OF KINGS AND KINGSHIP
Americans have an uncomfortable relationship with kings. The American Revolution was fought for independence from King George, after all. Nonetheless, today every Catholic church around the world celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. Today's feast invites us to look beyond our national loyalties and rejoice in our primary identity. We are children of God in Jesus, Christ the King. Our readings help us consider what it's like to belong to God s kingdom. The book of Samuel captures the deep longing of the Israelites for a king to shepherd them. Saint Paul reminds the Colossians that we belong to the kingdom of Christ, whose power he praises in a beautiful hymn. Finally, Luke's Gospel calls to mind the kind of king Jesus chooses to be--a suffering servant, a man for others. By sacrificing his life for us, Jesus throws open the gates of Paradise. CELEBRATING ST. NICHOLAS DAY
Widely celebrated in Europe, St. Nicholas' feast day, December 6th, kept alive the stories of his goodness and generosity. In Germany and Poland, boys dressed as bishops begged alms for the poor and sometimes for themselves! In the Netherlands and Belgium, St. Nicholas arrived on a steamship from Spain to ride a white horse on his gift-giving rounds. De-cember 6th is still the main day for gift giving and merrymaking in much of Europe. For example, in the Netherlands St. Nicholas' Day is celebrated with the sharing of candies (thrown in the door), chocolate initial letters, small gifts, and riddles. Dutch children leave carrots and hay in their shoes for the horse, hoping St. Nicholas will exchange them for small gifts. Simple gift-giving in early Advent helps preserve a Christmas Day focus on the Christ Child. St. Nicholas is known for giving gold or coins to those in need. So, coins make a fine shoe treat for children. A simple St. Nicholas Day celebration adds a bit of welcome festivity in the early days. It provides an opportunity to tell the story of St. Nicholas ,a man of faith whose goodness and gener-osity grew out of his love for God. It enriches our understanding of Santa Claus by showing the real historical person who inspired the familiar leg-end and traditions. So tell a story of St. Nicholas’ generous example of giving in secret to those in need. Then encourage children to identify a kindly “Nicholas deed” to do for someone else. Have children fill their shoes with pieces of carrot or bits of hay for his white horse or donkey the night before St Nick arrives and place shoes outside bedroom doors. See that candy treats and a simple gift appears by morning on December 6th.

“Record-setting generosity turned Two Good Soles into more than three thousand pairs of shoes for Pasco County children.
The annual, friendly competition between Pasco County Gov-ernment and Constitutional Offices collected 3,057 shoes and
13,285 pairs of socks to donate to Pasco County Schools. The fourth annual Two Good Soles Shoes and Socks Drive smashed
last years’ results (2,264 shoes/6,609 socks) as well as this year’s goal of 2,000 shoes set by Public Services Assistant County Administrator Cathy Pearson. Pasco County and
Constitutional Office staff gathered at Wendell Krinn Technical High School in New Port Richey Oct. 29 to officially donate the
footwear and tally the results.”
