IOI Corp Bhd is challenging a decision by the RSPO in Zurich to suspend its sustainable certification, claiming that it did no wrong. The Federal Land Development Authority and its listed 33.7% associate Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd has voluntarily withdrawn the RSPO certificates for its palm oil mills, saying the move was done in the best interest of its smallholders. RSPO-certified palm oil is sold at a slight premium compared to uncertified products. Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world and is found in an estimated 50% of supermarket products. Nestle, Unilever, Colgate- Palmolive, Johnson & Johnson and Kellogg are among the major consumers of palm oil that source their supplies from RSPO-certified producers. 3,000 2,600 2,200 1,800 MAY MARCH JAN NOV SEPT JULY RM2,587 per tonne CPO PRICE CHART (RM) MAY 3.00 2.25 1.50 0.75 0 CSPO PRODUCTION AREA (ha) ‘08 ‘09 ‘10 ‘11 ‘12 ‘13 ‘14 ‘15 ‘16 ‘08 ‘09 ‘10 ‘11 ‘12 ‘13 ‘14 ‘15 ‘16 (million) 16 12 8 4 0 CSPO AND CS KERNEL VOLUME (tonnes) (million) CSPO Certified Sustainable Kernel volume CSPO: Certified sustainable palm oil 21 % OF TOTAL GLOBAL SUPPLY RSPO-CERTIFIED PRODUCTS MAKE UP 12.9 million tonnes RSPO MEMBERS (2,819 members) 333 MILLS 67 GROWERS 1,929 COMPANIES IN THE SUPPLY CHAIN 3,271 CERTIFIED FACILITIES ©The Star Graphics
