Children are everywhere – on footpaths, in bastis, in makeshift schools and housing societies, but where are the storytellers? Ajay Dasgupta * likes to take his bag of stories out and about to all children, no matter where. Chennai-based visual artist Ashwathy P.S. loves to explore art, transforming a simple piece of paper into a whole new multi- sensory experience. Her passion for art came very early, while learning to draw as a child. When Bijal Vachharajani * is not reading Harry Potter, she can be found traipsing around the jungles of India. In her spare time, she works as a consultant editor and writes about education for sustainable development. Champa Saha * is a teacher, special educator and counsellor who has been reading, listening to and telling stories ever since she can remember. After 20 years with DK as editor and manager, Glenda Fernandes now heads communication and branding at the world’s leading illustrated reference publisher of high-quality books and online resources for children and adults. John Dougherty * is an Irish poet, singer and songwriter who writes very silly books. They’ve been critically acclaimed nationally and internationally, but more importantly, they make children giggle. Actor and singer Kailash Waghmare sleeps, dreams and thinks theatre. He is a Master in Arts in Theatre Arts and spends most of his time doing what he loves most. Acting. Kala Ramesh * is a word magician who was bitten by the haiku-bug in 2005. She can easily help you juggle some words and create Haiku - the world’s shortest poem. Or show you the trick of writing a wordless poem. Dr Karishma Mahbubani is a storyteller with an avid love for early childhood education, books, shoes and her family, but not necessarily in that order. She lives by the beach and calls Chennai her home. Katie Bagli is an avid nature lover who expresses her passion through her story books. When she is not writing she enjoys nature trails, wildlife workshops, storytelling and even puppet shows for children. Dr Kavita Gupta Merchant, scientist by qualification and artist by choice, expresses her creativity through clay believing that clay is more flexible than an acrobat and helps to bring out the Michelangelo in us all. Most of Kavitha Mandana’s energy is spent baby-sitting a high-maintenance Labrador, who at the age of five, still needs a lap to sleep on. When her lap is free, Kavitha writes books for children. Leah Verghese is a burnt-out lawyer who now works as a policy specialist. In her free time, she loves exploring the world, camera in hand. Miel Sahgal loves reading, writing and trying to decipher the delightful workings of children’s minds. She enjoys spending time in the wilds, or staring at the trees outside her window. Kids and animals are her favourite teachers. Padma Damodaran wears many hats - actor, director, choreographer, writer, trainer and, now, storyteller. A little sparrow perches on the window of her Mumbai flat with a new story every day. Padma takes these stories around the world. At seven, Pereena Lamba began scribbling in her secret diary and hasn’t put her pen down since. A writing gypsy, she’s written advertising copy, a graphic novel, school lesson plans, lifestyle articles and a few children’s stories. Priya Kuriyan * is an illustrator and animation film designer whose forte is the visual art of storytelling. When she’s not Illustrating she is usually travelling to places (sometimes imaginary) far and near. Savio Mascarenhas’ is the creative mind behind Super Suppandi, the super avatar of Suppandi. He is also the artist for Little Shambu, based on the childhood adventures of Shikari Shambu. Shalini Tayal * , storyteller and trainer, is a story-worm who takes her listeners on story walks through exotic fairylands, deep oceans and dark forests while stopping to sip tea with field mice and share samosas with monsters. Suman Chitrakar is a Patua artist from West Bengal. He has been creatively infusing new themes to the traditional art form of Patua, and has evolved a distinctive style of his own. Don’t let Surabhi Gupta’s petite frame fool you! Having a master’s degree in business marketing makes her a persuasive marketing whizz. She can also turn out a mean crafts idea or two in no time flat. Suzzanne Rebello Naaraayan is an artist who combines her love for nature with her ability to infuse a sprinkling of magic to make the inanimate dance with life, so that every picture tells a story.
