Do-maćice uređuju kuće i sta-nove, domaćini svoje bašte.

E very spring, there is something in the Bel-grade air that adds extra importance to ev-erything. It is noticed in the passageways, sensed in the garden cafes and is especially

strong on the balconies of the city, where life fl our-ishes with dignity and restraint.

Kalemegdan fortress and Knez Mihailova Street, as well as the streets throughout the city, begin to wake up from the long winter and welcome a new

generation of boys and girls. Safeguarded by Belgrade during winter, they are now ready to leave their mark on the city.

With spring also comes the inevitable spring-clean-ing. Ladies take care of the houses and fl ats whilst the men get green-fi ngered in the gardens. Parks and lawns get cleaned, cars are washed

frequently, and the garden cafes start to fi ll up with those who may be making their fi rst public appear-ance. e big decision of which cafes and inns in which to dwell is made, and these places become second homes until winter returns.

You can’t help but notice spring in Belgrade. It’s in the clothes you’ve outgrown and passed on to your younger brother; in the ladies of Belgrade that cause your head to turn realizing that a new , unconquered world is emerging. As winter ends dreams blossom once more, and Belgrade comes alive with expecta-tion.

Spring also brings new construction and reno-vations, as eff orts are made to preserve the skin of

U Beogradu u proleće počinje izgradnja i renovi-ranje.

Sve ostalo u Beogradu, u proleće, nadvisuje i kro-vove i oblake.

one of Europe’s oldest cities. One idea in particular is vital for the construction process: never build the doors bigger than the house. is is only boundary. Everything else is possible.

Whether it is the history that captures the gaze of visitors, the smiles in the streets that widen our boulevards or the gardens and parks that transport us back to childhood, everything is heightened in Belgrade during springtime. en there is Avala, our only mountain, placed among Belgrade`s hills re-flecting in two rivers, the Sava and the Danube, the rivers that gather our surroundings and reflect mir-ror images of the city roofs. If you look close enough into the reflection of the clouds, you may just see fish swimming in the sky.

Belgrade is beautiful in spring, and this is also true of our guests that become more beautiful with every passing day spent in our city, as they become true Belgraders.

48Dakle, doneli ste mudru odluku da prove-

dete 48h u Beogradu!

So you’ve made the wise decision to spend 48 hours in Belgrade! Obviously, the rst question that springs to our mind is ‘why only 48?!’ A two-day stop in a city of Belgra-de’s size, with its incredible history, variety of sights, tastes, sounds and more will leave your appetite whetted and the journey away from our fair city will be a di cult one. But 48 hours it is, and there’s more than enough hidden within our 17 municipalities to make sure each moment is as enthralling as the last. All this without mentioning the vibrancy and humour of her almost two million citizens! We best get started.

Where better to start than the very centre? Knez Mihailova is Belgrade’s modern day epi-centre, a pedestrian street that

is packed from morning to night. 48 hours could be spent idling around the many cafes on the street, nipping in and out of the high street shops, eating various culinary delights or simply gawping at the street musicians. Belgrade Art Hotel is located here, where you can stay in modernly equipped rooms and have a good rest, because a quiet night is a guarantee. Just steps away from the hotel explore many historical and cultural sights and attractions while soaking a lively urban atmosphere during your visit to Belgrade. Hotel restaurant has a pleas-ant atmosphere overlooking the Knez Mihailova street, off ering excellent specialties of local and in-ternational cuisine.

Knez Mihailova is bookended by two of the city’s top spots. Terazije is at its head, known for the grand Hotel Moskva. e Moskva is one of the oldest hotels in Serbia (its offi cial opening was in 1908), and is an architectural gem that has special protected status. A photo-must for sure, but our ti-ght schedule won’t allow for much more than that. Continue towards Nikola Pašić Square and the gargantuan former National Assembly of Serbia

uživajući u mnogobrojnim uličnim kafeima, ra-zgledajući i kupujući u prodavnicama visoke mode, degustirajući različite gastronomske specijalitete ili jednostavno posmatrajući ulične muzičare.

will come into view. is leads directly onto Bule-var Kralja Aleksandra, which at 7.5km is the long-est street in Belgrade. Don’t worry, we aren’t going to ask you to walk its entirety, but it is defi nitely worth a stroll as it is full of interesting landmarks, including Belgrade City Hall (the former Roy-al Palace), Pioneer’s Park and more. Stroll as far up as Tašmajdan Park, one of the most graceful green areas of the city and also home to St Mark’s

Church. Tašmajdan is an excellent place to pick up an ice cream, take a seat and do a little spot of people watching. Don’t stop for too long however, we’ve more to see.

One of the streets parallel to Bulevar Kralja Alek-sandra is called Krunska, and it is here that we fi nd our next stop. e Nikola Tesla Museum is a must for anyone interested in the incredible technology

we are so lucky to have in the 21st century, as our man Tesla is often credited as the spark that set it off . A permanent exhibition sits in the small build-

ing, and we recommend popping in to learn more about this incredible man and his equally incredible mind. When you’re done, head down Beogradska Street and you’ll shortly fi nd yourself on Slavija Square. You can’t really miss this huge square, and crossing the roads is almost a tourist attraction in itself.

We’re joking of course, and a short walk from Slavija Square up Bulevar Oslobodenja will bring you to St Sava Church. One of Belgrade’s most recog-nisable landmarks, it is a truly stunning sight, just what you would expect from the Balkan’s largest orthodox church. One particularly fascinating aspect for the secular visitor however is that the interior of the church remains

largely undecorated, granting unique access and a new view of its architectural splendour. Within the grounds of the church we also fi nd a monument to Karađorđe, considered the founder of Modern Serbia. And to feel the spirit of modern, contem-

Save.

porary Belgrade, do not miss a visit to cafe Ceger! Close to the temple, in Skerlićeva Street, with an inevitable cafe latte and cold-pressed fruit mix let yourself go to its cozy and urban atmosphere. e interior, the details, the play of light, the murmur of people who forget their smartphones and like each other face to face will win you over.

It’s time to eat, surely? A short walk from the Zira Shopping Center on Preradovićeva Street, Zlatar is famous for its delicious domestic cuisine and re-gional specialities, top-class service and remarkably friendly staff . e ingredients that come together to create the menu are as fresh as you’ll fi nd, with daily supplies of cheese, kajmak (fresh cream cheese), all

U ovom fascinantnom zdanju možete videti mnogobrojne poklone date predsedniku Jugoslavije

kinds of meat and more. It may only be lunchtime but it’s okay to treat yourself to a glass of rakija, it helps your digestion after all. More than 25 fl avours are available, and we’re particularly fond of the Dunja (quince).

One thing that may have come to your attention already is that we’ve so far managed to traverse Bel-grade on foot. It’s time to jump on some public transport however, so pick yourself up a Bus Plus card from one of the many kiosks around St Sava Church, buy two journeys and take a brief walk down Pasterova Street and jump on trolleybus 40 or 41 and take the short journey out to the House of Flowers. e stop to get off at is simply called Muzej Maj 25 (May 25 Museum), and the large museum complex is visible out the right side of the bus. Here we fi nd the Museum of the History of Yugoslavia as well as Tito’s Mausoleum. A fascinating muse-um in its own right, the many presents given to the Yugoslav leader during his life are on show here, as well as the batons used in the annual Youth Relay that crossed Yugoslavia during Tito’s life. Spend a good hour wandering around the collection, before jumping on the trolleybus and heading back to town.

Get off the trolley where you joined it and con-tinue walking on Kneza Miloša Street. e street is best known these days for the two buildings sat here that were destroyed during the NATO bombing campaign against Yugoslavia in 1999. Regardless of one’s opinion, these can’t be avoided. Kneza Miloša joins onto Kralja Milana Street, which leads us handily back down to Terazije. Instead of heading back down Knez Mihailova at this point, we suggest leaning to the right and heading round to Republic Sqaure, the number one meeting point in the city. Dominated by a statue of Prince Mihailo on horse-back, if you’re told to meet ‘by the horse’ then this is the place. e National eatre and National Museum are also found here.

Heading further down Vase Čarapiće Street we fi nd ourselves passing Student Square, yet another delightful park in Belgrade. No time to stop howev-

Provedite dobar sat u razgledanju, a

er, as Belgrade’s fi nest spot is within our grasp. We mentioned the two spots that bookend Knez Mi-hailova at the beginning, and we’re frankly shocked we’ve managed to hold off heading into Kalemeg-dan Fortress until this point. It started life as a vital military fortress, but this huge complex is now Belgrade’s central park and the lungs and heart of the city. Full of busts of historical Serbs, it is also home to a number of Belgrade’s most recognisable monuments.

Within Kalemegdan we fi nd the Military Mu-seum, whose impressive collection of photos and objects is well worth a look. e true gem of the park (and arguably our favourite thing to see and do in Belgrade) is found further within. e Po-bednik(Winner) monument is one of the most recognisable sights in the city, and for good reason, but your eye will quickly be drawn from this naked statue to the view down below. Belgrade sits on the Confl uence of the Sava and Danube Rivers, and this vantage point is without doubt the best po-sition to take in this majesty. We whole heartedly recommend heading here for the sunset, as there really is no more romantic way to herald the end of the day. Within easy reach of these historical determinants of Belgrade, in Kralja Petra St. ho-tel Booking Rooms is located. An ideal choice for those who need privacy and comfort in one place. If

Nastavljajući dalje ulicom Vase Čarapića, do-lazimo do Studentskog trga, još jednog prelepog beogradskog parka.

you decide to stay in Booking Rooms during your Belgrade visit, your choise is an excellent location, elegant and warm hotel and all at aff ordable prices. Modern combination of contemporary service and traditional feel is a guarantee of a good rest before of what awaits in nearby nightclubs.

e end of the day can only mean one thing, and this is the beginning of the night. Belgrade is famed for its nightlife, and something for everyone can be found. Near Kalemegdan is the central district of Dorćol, home to some of the coolest cafes in the city, many of which have gorgeous outdoor ter-races. Here we also fi nd the famous street called Strahinjića Bana, although you may have heard it referred to as ‘Silicon Valley’. Extending from Kalemegdan, this street is full of interesting bars and restaurants, and it handily leads us to a cross-raoad of modernog and Belgrade as it used to be.

It seems that most cities worth their salt to-day have a Bohemian Quarter, but even in this

regard Belgrade manages to provide something unique. If Kalemegdan is Belgrade’s heart and lungs, Skadarlija could be called its soul. A sin-gle cobblestoned street, Ska-darska Street is full of bars, restaurants and the sounds of traditional Serbian mu-

sic. It is here that we fill our bellies once more. Almost everywhere on the street is worth a stop, with Guli getting our vote. Food plays a huge role in everyday Serbian life, and you won’t be leav-ing hungry. You’re unlikely to leave thirsty either, and dancing in the street is a very real possibility.

Dancing in the street often leads to dancing in-doors, and Belgrade has a great nightlife reputation for a reason. e riverside area called Savamala is without doubt the place to head, where a variety of bars and clubs with DJs, live music and more can keep the fun fl owing late into the night.

Our fi rst 24 hours were packed to say the least,

Upravo ovde ćemo još jednom napuniti svoje sto-make.

so we’ll take it a little easier on the second day. After picking up some much-needed coff ee, head to the Sports Center on the riverside in front of Kale-megdan and rent a bike. Yes, you read that right. Whilst the very centre of Belgrade may not seem like the most hospitable of habitats for the bicycle, a stunning cycling path leads all the way from the Dorćol Marina to our fi rst relaxation spot of the

day, Ada Ciganlija. Ada is an artifi cial lake in Bel-grade with an 8km long gravel beach and numer-ous cafes, bars and res-taurants. is truly is the perfect place to relax, and a great spot for lunch too. e cycle path extends all around the lake, so pedal from café to restaurant and see Ada from all sides.

We could easily spend all day idling away at Ada, but it’s time to jump back on the bike and head back on the path towards the centre. Stop at Branko’s Bridge, head up the lift and cycle across the bridge before heading back down to the riverside. e Sava bleeds into the Danube, so follow the path that winds around Europe’s second longest river

On the right bank of the Dan-ube, Kej Yachting Club is a true must-stop. Add to this a quality menu and ex-ceptional hospitality, and you’d be forgiven for not wanting to leave. Club organizes daily cruises on the Danube and Sava.

Zemun has a history every bit as fascinating as that of Belgrade itself. With its diff erent architectural feel, parks and splendid cafes Zemun is a joy to cycle around, but it is the hilly area called Gardoš that pro-vides the most interest, dominated by the Millenium Tower at its peak.

intervju / interview

1. A lot of your paintings feature various women. Are these women from Belgrade? Do you take inspiration from this city?Belgrade is where I was born, and as such it is my infinite source of inspiration. It is a city full of different motivati-ons that I have looked for and always found. I am emotio-nally connected to Belgrade, and many of my paintings are the result of going away from the city and subsequently returning, with my return always inspiring a whole new series of paintings. Belgrade has a certain lethality and as such is full of chance meetings with a whole range of cha-racters. I can excitedly observe a woman at Kalenić market

from my window, or something as simple as noticing a passer-by whilst sitting at a café. Women are my main creative preo-ccupation, as well as friends for day and night. ey are a metaphorical symbol of the sensuality of this city.

2. You live in Vračar, one of the most beautiful parts of Belgrade. Can you recommend to our readers the perfect place for a morning coffee? When I leave my workspace, I usually follow the streets leading towards St. Sava’s temple; either that or I head down Njegoševa Street. ere are numerous cafes in the area, as well as a number of restaurants with all sorts of cuisine on offer. Depending on the sights and moods, I usually stop in one of the cafes,

drink my morning coffee and read the daily newspapers.

3. What are Belgrade’s ‘must-see’ sights?e markets are the true essence of the city, and I would personally recommend Kalenić market in Vračar, with its excellent fresh fruit. St. Sava’s temple should not be mi-ssed, as well as walking to and around Kalemegdan fortre-ss with its views of the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers.

4. When will we enjoy your paintings in some of Belgrade galleries?ere are plans for an exhibition next year in one of the city’s galleries, but until then a permanent exhibition of my paintings and drawings can only be seen in my art studio.

Cile Marinković, beogradski slikar čije je ime dobro poznato umetničkim krugovima Pariza i Njujorka. Stvarnost boji jarkim tonovima i prenosi na svoja platna. Za Belgrade info guide govori

o Beogradu…

Skadarlija / Bohemian quarterSkadarska ulica, poznatija kao “Skadarlija” ili “boemska če-tvrt” je nastala krajem 19. veka i od samog početka je pred-stavljala omiljeno mesto gradskih boema, pesnika i drugih umetnika. ose lucky enough to wake up in Belgrade this morning, can consider they have achieved enough for today. Any insistence on further achievements would be immodest.

Pas-senger pays only the price of taxi ride according to the cur-rent pricelist and in the amount displayed on the taximeter at the end of the ride. e price in-cludes transport of passenger’s personal luggage. Transporta-tion of pets is possible with the driver’s consent. Negotiating a price for taxi services, where the taxi meter is not switched on, is not recommended.
