MONITOR

From the Principal…

Dear Mathewson Families,

June is an exciting month here at Mathewson. We are winding down

our PAWsitive year with lots of fun Celebrations of Learning.

Students have done a nice job pushing their academic talents as our

year comes to an end. We hope to keep our momentum going right til

the end. Please know that when report cards come home (for our

Kindergartners and First Graders) we will be sending home

information to help you in selecting “just right” leveled reading

books for children to read over the summer. We hope this helps with

summer book choice.

In May we wrapped up our Top Dog ceremonies with a huge

celebration. We thank Dr. Feser, Superintendent of Schools, for

joining us for the assembly. At the assembly we thanked all of

our top dogs for respectful behavior and a job well done. The June

Top Dog Book of the month is up to teachers to select from our

previous selections. With so many good ones this year I leave it up

to them to each choose.

We thank you for all your support with our Top Dog program and

daily support.

It truly takes a village to help our children grow and I have enjoyed

being part of the Mathewson family.

As I close out my first year as principal, “Thank you” and enjoy your

summer!

President’s

Message Hi Everyone,

It is hard to believe that

this school year is ending in just one short week. I

don't know where the time has gone!

We have wrapped up some great events and continue

to gear up for Field Day next week. I would like to

thank Sandra Rodriguez and Malinda Childs and all

their volunteers for their tireless efforts with our

BOGO book fair!

Thank you to Emmeline Harrigan and Christine

Shuler for the fabulous Plant Sale in May! We were

so blessed with such a gorgeous day!

I know the teachers and staff were so grateful for

all the wonderful things that Maria Bravo did during

Teacher Appreciation. Maria has done such a great

job with the Sunshine Committee at Mathewson. We

are sad to see her move on and thank her for her

efforts all year on this !

As I said, Field Day is next week and I want to thank

Lise Robinson, Emmeline Harrigan and Sandra

Rodriguez for chairing this event and to all the

volunteers who have offered to help that day! It's

sure to be a fun day for all our kids!

Lastly, I want to say a big thank you to the entire

Executive Board of the PTA who worked all year,

came to the PTA meetings and stepped up whenever

I needed the help - thank you to Vice President -

Nicole Servas, Treasuer - Cheryl Nethercott,

Corresponding Secretary - Emmeline Harrigan and

Recording Secretary - Jen Jui. You all made it very

easy to do my job and I think it was a great year for

all our staff and students thanks to all your efforts

and those of all our volunteers all year long!

We are also still working on our plans for next year

and are in need of a few chair people for a few of

our most popular events and some new ones too!

The PTA events do not happen without the tireless

efforts of so many wonderful parents, grandparents

and teachers, so please plan to get involved next

year or stay involved! We need you and NOW is the

time to be a part of your child's schooling. I can tell

you as the mother of three, the older the get, the

less chance there is to get involved and be a part of

their school, so do it NOW while they are still young!

Again, I truly want to thank everyone for all their

efforts this past year. Being the PTA President is

easy when you have strong people behind you and I

was so lucky to have so many great volunteers who

put all of this out. So, from the bottom of my heart,

THANK YOU!!!!

Have a wonderful summer! For those moving on from

Mathewson, you will be missed and good luck!!! For

the rest of you - see you in August!!!

Sincerely,

Sherri Franzman ______________________________________

Room 22 & 23 Go FLAT for STANLEY!! Mrs. Bugge' & Mrs. Tuozolla's 2nd grade classes

read Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown. Then at home

they created their own FLAT SELF and mailed them

to a 'host' family. The 'Flat Self' will visit

with their choosen special family for a short

time before returning back to Mathewson.

Flat Students were sent all over: Milford, different

parts of Connecticut, all over the United States and

we even had some world travelers!!! *Several grade 2 classes participated in this part of the project.

After listening to their teacher read Flat Stanley,

Room 22 & Room 23 then had to read another Flat Stanley book from the series and complete a Cereal

Box Book Report ~~ creating a new book cover,

writing a summary, identifying the setting and telling

what the main characters character traits were.

The children did a great job completing

and presenting their projects. They are excited

waiting for the arrival of their Flat Selves.

BE SUNWISE

The sun is a beautiful thing

especially after the long snowy

winter we had this year.

However, too much sun can be

dangerous. Overexposure to the

sun and its ultraviolet (UV)

radiation can cause painful sunburn.

It can also cause more serious health problems such

as skin cancer, premature aging of the skin,

cataracts and other eye damage. It is important

that all children protect their skin from sun

exposure.

By following some simple steps you can enjoy your

time in the sun while protecting your skin from over

exposure:

Limit Time in the Midday Sun

Seek Shade- Stay under cover to protect yourself

from the sun. Remember the shadow rule: “Watch

your shadow-No Shadow, Seek Shade!”

Always Use Sunscreen- Apply a sunscreen with a

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30 liberally

on all exposed skin. Reapply lotion every 2-3 hours

when working or playing outdoors

Swimmers Ear is a common ear infection that occurs

frequently in the summer. It is caused by water

getting trapped in the ear canal, which then allows

bacteria to grow and multiply. The infection can

spread and may become extremely painful to touch.

Water usually runs in and out of the ear without any

difficulty. However, sometimes the water may cause

some of the protective wax to wash away. The water

then remains in the ear canal providing a breeding

ground for the bacteria. Knowing the signs and

symptoms can help you decide when it is time to call

your health care provider.

Wear A Hat & Cover Up- - A hat with a wide brim

offers good protection for your eyes, ears, face and

neck. Wear loose-fitting clothing to prevent

overheating.

Page 6: Save the...celebration. We thank Dr. Feser, Superintendent of Schools, for joining us for the assembly. At the assembly we thanked all of our top dogs for respectful behavior and a

6

Wear Sunglasses- You should wear sunglasses that

provide 99%-100% UVA and UVB protection to

prevent eye damage.

Watch the UV Index- The UV Index provides

important information to help you plan your outdoor

activities to prevent overexposure to the sun.

Drink Water – Drink plenty of water to keep

hydrated. Soda, juice and Gatorade have many other

ingredients that can be dehydrating. Free water is

best.

Wishing you A Healthy and Safe Summer! Mrs. Weissauer _________________________________________________

BOOK FAIR THANKS! On behalf of myself and Malinda, we wanted to say

thank you to all who came out and volunteered at the

BOGO book fair! Total sales were $5,630 and the

PTA will get 10% of those sales in Scholastic

Dollars…not too bad for 2 ½ days! I wanted to give

an extra thanks to Malinda Childs who was able to be

at the book fair all day for the three days!

Also, Scholastic gave us 10

posters to raffle off for

the “All for Books”

program. Any student

that brought in $1 was

able to enter their name in a

raffle to win a poster. With the

money collected, we were able to purchase over

$100 in books that will be donated to the

Mathewson Library in Halle Root’s name.

Thanks again and I hope that I will see you at the

Mathewson October 2013 Book Fair!

GRADE 1 SAFETY DAY Officer Garon DelMonte and Officer Pat Taylor

accompanied by his K-9 Noble came to visit on June

7th. Officer DelMonte talked to the children about

knowing who is a trusted adult, identifying a police

officer, bike safety and the importance of wearing a

helmet, and calling 9-1-1. Officer Taylor and Noble

talked to us about why a police officer would have a

K-9 and showed us some really cool "tricks" that

Noble can do. It was a fun morning!

Canevari Crew News What an exciting end of the year it has been for the

Canevari Crew! If you remember last month, we

were hatching chicks and are happy to report that

we hatched 7! They are returned to their farm at

Rivercrest.

I personally just wanted to say how incredibly proud

I am of the first graders in Room 30. They have

worked so hard and have come so far over the last

year. They just finished their end of year

performance of "Mushroom in the Rain" and did a

fantastic job! I will miss you terribly, but wish you

all the best in second grade, where you will continue

to shine! Love, Mrs. Canevari
