INSCRIBED MONUMENTS FROM FRIULI
Epigraphic Summerschool
The Friulian Archaeological Society, the Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage of the
University of Udine, the Institute of Ancient History and Antiquities of the Karl-Franzens
University of Graz and the Department of Culture and Civilisation of the University of Verona are
organising the fifth Epigraphic summerschool, in Aquileia, from the 20th to the 25th of August
2018 for people who are passionate about the ancient world.
Aquileia, 20th - 25th of August 2018
The programme of the course aims to provide a general introduction to Latin epigraphy and consists
of theoretical and practical sections. This year the course will be specifically focused on the topic
"All roads lead to Aquileia: writing and public communication in the Roman world". Practical
activities include visits to Museums, the Lapidarii and the epigraphic collections of Aquileia,
Grado, Udine, Camporosso, Ljubljana, Ajdovščina and Trieste, where epigraphic documents
will be individually examined and discussed. Participants will have the possibility to personally
conduct an analysis of some of the monuments, thus acquiring familiarity with the epigraphic
evidence, which constitutes a precious source for the reconstruction of many aspects of the Roman
society.
The implementation of the programne will be held by a group of lecturers from the aforementioned
institutions, who are experts in this discipline.
The course is open to all who share an interest and passion for the antiquity, there are therefore no
age limits for those wishing to attend the course, nor are specific qualifications required. However,
because of the specific topic, it is assumed that each participant possesses a basic knowledge of
Latin. Lessons and activities will be held in German, English and Italian, and, if required, a
translation will be provided.
