SJW FALL FESTIVAL RAFFLE WINNERS

AND WRAP UP MEETING

The winners of the Big Ticket Raffle items were as follows; $700 - Rick Hansen, $500 - Charlie Schmidt, $300 - Dennis Clyne, $200 - Dan Caven, $100 - David & Jeanne Hassing, Diamond Cross Necklace - Charlene Ubl, Car Detail Package - Dianne Honermann, Twin Quilt - Ryan Hassing.

The festival raised over $15,600 to put towards general operating expenses for St. Joe’s! Thank you to everyone who made this possible!

The festival planning committee wrap up potluck meeting will be on Wednesday, October 16th at 6:30pm in the auditorium. Please bring a dish to pass. Thank you to the committee for all the hard work and hope to see you at our final meeting to celebrate our success!

Last Tuesday the Joint Pastoral Council met and one of the topics was an update on our sister parish, St. Lucie on the island of La Gonave in Haiti. The communication has been more intermittent during the past few months, perhaps because of the political and economic unrest they are experiencing. One example: the inflation rate on the mainland is 20% and, on the island, 24%! At the end of September, Father Harold, the pastor, wrote: “In Haiti presently many troubles. No gas, starving, no jobs, prices are still going up and up. No confidence in the president. Poverty is all over.” A week ago, he commented: “Life on La Gonave island is most of the time like a hell. But God is good.” Perhaps a quick review of what has been happening might help you understand their plight.

Father Harold is very concerned about providing an education for the young people in the parish; he maintains that without it, they have no future. We have been working with him to build a school for about two years and in May 2018, the first phase began with $21,000. The second phase began after our Lenten gift this year, $13,402, and was completed in July; see photo #2 below. Now they are waiting to complete the last step, the roof, which is estimated at $14,845. One hour after the children in kindergarten were dismissed at the end of June, the old chapel/church, which was being used as their classroom, collapsed (see photo #1 below). Luckily, or providentially, no one was hurt, but it has meant that they are really pressed for space in the temporary school (the current church, which is not much of a structure). Here’s how Father Harold describes the current school year: “The little kids are attending class under the trees. For the elementary school two classes are also under the trees. The four other classes are packed like sardines in the church. All the time the same problems, when it is raining no class, when it is too windy no class and also inside the ‘church building’ we have a cacophony from the voices of teachers and students. This situation hurts me a lot.” Wouldn’t it be great to get the roof on the school?

We do send a monthly gift (“tithe” of 1% of our income, plus any special gifts from parishioners or the Men’s Club) that averages about $720 ($351 “tithe” + $372 gifts). These monies are used to pay the teachers, help feed the students/staff and meet parishioners’ emergency needs. In his September message, Father Harold wrote: “My parish and I will never stop thanking you and your parishioners … Your donation every month is a great miracle for my students, teachers, students’ parents and parishioners. Every day we can see the progress.” I add my appreciation to his and ask you to keep our sister parish in your prayers, assisting them as we are able.

Sincerely in Christ,

What is Children’s Liturgy of the Word? The word of God has a message that is as important

and fitting for children as it is for adults; however,

children often fail to hear the message simply

because the adult vocabulary is beyond their under-

standing.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a celebration of Sunday Mass in

which the Liturgy of the Word portion of the Mass is presented by

parents, adults and youth in a different environment and on a level that

children can better understand and enjoy. It is a wonderful way to assist

our children in learning from the Sunday Liturgy.

They return to their families after the General Intercessions to celebrate

the Liturgy of the Eucharist with the entire community. Who is Children’s Liturgy for?

Children's Liturgy of the Word is for all Children ages 4 years to 1st

grade. Ideally those old enough not to need one on one adult

supervision.

When is Children’s Liturgy?

8:30 am Mass at Holy Family in Lake Crystal

10:30 am Mass at St. Joseph the Worker

There is no Children’s Liturgy on the 1st Sunday of the month since

that is the Youth Mass.

How do we register for Children's Liturgy?

There is no registration form for Children’s Liturgy. At SJW on

Sundays when your child will attend Children’s Liturgy, please sign

them in the book located in the front entrance and put a name tag on

them also.

Come Take Part … In teaching we often learn more. The Children’s Liturgy of the Word is operated as a PARENT CO-OP

and 2 parents (grandparents, high school students, friends) are needed

to make this ministry possible each Sunday. If we get enough

volunteers the commitment should be only once every other month.

Training is provided. Hey, you’re at Mass anyway, so come join us!

Contact Connie at [email protected] to

volunteer or for more information!

SJW MEN’S CLUB MISSION STATEMENT:

To bring together men of all ages to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ. With the direction of our Priest, encouraging each

other to be servant leaders in our Church.

IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO PICK UP A BABY BOTTLE from one of the church

entrances, and take it home to fill with your spare change during the month of October. The Mother and Child Assistance Fund helps many women, like Dominique. When her youngest daughter was born, she took an unpaid maternity leave and relied on savings to get through. She started to miss work days when her daughter got sick and couldn't attend daycare, and Dominique fell behind on bills. Facing a shutoff notice for her electricity and possible eviction from her apartment, she called Catholic Charities and received the financial assistance she needed, as well as being connected to other community resources. Thank you for your generous support!

40 DAYS FOR LIFE MIDWAY RALLY - All are invited to Mankato’s 40 Days

for Life Midway Rally on Sunday, October 13th at 12 pm in the public right of way outside of Mankato’s Planned Parenthood. We will hear the conversion story of a former abortion provider: Dr. Haywood Robinson. Dr. Robinson will share the story of how Jesus worked in his life to bring him from supporting a culture of death to being a leader in the culture of life for the National 40 Days for Life team as their director of Medical Affairs and Education. Please don’t stop praying! God is hearing your prayers! Sign up at 40daysforlife.com Contact Beverly Miller at 507.514.2425 with questions.

St Joseph the Worker: Tuesday Evenings 6:30-8pm – Gym. Dates: Nov. 12, 19 & 26, Dec. 10 & 17, Feb. 25, Mar. 10, 17, 24 & 31. In Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come, presenter Jeff Cavins pulls back the veil on the rich symbolism present in Revelation. Discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean and see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the “end times.” Explore the Church’s teaching on the second coming of Christ and the Last Judgment. Understand how God, the Divine Bridegroom, and the Church, his spotless bride, enter into a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage every time we celebrate Mass.
