The Background of the Schools
SK and SMK Lembah Subang are designated “Trust Schools” under Yayasan Amir’s Trust School Programme.
“Trust” schools are under-performing and/or draw students from less fortunate communities.
The schools’ catchment area is a poor community in Lembang Subang, PJ, just behind Citta Mall.
40% of the children come from families with an average income of less than RM 2000 per month.
Family income below RM 4000 per month is considered low in come in KL and PJ.
The schools have expressed concern about,
1) quality of the food at school canteen
2) the ability of the children to afford meals, and
3) that many children don’t eat breakfast.
Survey showed that most children have less than RM3 to spend at school per day.
There are approximately 920 pupils from 500 families in the SK (primary school).
Puan Noor Ismahwati Ismail who is one of the school faculty administrators, currently runs a breakfast club for
less advantaged students.
“I try to get donation of biscuits, crackers, buns or simple food for the pupils to eat before the school started.
Everyday, there is/are pupils can not afford to bring money or just simply been denied by their parents.”

…continued
The canteen Operator is the sole vendor, selling traditional items such as Nasi Lemak, noodle soup, keropok,
nuggets and other items.
The prices range from RM1 – 1.50 for most meal items.
Nuggets are 40 cents.
The canteen operator sometimes serves breakfast – she makes an occasional batch of noodles, but this is
irregular.
She employs 7 staff and runs a catering business on weekends.
She knows what she sells is not healthy but does not seem interested to include MakanLah! items for sale as it
will eat into her profit margin.
Outside the school there are several illegal sellers who set up to capture the market of kids as they leave school
at noon.
They sell fried chicken, coloured sweet drinks, keropok, and various other unhealthy and questionably hygienic
items. They do not sell in the mornings.
12
The Birth of SHR Breakfast Club
SHR together with MakanLah! agreed to provide needy children within these schools with a healthy breakfast.
RM2000 per month will be funded to support this CSR project.
The healthy food will be created by SHR and delivered directly to the school in the morning during recess
hour. (on a monthly basis between the primary and secondary schools)
Menu items are determined through the MakahLah! food tasting survey results, as there were children
participated from SK and SMK Lembah Subang.
Anticipated Results
• Needy students consume healthy food
• Students eat breakfast
• Student appreciate the value of good nutrition
• Schools incorporates a successful nutrition based reform into its agenda
• SHR responds to the needs of its immediate community
• SHR’s brand value augmented through positive corporate engagement
Cost Considerations
• SHR provides the food (RM2 per pupil per month) 920 pupils in Primary school and 600 pupils in Secondary
school's data.
• SK/SMK teachers commit time to organize the students
• SHR makes a small grant to MakanLah! to manage and facilitate the engagement strategy for 12 months.

Selangor Philharmonic Orchestra
32
The Selangor Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO) is a non-profit
organization with a vision of promoting and spreading the
beauty of classical music in Selangor, educating and
training young musicians to appreciate large scale
performance and organization, and discovering new
talent from local communities and providing them an
opportunity to perform in concert.
As a non-profit organization, the SPO has limited resources
to pursue its objectives.
Along the way, the SPO has grown and now unites
together some 200 talented musicians under one baton!
They have also given birth to two satellite musical groups:
the Selangor Philharmonic Youth Orchestra as well as the
Selangor Philharmonic Wind Orchestra.
The SPO has grown its fan base, with a lively presence
online and on social media.
A token has been given to support and
provide a platform for SPO local classical
musicians to perform and share wonderful
music for the benefit of the community.
