Ahlul-Bayt Islamic School
“You are the one who knows without being taught.” (Imam Zainul
Abideen (AS) commended about the intellect and accuracy of Sayyedah
Zainab’s knowledge)
Five years after Hijrah, the Holy Prophet’s (SAW) daughter,
Say-yedah Fatima (A), gave birth to a baby girl. The Ahlul-Bayt and
the Prophet’s companions received the news of the birth with
gladness. The child born was a lady of great eminence, the future
leader of the women and a role model for mankind.
It is also narrated that the Prophet (SAW) foretold the events
of her life and the role she would play in saving Islam. Sayyedah
Fatima (A) and Imam Ali (A) asked the Holy Prophet (SAW) to name
the child to which the Prophet answered:
“I will not precede my Lord in such a matter”
He then declared that the child be named ‘Zainab’, meaning ‘the
embellishment of the father’.
The household of the Holy Prophet was sent by Allah (SWT) as a
pure guide for mankind. Sayyedah Zainab who was one of the pioneers
of the greatest revolutions of Islam perfectly re-flected the
upbringing in this household. Her surroundings emu-lated the light
of knowledge to all parts of the globe.
Sayyedah Zainab’s early education was under the guardian-ship of
the Holy Prophet (SAW). When he passed away, Say-yedah Zainab was
only five years of age. She then turned to the teachings of her
mother and father.
Sayyedah Zainab married her first cousin, Abdullah ibn Ja’far
Tayyar, who was the noblest man of the Hashemites and one of the
most generous men of the Arabs. They had five children, four sons
and one daughter; Awn, Ali al-Zaynabi, Muhammad, Abbas, and
Ummu-Kulthum.
Sayyedah Zainab was highly knowledgeable and was free from
worldly attachment. This world was seen by her as a place of travel
where only that which was necessary for the journey to the
hereafter should be taken. She was known for her generosity and
always preferred others over herself. She lived a humble life,
despite the wealth of her husband.
Sayyedah Zainab was totally devoted to Allah, and it is recorded
that she never missed any of her wajib and nafilah prayers even
during the events of Kerbala.
Sayyedah Zainab was renowned for her leadership through her
conduct. After the martyrdom of her grandmother and

28 Birth of Sayyedah Zainab (AS)
Sayyedah Zainab ~ leader & role model mother, she became the
leader of the women. She used to hold regular classes in Medina for
the women, in which she used to very concisely convey her
knowledge. Her subjects included, Islamic Law and Tafsir of the
Qur’an.
Women used to gather to learn from her teachings and emulate her
manners and morals. She delivered her classes in an eloquent
manner. Her eloquence in speech and presenta-tion was acquired from
her father, Imam Ali (A). Sayyedah Za-inab also became known as
Fasihah (skilfully fluent) and Balighah (intensely eloquent). When
Imam Ali moved to Kufa, Sayyedah Zainab too moved there and
continued holding classes for the women folk there. Once in Kufa,
Sayyedah Za-inab was delivering a lecture in which she was
presenting the exegesis of the phrase
“Allah (SWT) hears and accepts the praise of one who praises
him”
Imam Husayn (A) passed by and upon hearing the voice of his
sister; he stopped to listen to what she was saying. Although he
was an Imam, he honoured his sister by this act, but not only that,
it also goes to show the level of intellect that Sayyedah Zainab
had acquired.
Sayyedah Zainab’s intellect was seen to be extremely vivid and
the capacity to which she absorbed information can only be
described as outstanding. To her merit lies the memorisation of the
Holy Qur’an, the sayings of the Holy Prophet (SAW) pertain-ing to
Islamic ethics, as well as rules of education.
Abdullah ibn Abbas has reported that Sayyedah Zainab narrated
that Imam Ali (A) was once teaching his daughter how to count and
he asked her, “Say: “one” and Sayyedah Zainab replied “One”. He
then asked her “Say: two”.
To this she kept silent and did not reply.
Upon inquiry by her father about her silence, Sayyedah Zainab
said, “A tongue which pronounces ‘one’ cannot say ‘two’”. Her
father hugged and kissed her as a gesture in acknowledg-ment of her
belief in Tawhid of Allah (SWT).
Sayyedah Zainab died in the year 62 AH. Today there are two
shrines, both of which claims Sayyedah Zainab is buried therein,
one in Syria and another in Egypt but the grave in Da-mascus
appears to be more popular.

February 2015 - Term 1 Report Cards We are at the mid-point of
this school year, and Term 1 re-
port cards will be coming home with children in grades 1 to
8
on Friday, February 6 insha’Allah. They contain information
on your child's progress from the beginning of the year to
the
end of January.
Here are some suggestions to help you read, understand and
celebrate your child's report card.
• Read the Learning Skills and Work Habits comments on
page 1 first. These skills hugely affect your child's success
at
school! Acknowledge and celebrate your child's efforts and
improvements, and who they are as a person.
• Talk about the report card together and seek your child's
opinion about his or her accomplishments. Look at the
grades your child is getting in specific areas; this could
sug-
gest some new areas of interest and talents of your child.
Pay
special attention to the number of times your child has been
late or absent, remembering that five days equals a whole
week of school.
• Set goals with your child in areas that you both agree
would benefit from improvement. Look for key phrases like
"organizational skills", "focusing", or "prepared with
materi-
als" to identify specific strengths or weaknesses that might
be affecting academic progress. Make a plan on how to meet
these goals, and share in the responsibility of helping to
sup-
port your child achieve these next steps.
• Contact your child's teacher if you need clarification,
want
more information or need ideas to support your child's
learn-
ing.
Please complete and return the 'cut-off' sec-
tion to the school by Monday, February 9.
Remember that the Term 1 report card is a check-point -
halfway through the year. There are five more months of
work ahead and a lot can change during that time.
Hard work and persistence do pay off!
Parent-Teacher Interviews First term Parent-Teacher Interviews
have been scheduled on
Friday, February 13.
Teachers do not anticipate a need to meet with every child’s
parents and, if an Interview is required, you will receive a
notice of your scheduled time in your child’s Report Card.

Hand washing Hand washing Hand washing Hand washing ---- A
simple thing?A simple thing?A simple thing?A simple thing? Hand
washing seems like such a simple thing yet it is proven to be the
single most effective practice in pre-venting the spread of germs
among children.
The germs acquired through in-adequate hand washing can cause
illness such as colds, flu, pneumo-nia, diarrheas and vomiting.
Germs are easily spread through coughing; sneezing, hand-to-hand
contact and using shared objects.
These germs accumulate on your hands as you perform daily
activi-ties and begin to spread through contact with your eyes,
mouth, nose and to other surfaces.
Teaching children the importance of good hand wash-ing can
reduce or prevent their incidence of illness thereby increasing
their opportunity for learning in a healthier environment.
