JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Take all your chances at bridge

By Eddie Kantar

Dlr: South ♠ 7 4 3 2 Vul: Both ♥ A K 7 6 5 ♦ 3 2 ♣ Q J

♠ A K Q J 10 8 ♥ 4 3 2 ♦ A Q ♣ A K

You open a strong 2♣, partner bids 2♥ (natural) and raises your 2♠ to 3♠. You quickly arrive in 6♠ and West leads the ♣10. Plan the play in 6♠. Incidentally, how would you play 6NT on the same lead?

You start with 11 top tricks and if the hearts divide 3-2 – a 68% chance – you have an easy 12 by ducking a heart. Even if hearts are 4-1, you can set up dummy’s fifth heart for a diamond discard if you have a spade entry in dummy . . . but you don’t!

The answer is to combine your chances by discovering early on if hearts are 3-2 or 4-1. Once you know the heart division, you will know whether you need the diamond finesse.

Win the ♣A, draw trumps and lead a low heart towards dummy. If West plays any heart other than the queen, win the ace and follow with a low heart from dummy.

Now you know whether hearts are 3-2 or 4-1.

If hearts are 3-2, you can discard your ♦Q on the fourth round of hearts. If hearts are 4-1, abandon hearts and take the diamond finesse. If you duck a heart early and East wins and returns a diamond, you won’t know how hearts are breaking. You will be faced with a decision you could have avoided.

The percentage play is to go up with the ♦A and hope hearts are 3-2. It’s different if West plays the ♥Q. You must play low! If the queen is singleton, West will surely exit with another club. You can then play a heart to the ace and try the diamond finesse unless West and East both follow suit. An extra chance no matter how small is still an extra chanceesse in reserve gives you an 85% chance of landing your slam. In 6NT, run off six

spades, discarding a heart and a diamond, and then play hearts as suggested. The full deal:

♠ 7 4 3 2 ♥ A K 7 6 5 ♦ 3 2 ♣ Q J ♠ 9 ♠ 6 5 ♥ Q 10 9 8 ♥ J ♦ J 9 8 6 ♦ K 10 7 5 4 ♣ 10 9 7 6 ♣ 8 5 4 3 2 ♠ A K Q J 10 8 ♥ 4 3 2 ♦ A Q ♣ A K

For this tournament, the anecdotes you’re used to seeing at the beginning of the column are replaced by a Quick Tip at the end. Enjoy.

Getting used to duplicateBy Brent Manley

I learned bridge while serving in the U.S. Army in the early 1970s. Other soldiers in the language school I was sent to played bridge during breaks and my curiosity led me to learn more about the game. I was immediately hooked and learned as much as I could, mostly by reading. I had no idea my interest would become more intense once I discovered duplicate.

Duplicate made it clear to me that I had no idea what I was doing as a bridge player, but I found it more interesting for a number of reasons. For one, in party bridge, if you get good cards, you win. If not, you lose. In duplicate, you can win even with bad cards.

I liked that duplicate helps you gauge your progress – mine was slow initially, but perceptible – and enjoy satisfaction from small improvements.

For those who came to this tournament without a lot of experience in duplicate, prepare to enjoy yourselves. The tournament directors, volunteers and staff are here to see that you have a good time.

Bridge at tournaments has changed a lot since I started playing, mostly because of significant improvements in the process. In my first tournament, there were no bidding boxes, no electronic scoring, no ACBLscore, no hand records. All of these are available now.

Here are some tips for making the most of these advancements.

Bidding boxesYou select your bid by placing your thumb on

the bid you want to make and extracting it, plus all the bidding cards behind it, from the box. Place it on the table in front of you. Your next bid (or other “call,” such as pass or double) is also placed on the table but in such a way that your first action is still visible.

If you select a card from the bidding box that you didn’t intend to – a mechanical error, not a change of mind – and partner has not made a call (pass, bid, double or redouble), you can change your call. Be sure to call a director if something like this happens.

The Stop cardIn my time as editor of the Bridge Bulletin,

I received letters and emails fairly regularly from members advising that some players they encountered employed the Stop card to make sure their partners noticed their skip bids and to distinguish between weak jumps and strong jumps, among other inappropriate uses.

The Stop card has one purpose: to alert an opponent that a skip bid is coming so that person can pause perceptibly – roughly 10 seconds is the norm – and thus avoid giving information about his hand by a fast pass or long hesitation followed by

a pass. The Stop card is an always-or-never device. If you use it at all, you must always use it. If you don’t want to, no problem, but you must then never use it.

Electronic scoringSome old-timers rue the passing of the hand-

scored recap sheets and the scene that always followed the end of each session – all the players gathered around the TD who was scoring their section. Now players can check the BridgeMates for their scores as soon as the session is over and they can sign up for notification via smart phone, results arriving almost as quickly.

Hand recordsThis may be the best of the innovations. Players

can collect the hand-record sheets and head off to lunch or dinner for a discussion of the boards and figuring out “how in the heck can you make three spades on board 7,” as the hand record indicates.

Quick TipPlayers love to use Blackwood, the most

popular convention in the world. Whether you play regular Blackwood or a variation that counts “key cards” – the aces and the trump king – you must be careful about pulling the 4NT card from the bidding box. When you bid Blackwood, you should have no side suit with two or more quick losers – any doubleton or more without the ace or king – unless your partner has shown a control in the suit or suits in question. Be wary of using Blackwood when your trump suit is a minor, especially clubs. Partner’s response could take you past the five level of your suit and you could still be off two aces. You should have two aces to use Blackwood with a club fit, one ace with a diamond fit.

Would you like to improve your bridge game? Who wouldn’t?! Well, here’s a fabulous opportunity for you to do just that. The local I/N Program Committee has arranged for DC metro-area teachers to host a Bridge University (BU).

This free set of lessons features a special hour-long interactive lecture by Jerry Helms (starting at 9:30 a.m.), followed by half-hour presentations by local bridge teachers (starting at 10:40 a.m.) who have selected their favorite material so that you can “create your own” curriculum just like in college. There are four timeslots with four topics per time slot. You can choose up to four topics from the 16 offered.

Attend lectures in any one, two, three or all four time slots.

No need to preregister - just show up when you want. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 23.

Don’t forget to stay and play in the 3 p.m. game set up just for your skill level! This game will be followed by a special reception for those with fewer than 300 masterpoints who have attended this afternoon game.

Don’t miss this golden opportunity to learn new bridge tricks from the experts and expand your chances to win gold in DC!

Playing in an NABC+ pairs game? Buy your entry early!

In an effort to speed up the start of all NABC+ pairs events – which require additional time for proper seeding – the ACBL asks participants to please buy their entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair.

No more Appeals committees

At the Reno NABC in 2016, the ACBL Board of Directors eliminated player committees deciding appeals in NABC+ events. Players are still allowed to appeal a director’s ruling, and they initiate the process the same way as before -- by speaking with the director who delivered the original ruling. The table director will fill out paperwork regarding the appeal, and the appellants will explain what is wrong with the initial ruling. From there, the case may be handled by a variety of means. When the appeals reviewer receives the case, the circumstances of that particular case will determine whether the case can be resolved by the original staff (in the case of misapplication of Law or regulation, for instance), a panel of directors, or even a committee-type hearing which could include bridge experts.

“There is a major difference in the point structure of our two organizations,” Irwin wrote, “but I believe that we could compatibly make this work.”

Invited by ACBL President Ken Monzingo to address the full Board of Directors, Irwin talked about bettering relations between the two organizations.

Said Hartman, “We agreed to work together, and now we have to figure out the details.”

Hartman said Irwin made it clear the ABA does not want to be absorbed by the ACBL, which has been suggested over the years. “They want to stay separate,” said Hartman, “but figure out ways to partner with us.”

The ABA was founded in 1932, five years before the merger of two bridge organizations resulted in the formation of the ACBL. The ABA has headquarters in Atlanta. Irwin, who lives in Austin TX, is a retired U.S. Air Force pilot who also flew for Southwest Airlines before retiring.

Bots battle in PolandThe 20th World Computer-Bridge Championship

will take place during the World Bridge Games in Wroclaw, Poland, in September. The robot championship is supported by the ACBL and World Bridge Federation, and is sponsored this year by Ourgame, a leading card and board game company in China.

Nine top robots will compete for the title. It is truly a world event with entries from the U.S. (2), Germany, the Netherlands (2), China, Japan, France and Denmark.

Last year’s title went to Jack, defeating Wbridge5 in a close final.

The robots are used by software developers for computer games and learning software. For a review of the 20-year history, along with many articles published on robot play, visit computerbridge.com.

Everyone knows that missing four cards to an honor, it is right to play for the drop. But when you get a count of a side suit, it may affect your decision. This is based on the vacant space principle.

When the field played 4♠ by West, North obediently led a diamond as suggested by South’s overcall. You or I might falsecard by leading the 5 – in real life you would lead the 6. South cashes his three red-suit winners and leads a third diamond.

Now it is “clear” – if anything is ever clear – to ruff high, cash the other high spade and play a spade to the 10.

A trio of odds makers randomly guessed it at 60-40 in percentage terms.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and available for later inspection and review by officials.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.

Tipped off in the biddingCraig Biddle of Pittsburgh PA reported the

following deal played by opponent Fred Upton of Van Nuys CA. The two met in the round of 16 in the GNT Flight B, when Biddle’s District 5 team lost to Upton’s District 23 squad. Dlr: East ♠ A Q 3 Vul: N-S ♥ J 7 3 2 Bd: 2 ♦ A J 6 4 ♣ 10 7 ♠ K J 8 2 ♠ 7 6 4 ♥ 8 ♥ K 10 9 4 ♦ 7 ♦ 10 5 3 2 ♣ A Q J 9 8 3 2 ♣ 6 4 ♠ 10 9 5 ♥ A Q 6 5 ♦ K Q 9 8 ♣ K 5 West North East South Pass 1♦ 2♣ Dbl Pass 2♥ 3♣ 4♥ Dbl All Pass

Upton was South and received the lead of the ♥8, ducked in dummy and won with the ♥Q. He next played the ♠9 and passed it. Another spade finesse was followed by the ♠A and four rounds of diamonds ending in dummy, as West pitched three clubs. Declarer then ran the ♣10 to West, who won the jack and cashed the ♣A. This was the ending: ♠ — ♥ J 7 3 ♦ — ♣ — ♠ K ♠ — ♥ — ♥ K 10 9 ♦ — ♦ — ♣ Q 9 ♣ — ♠ — ♥ A 6 5 ♦ — ♣ —

West was forced to exit with a black card. Declarer ruffed low in dummy, as East overruffed with the 9. Upton underruffed with 5, leaving East – Biddle – on lead and endplayed in trumps.

Plus 790 was good for a 7-IMP gain for District 23 as West declared 5♣ doubled at the other table, down two, for plus 500 N-S.

Biddle noted that had he simply passed instead of doubling 4♥, declarer would likely have not gotten the layout right. Had the contract failed, the District 5 team would have gained 12 IMPs instead of losing 7. The final margin of victory for District 23 in the match? Twelve IMPs.

Convention card reminderEach player is required to have a convention card

filled out legibly and on the table throughout a session. The convention card must include the first and last name of each member of the partnership, and the cards must be identical.

If a director determines that neither player has a substantially completed card, the partnership may play only the Standard American Yellow Card and may use only standard carding. This restriction may be lifted only at the beginning of a subsequent round after convention cards have been properly prepared and approved by the director.

Further, the partnership will receive a 1/6-board matchpoint penalty for each board played, commencing with the next round and continuing until the restriction is lifted. In IMP team games, penalties shall be at the discretion of the director.

If the director determines the partnership has at least one substantially completed convention card but has not fully complied with ACBL regulations, the director may give warnings or assign such penalties as he deems to be appropriate under the circumstances.

The objective of these warnings and penalties is the encouragement of full compliance with ACBL regulations.

Garozzo and Forquet, together again!

By Barry Rigal Dlr: West ♠ J 9 6 Vul: None ♥ Q 7 4 ♦ A Q 5 3 2 ♣ Q 2 ♠ K Q ♠ A 10 7 4 3 ♥ 8 6 ♥ K 10 3 ♦ K J 7 4 ♦ 9 8 6 ♣ 10 9 8 4 3 ♣ 6 5 ♠ 8 5 2 ♥ A J 9 5 2 ♦ 10 ♣ A K J 7 West North East South Pass Pass Pass 1♥ Pass 2♣ Pass 4♥ All Pass

North’s 2♣ was Drury, showing a limit raise in hearts.

This board demonstrated great partnership trust. Against our 4♥, West started with the ♠K. East encouraged and West continued with the ♠Q. East overtook with the ♠A and gave his partner a ruff. Eureka!

Declarer surely didn’t need and couldn’t use a discard, and West would have continued with a low spade with Q-x remaining, so this was thoughtful defense.

Who, you might ask, were these masked banditti emulating Forquet and Garozzo? Ah, there I am afraid we must ask for an amnesty – to quote Dr. Watson.

After ruffing the third spade, West shifted to . . . a trump! Another nice write-up, stillborn.

Electronic Device Policy 1.11.1 The electronic device policy at NABCs

allows players to bring electronic devices into the playing area. Except for health-related equipment and/or by permission of the Director-in-Charge of the tournament, all such devices must be inoperable and turned off.

1.11.2 Any device capable of either sending or receiving electronic signals must not be visible during the session.

1.11.3 This policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, play recorders and kibitzers with the exception of those persons designated by the ACBL. This policy is in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

1.11.4 A violation of the policy will result in an automatic penalty pursuant to Law 91 of the Laws of Duplicate Bridge of one full board at matchpoints/board-a-match scoring, 12 IMPs at IMP pairs/knockouts or 20% maximum of VPs available per match in a Swiss team event for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be required to leave the playing area for the remainder of that session.

Whether you are a beginner or returning to bridge, it’s the perfect place to start.

Slow play: The curse of the game

By Patty JohnsonAn old tournament director friend of mine, John

“Spider” Harris, was famous for the saying: “Slow play is the curse of the game.” Nothing is more frustrating for tournament directors than having to herd players along like cattle when slow play isn’t actually the problem.

If you take a moment to think about it, most of your opponents do not take that long to bid or play

a deal – yet before you know it, the round is being called and you are nowhere near finished with the last board.

Here are some suggestions which, if followed, would solve many of our problems.

First: Do not postmortem between deals whether you are in a pair game or a Swiss team event. Finish the round and then discuss hands if there is still time. We, as directors, will not cut your time but I think you will find yourselves under less pressure by following this suggestion. Remember: We provide hand records in pair games so you don’t have to worry about forgetting a particular holding.

Second: If you are on opening lead, make your lead before recording the contract in your private score. You will have plenty of time after leading to record the information and still see the entire first trick.

Third: Unless you have a legitimate reason to leave the table, such as the restroom or a smoke break, please remain at the table and visit with your opponents. You might actually find this enjoyable and a new way to make friends or future Swiss team partnerships.

I wish we could make these suggestions into rules enforceable by penalty, but none of us wants a bridge event decided by the pair with the fewest penalties. All I can do as a director is to ask the cooperation and help of all players because I think not only you but everyone else will enjoy their tournaments more.

Remember: Those who enjoy a tournament will continue to play. Do your part to make bridge enjoyable for yourself, your partner and your opponents – you can’t play without them.

Patty Johnson of Sebring FL, is a retired National Tournament Director.

In Memory of His Caddying Times David Cappelletti Friday-Saturday

Morning Compact KOSponsored by Friends of David Cappelletti

A caddy par excellence, David always smiled and greeted the players even if they never returned his greeting or his smile. He enjoyed watching us slowly react in kind when he brought boards or pickup slips back in the days when we used them in pair games. He was always helpful and pro-active in doing whatever needed to be done without being asked. We are sure he would be here in DC with us out of nostalgia if he could.

The Bette Dudka Friday-Sunday Morning Side Game Series

Sponsored by Betty Shuler in memory of BetteBette Dudka was a long-time volunteer in the DC

area, acting as NVBA Unit President, NVBA Recorder, District 6 Secretary, and President of the Mid-Atlantic Bridge Conference (MABC). She also represented District 6 on the ACBL Board of Governors for many years. Her favorite role was as NVBA Sectional Tournament Chair and MABC Regional Tournament Chair, positions she held for almost 20 years. She was a Member of the ACBL Goodwill Committee, and a Gold Life Master at the time of her passing in June 2006.

Norma Pierzchala Friday-Saturday Bracketed KO Teams

Sponsored by Mary Louise Viereck“I am paying tribute to a District 6 member of long

standing. I met her in 1999 when she gave me my first bridge lesson. Since then, she has been my mentor and my friend. She always has a smile on her face and is complimentary to everyone. She has been an officer, a director, a teacher and a player. I have seen her handle “Zero Tolerance” cases in a very diplomatic manner. Norma is always ready to assist other directors in a myriad of ways. In addition to all of her wonderful qualities, she also makes excellent fudge!”
