Pain and EmergenciesSeen Immediately
Before the clock strikes midnight on Friday, Dec. 31, people around the world will resolve to make changes in their lives for the upcoming year.
Setting goals like these is nothing new. It’s a time-honored tradition to make a fresh start on the morn-
ing of Jan. 1. And while the exact origins of the New Year’s resolution
are unknown, there is evidence that an-cient Babylonians recorded resolutions as far back as four millennia.
Certain resolutions crop up again and again, and are among the most popular pledges made on the eve of the New Year. These include fitness goals, weight loss, getting out of debt, help-ing others, getting organized, quitting
smoking, and spending more time with
family. With the environment on many people’s minds, green resolutions are al-so becoming more common—and you’ll find suggestions scattered throughout this booklet. These can include making modifications to a home or business to use less energy, or simply adapting one’s behavior in minor ways to have less of an impact on the planet.
We’ve filled this booklet with ways you can improve not only the quality of your own life, but also the lives of oth-ers. We hope you enjoy the tips we’ve compiled for you on how to start your New Year healthier, happier, and with a little more change in your pockets. Happy New Year!
Donation of Time or MoneyThe good thing about helping others is that we usually end
up helping ourselves in the process. So the resolution to give back to an individual or the community often proves mutu-ally beneficial. Continue feelings of generosity that spring up during the holiday season throughout the rest of the year. Volunteer at a senior center, or become a mentor for disad-vantaged children. Find a charity to which you can really re-late and regularly donate money to its cause.
Repair Broken RelationshipsWe have all said and done things we regret later. Sometimes
these involve bridging gaps between the people we love. This year, resolve to fix relationships that need a little work, or reconnect with a long-lost friend or relative.
Spread Some JoyWhy not do something just for the sake of bringing a smile
to someone’s face? Mail a greeting card to one of your neighbors who may seem lonely. Find out if there is an elderly resident who could use some help grocery shop-ping, or just needs someone to sit with him or her for a few hours during the week. Think like a child and absorb all of the little joys you experience every day and often do not give any thought. Send a note to your child’s teacher saying how much you appreciate his or her dedication. Ask to see a supervisor at a store and compliment the job done by an employee, rather than complaining about something that’s wrong.
These little measures can bring smiles to many people and don’t require much effort at all.
And the Merry Year Is Born!

With the end of each calendar year comes the time to make changes for the coming 12 months. How many of these resolutions are ones we’ve all heard before? Quit smoking, lose weight, eat healthier—these are the common goals that surface again and again. Perhaps this year we should resolve to come up with
more unique resolutions that put the emphasis on helping others in addition to helping ourselves.

• And Much More
Jan. 1 is the first day of the calendar year in both the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Across the globe, New Year’s Day has be-
come a day of celebration, particularly when the clock strikes midnight and the New Year is officially welcomed.
In New York City, the famous ball drops in Times Square at the stroke of midnight, while other celebrations across the globe also ring in the New Year in a festive way.
But Jan. 1 has been host to numerous no-table events throughout world history as well. In 1651, Charles II was crowned the King of Scotland. More than two centuries later, the
president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, is-sued the second order of the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.
Exactly 17 years later, con-struction began on the Panama Canal, while on the first day of 1899, individuals witnessed the of-ficial end of Spanish rule in Cuba. In 1999, 100 years after the construction of the Panama Canal began, the euro was introduced to world financial mar-kets as an accounting currency.

The holiday season is a time of year with many traditions, from family outings to the local Christmas tree farm to get-togethers
over holiday meals to gift exchanges with cowork-ers. However, not all traditions are as popular as gift giving or vacations.
One such tradition that many would like to avoid is packing on a few extra pounds. While that’s cer-tainly the healthiest decision to make, it’s also the most difficult. For those who find themselves look-ing to shed a few extra pounds each January, the following plan should help accomplish that first goal of the New Year:
Practice portion control. Often, many people don’t have a problem with what they’re eating, but how much they’re eating. Resolving to avoid certain items is likely going to increase desire for those items, which is a recipe for overindulgence should you eventually cave in. When it comes to holiday foods, manage your portions and eat every meal in moderation.
Don’t save up your calories. Though it might seem like it doesn’t matter when you get your 2,000 calories a day, it actually does. For example, you can’t forgo breakfast and lunch with the idea of cashing in on your daily calorie intake at dinner. You will end up overeating under such a circum-stance, and it’s unhealthy to skip meals.
Consider that you might just be thirsty. The symptoms of dehydration can be quite similar to those of hunger, as the stomach will make noise
when you’re dehydrated just as when you’re hun-gry. If you find your stomach growling shortly after eating a meal, there’s a strong chance you need a glass or two of wa-ter. Dehydration can also make you feel fatigued, so keep up your energy by staying hydrat-ed throughout the day.
Drink water while cooking. This will help you avoid over-eating when the dinner you’ve been cooking is finally served. Cooks also commonly eat while they’re cooking, but having a glass or two of water could be a good replacement for such unnecessary snacking.
Don’t overeat because everyone else is. Nearly every adult recalls doing something fool-ish as a child just because friends were doing it as well. And Mom or Dad likely said something like, “If Timmy jumped off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you do that, too?” The same principles can be ap-plied to weight loss as well. Just because others are still indulging after the holiday season, be it with leftovers or just everyday meals, doesn’t mean you can also afford to do so. It can be hard to stop overeating after spending the holiday season doing just that, but in the long run it will pay off, and you’ll be better off for having done so.

It’s one thing to make New Year’s resolu-tions, but it’s an entirely different thing to follow through with them. Breaking resolutions is almost as much a time-
honored tradition as dreaming up what you hope to accomplish in the new year.
However, there are ways to hedge the odds in favor of keeping resolutions. Just follow these pointers:
• Set realistic goals: Realistic goals with firm deadlines are much easier to achieve than open-ended goals that are too lofty. If you want to lose weight, for example, aim for weekly goals that are manageable, such as a pound or two a week, instead of saying you want to lose 30 pounds in total. This way you can see success at regular inter-vals and keep up with the goal.

• Make a plan: Once you come up with resolution goals, figure out the way to achieve them. If you resolve to quit smoking, maybe the plan in-volves visiting the doctor for a nicotine-replacement prescription, or find-ing a friend who will quit with you and provide moral support. Having a clear plan will enable you to work more readily toward the goal.
• Post your goal: Visualizing your goal and end results could be the motiva-tion you need. Cut out pictures that represent your resolution and post them on the refrigerator or on the bathroom mirror. This way you are forced to see the goal every single day. If it’s fresh in your mind, you may be more likely to follow through.
• Find a support team: A friend, relative, or simply someone there to offer motivation can be your ticket to resolution success. It’s much easier to accomplish what is presumed to be the impossible when you have some-one rooting for you.
• Come up with a reward: With an eye on a prize other than the end result of your resolution, you may work harder. For example, if your resolu-tion is to save X amount of money, make the prize a trip or special pur-chase that was made possible by those hard-earned savings.

Realize greater financial rewards by saving on big-ticket items rather than just pinching pennies.
Easy Ways to Realize greater financial rewardssaving on big-ticket items rather just pinching pennies.Save Big Bucks
• Buy a used car. With the high number of lease turn-ins and the warrantees many dealerships are offering on pre-viously owned vehicles, buying used could be your most cost-effective option. Consider this: The moment you drive a new car off of the lot that car’s value starts to depreciate greatly. There’s little point in paying more for a car simply to have the latest model, say financial ex-perts. A used car in good condition will work just as well and cost far less than an off-the-showroom floor vehicle.
• Keep good credit. There’s no point saving a few dollars here and there if you pay bills late and let your credit score slide. A poor credit score will garner you a higher interest rate on any loan. This can mean thousands and thousands of dollars overspent.
Most people are interested in saving money these days. However, while skipping your coffee and bagel combo every morning or bringing a bagged lunch
to work will certainly save a few dollars here and there, such adjustments likely won’t add up to huge savings. But here are a few ways to reap big savings.
• Strike a deal with the doctor. The healthcare industry is con-stantly in flux. Many doctors are facing high malpractice pre-miums or are receiving low reimbursement rates from health insurance companies. That leaves room for negotiation on services. It’s not that uncommon, either. If you are willing to pay cash for your health services, you may be able to negotiate lower rates on routine medical visits—it doesn’t hurt to ask.
• A poor economy has taken its toll on the real estate market. This is the perfect time to save some money if you’re in the market for a home. See if your real estate agent is willing to reduce his or her commission rate, especially if you do more of the leg work. Find out if you can save a percent or two on the agent’s rate. That can add up to thousands in savings.
• Buy in bulk. Family-sized or bulk items tend to be less ex-pensive per unit sold. Take advantage of this fact by purchas-ing frequently used items when they are on sale and freeze or store them for future use. Buying bulk doesn’t mean you have to enroll in a warehouse store membership. Local supermar-kets run sales that rival regular prices at warehouse stores. Just do your research and comparison shop.

Protecting What’s Important to You With the Expertise and Service You Deserve
Money
By Sue Cornell
Is your identity safe?
According to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) estimates, every year, as many as nine million Americans are the victims of
identity theft—that’s when personally identifying information, including name, credit cards, or so-cial security numbers, are used without permission to commit fraud and other crimes. If you’re not careful, thieves can establish a line of credit in your name and you may know nothing of the crime until a debt collector contacts you.
Ten Tips to Avoid Identity Theft
But protecting yourself is easy. Business education teacher Diane Stanley has these 10 steps to keep your identity secure in the new year:
• The FTC estimates that one in four victims of identity theft knows the thief. Keep yourself safe, even at home, by making sure you don’t leave your wallet or credit cards lying around.
• The mail is full of pre-approved credit card applications, particularly at this time of year. Shred any applications you don’t want and cut up cards you no longer plan to use. Sign new cards right away.
• Many credit card receipts contain blank spaces for tips. Draw a line through any spaces above the total that you do not fill in. Save receipts to check them against your statements.
• Scammers often make cold calls, pretending to represent a company you know. Never provide a credit card or social security number via email or over the phone unless you initiated the call.
• When you create personal identification numbers (PINs), do not use numbers that are easy to guess, such as your birth date. Never write a PIN on your card or carry a PIN with you.
• Review statements monthly and report any unauthorized usage.
• Clean out your financial files periodically, and shred any documents that contain your social security or credit card number.
• Install firewalls, anti-spyware, and anti-virus software on your PC and keep them updated.
• Beware of phishing scams. If you’re contacted regarding any type of issue with an account, call the company back at the customer service number on your statement.
• During the holidays, many of us shop online to avoid the hustle and bustle of the mall. Before entering your credit card number online, be certain a website is secure by checking that the browser bar has an icon of either a padlock or an unbroken key, and a URL that begins with “https.”

The new year has arrived and once again thousands of people are adding “get organized” to
their list of New Year’s resolutions. For many, come February or March such resolutions are long since for-gotten, and the messes that sparked the resolution in the first place re-main largely untouched. If you’re step-ping over piles of junk on the floor, or being pummeled by haphazardly stacked belongings when you open closet doors, you just may be suffering from a clutter problem. Don’t worry, you’re certainly not alone.
According to organizational expert Peter Walsh, millions of Americans are drowning in clutter. Blame it on our super-sized mentality that “more is more.” We’re buying bigger homes and stuffing them to the gills with
even more stuff. We’re measuring status by how much we own and getting overwhelmed with clutter in the process.
The trouble with clutter is that it sneaks up on a person. It slowly grows and, when it’s gotten out of control, the task of sorting through it seems so overwhelming. But con-quering the clutter is the key to taking back control of your life. Here are some steps for doing just that.
1. Material things don’t make the man or woman: First, transform your way of thinking about stuff. Packing your home full of things will not make you better off than anyone else. In fact, it could do just the opposite if it affects your physical or mental health. When shopping, think about why you’re buying something. Is it for need or is it just because you’re bored or shopping for pleasure?
Seven Ways to Conquer Clutter
New Year, New You 2010 • 17
Thinking about resolving to live a greener lifestyle? In addition to using energy-efficient appliances, carrying reus-able totes, or recycling, consider reducing your dependency on one of the most precious resources —water.
Try adopting new bathroom habits and updating your fix-tures with products that will help you conserve water with-out sacrificing your experience. Saving water may turn out to be easier than it sounds, especially with a few simple tips.
A recent eNation survey showed 83.7 percent of people take showers for the primary purpose of relaxing. Thirty-four percent of respondents said the “shower is my time for just focusing on me.” It represents a way to not only get clean, but to also escape from the stress of the day.
However, those showers add up to more than 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year nationwide, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It’s not likely you will want give up regular showers, but manufacturers are work-ing to create products that will continue to provide a satisfy-ing shower experience while simultaneously saving water.
Here are three easy tips to help you save water:Learn to multitask: Next time you find yourself stand-
ing idle under the stream, reach for your toothbrush and freshen up your pearly whites. Men, hang a mirror in the shower and shave your face. Or, hang your shirt or work outfit in the bathroom and let the shower’s steam release the wrinkles. That won’t help you cut back on water usage, but it’ll save time and the energy used to power your iron.
Install a WaterSense showerhead: If your showerhead is more than a year or two old, it’s probably not the most ef-ficient model. The EPA created the WaterSense Program to help homeowners conserve water. In 2010, it introduced specifications that require a showerhead to flow at 2 gal-lons per minute or less in order to qualify as a WaterSense product.
Be resourceful: You want a hot shower, but sometimes you end up running the water for a few minutes to wait for the cold water to pass. To avoid letting that water go to waste, put a bucket or watering can under the showerhead to catch the cold water. It can be reused at a later time for watering plants around the house.

Sacrifi cing Your Showers
2. Observe the “in and out” rule: When you buy, for example, new clothes, toss out an item you already have for each new piece of clothing you purchase. If the old clothes are in good condition, donate them to a local charity.
3. Remove items from the scene to sort: You’re more likely to do a half-effort job of sorting unless you take out all of the items from a cluttered room and sort them elsewhere. Spread out a tarp or tablecloth and sort through bedroom or kitchen clutter. Determine a set limit on what can be kept (one or two plastic bins full) and separate stuff based on what should be kept, sold, donated, or trashed. Be reasonable: If you haven’t used something in six months to a year, chances are you can do without it. Remember, marketplace websites like eBay are good places to sell things you don’t use anymore.
4. Tackle one room at a time: Viewing the organizational proj-ect in its entirety could overwhelm even the most steadfast organizational guru. Break up the project into manageable chunks. Do a room a weekend.
5. Keep a bin for miscellanea: There are bound to be items that belong in one room that have gravitated to another room. When organizing, toss those stray items into a bin that will be brought to the right room at a later time. Avoid stopping and starting your project by going room to room and you’ll be more likely to stick with the task.
6. Kids and clutter: Many families can attest that kids’ belong-ings contribute to a good portion of the household clutter. That’s because well-meaning parents and other family mem-bers tend to over-indulge children with every toy imaginable. Soon, you’re left with a house bursting at the seams with toys and other kids’ stuff. Many of these toys are expensive and you don’t want to part with them. So what’s the solution? Rather than trash toys in frustration, keep a fraction of the stuff in a playroom or bedroom in an organized manner (bookshelves, bins, cubbies, etc.). Store the other toys in an attic or basement in bins. At regular intervals, rotate the toys that are in the playroom. The kids will become excited about seeing “old” stuff again, and you’ll be left with less clutter.
7. Categorize: Closets are one of the places that present a num-ber of clutter problems. Out of sight, out of mind is a common mindset. Think about categorizing closets, such as hanging all skirts together, slacks, sweaters, etc. If you haven’t worn it for 12 months or it’s out of style, get rid of it.

Spend Family Time This Winter
& Make it FUNDon’t forget to play
The colder weather offers a good ex-cuse for indoor playtime. The following are some quick ways to make it educa-tional and fun: • Play peek-a-boo with infants to help
babies recognize your voice. • Blow bubbles with your child and
watch them chase and catch the bubbles to reinforce motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
• Play everyday-math games with your preschooler. Ask “how many steps to the garage?” or “how many dollars to buy that toy?”
• Play board games as a family. Rolling dice, counting spaces, and problem solving are all good examples.
• Use stuffed animals and cardboard boxes to help your child create a zoo, farm, or wildlife reserve. Dramatic play builds vocabulary, social skills, and cre-ative thinking.
Winter readingNothing is better than snuggling up
to a book with your child. The winter months are a perfect time to begin a read-ing routine that can jump-start a lifelong love of reading. Some tips include: • Help cultivate baby’s interest in books
by choosing ones that capture his or her attention such as board books and pop-up books. Your child will want to see these again and again.
• While reading together, ask questions about the pictures. Children are de-lighted in finding objects on the page. If the child says “ball,” follow up with, “That’s a blue ball.” You’ll be giving your child additional language for his or her verbal bank.
• Ask your child open-ended questions about the story you are reading, such as “Why do you think that happened?”
T he holidays bring shorter days and colder weather, as well as the months when kids spend more time indoors.
While the rush of shopping, cooking, and entertaining visitors can seem never-ending, the winter months can be a rewarding op-portunity to spend more time with family.
Since many families “cocoon” during cold weather, parents may be in search of fun activities they can engage in with the little ones during the winter months and beyond. Here are a few ideas:
Turn an outdoor game into indoor fun this winter!
