her Centenary career.

Prior to Centenary, Olsen was a highly honored player for Pope John XXIII Regional High School, where she played varsity softball all four years, serving as team captain her senior year. Olsen has been named First Team All-West Jersey, First Team All-League, First Team All-Area and Second Team Parochial All-State during her high school career.

Olsen earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Centenary College in 2011 and resides in Lake Hopatcong, N.J.

Page 8: SB MG

The Cyclones established themselves as a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contender in 2009 and 2010. In 2011 Centenary arrived at the top of the CSAC mountain, recording a 13-3 conference record, part of a 29-12 campaign. The Cyclones earned the second seed in the CSAC Tournament and defeated Neumann University 12-11 to win the CSAC, propelling them to an NCAA Tournament berth – a first for Centenary Softball.

With much of the 2011 team returning, Head Coach Kim Broking looks forward to another season competing for the CSAC Title. CSAC Player of the Year and CSAC First Team junior Cara Montferrat and fellow First-Teamer, senior Caitlin Veverka return in 2012 and will once again be expected to lead the Cyclones’ high powered offense. Montferrat and Veverka combined for 23 home runs, 83 runs batted in, and 92 runs scored in 2011. Veverka’s 13 homers and 51 runs scored both led the CSAC, while Montferrat’s 47 RBI and 10 home runs were both good for second in the conference. Montferrat, who caught every inning for the Cyclones, put together one of the best possible offensive seasons. Montferrat, who would go on to be named the CSAC Championship Game MVP also led the conference in batting average (.471), slugging percentage (.840), and on base percentage (.573).

“Cara [Montferrat] and Cait [Veverka] had two of the greatest seasons you can have. I look forward to seeing what they can do with another year under their belts, but I’m even more encouraged to see them take on more in the way of leadership roles,” says Broking.

Returning with Montferrat and Veverka, will be sophomore Katie Ciecwisz and senior Gabrielle Pellegrino to help anchor the infield. Ciecwisz, who also spends time in the circle, batted .306 with 10 doubles and 30 RBI last season, while Pellegrino started 31 games in 2011, registering 15 hits and 12 runs. Juniors Jennifer Ciecwisz and Brianne McManus, both veteran performers, also return to the Centenary infield. Ciecwisz played in 20 games on last year’s championship team, while McManus was an All-CSAC Honorable Mention player in 2010 when she hit .291 with 27 runs before missing the 2011 season due to injury. The Cyclones will also hope to receive a contribution from sophomore Kim Kopesky who also missed 2011 due to injury. Broking figures Kopesky to help stabilize third base, a position vacated by the graduation of Sarah Olsen.

Pitching was a major strength for the 2011 Cyclones and figures to be in 2012. Centenary will look to sophomore Meagan Madsen who was 14-4 in over 109 innings pitched to increase her workload from a year ago after the departure of Kristin durborow. Madsen and Durborow split most of the pitching duties last season with Durborow accounting for a 13-5 record in over 113 innings. Coach Broking will also look to Katie Ciecwisz and junior transfer

roxanne Keelan to pitch in 2012.

The Cyclones, who expect to remain strong offensively, do have some large holes to fill after the graduation of Sarah Olsen (.328 avg., 24 RBI, 30 runs) and Nicole Fleming (.320 avg., 16 RBI, 19 runs), and the departure of Jen Vasta (.425 avg., 29 runs). Broking expects transfers Keelan and sophomore Caitlyn dean to help ease the loss of such key components of last year’s offense.

Coach Broking is confident that Centenary will remain an offensive force. “We lost a nice amount of offensive production from last year, but we also have quite a bit coming back. The returners, along with the newcomers who I know can hit, should keep our offense where it needs to be.”

One component of the Cyclones that will feature a completely new look will be the outfield. Although returning players may see time on the grass, Centenary will primarily use Dean and freshmen Jessica

Curtis, Samantha Belmonte, Erin Walsh, and Morgan Huizenga to roam the outfield replacing the departures of Fleming and Vasta.

Centenary once again, will not necessarily lock everyone into specific positions. Like last season, Coach Broking will use Veverka and Pellegrino as needed around the field. The wealth of versatile players should again prove useful this year.

The Cyclones will once again open the season playing in the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Florida in which Centenary will play ten games between March 11th and 16th. Upon returning home, Broking’s club plays Rowan University before embarking

on the CSAC portion of the schedule.

Centenary will play at Rosemont to open CSAC play on Friday, March 23rd and finish the regular season versus Immaculata on Friday, April 27th. The Cyclones will face Neumann in a rematch of last season’s CSAC Championship Game in Aston, Pa. on Tuesday, April 10th.

2012 appears as if it will be another successful campaign for the Cyclones. With a talented crop of newcomers joining the proven veterans, Centenary looks fit to best defend its CSAC Title.
