NOMINATIONS TO THE SALPN COUNCIL
In 2016, there are three Member-At-Large positions that are
up for election in Zones 1, 3 and 5.
How do you determine which zone you are in? Your electoral
zone is based on your principal place of employment, not
your place of residence.
Zones 1, 3 and 5 are defined as follows:
ZONE 1 - WEST
All health agencies within the Heartland, Cypress and Five
Hills Health Region
ZONE 3 – SASKATOON CITY
All health agencies within the Saskatoon city limits
ZONE 5 – EAST
All health agencies within the Sunrise, Sun Country
and Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region (excluding the
city of Regina)
What will be expected of you as a member of the
SALPN Council?
LENGTH OF TERM:
Each Member-At-Large is elected to a three year term and
represents one of five electoral zones. A Member-At-Large
can run for two consecutive terms of three years each.
COMMITMENTS:
• Attends Council meetings (2 day meetings 5 times
per year)
• Sits on SALPN Committees (2 to 6 meetings per year)
• Attends the SALPN AGM)
• May be involved in external activities
• Prepares for meetings and activities (2 to 10 hours
per month).
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Makes decisions in the best interests of the public
• Develops a good understanding of the profession and all
the SALPN’s documents
• Brings a strong voice at the Council table
• Represents and complies with Council decisions
• Conducts oneself in a professional manner
• Is a positive ambassador for the SALPN
• Represents the highest standards of the profession.

CHALLENGING BEHAVIOURS INYOUTH -Strategies for Intervention Saskatoon: April 26, 2016
This workshop will review challenging behaviours related to aggression, non-compliance and attention-seeking, and will provide a framework for intervening. Participants will analyze the effectiveness of their current approach and be provided with a coaching model to bring out the best in youth who exhibit challenging behaviour.
MINDFULNESSCOUNSELLINGSTRATEGIES -ActivatingCompassion and Regulation Regina: May 5-6, 2016
This workshop is designed to teach participants how to facilitate development of these skills with their clients and develop their own capacity for using mindfulness-based strategies in their counselling work. Participants will practice mindfulness, regulation and activation strategies meant to promote self-awareness and emotional balance.
DE-ESCALATING POTENTIALLYVIOLENTSITUATIONS™ Saskatoon: May 17, 2016; Regina: May 19, 2016
This workshop is designed to teach people to de-escalate potentially violent situations through assertiveness and interpersonal communication. Participants will develop a clear understanding of how to assess the potential for violence and respond with a diverse set of tools and strategies designed to defuse potentially violent situations.
CRITICAL INCIDENTGROUP DEBRIEFING Saskatoon: May 18, 2016
This training will focus on how to organize effectively and quickly after a critical incident so that groups are better prepared to respond to the emotional needs of those affected by a tragedy.A key component of the training is review of aCrisis ResponseChecklist, an important tool when managing the complexities of a critical incident.
TRAUMA-Strategies for Resolving the Impact of Post-TraumaticStress Regina: June 1-2, 2016
This workshop provides an overview of the way trauma affects a person through the brain and nervous system.A framework which describes different stages in resolving the impact of trauma is reviewed and key principles and strategies that apply to a diverse range of impacts in children, adolescents and adults are explored.

This workshop is designed to give helpers an increased awareness of the dynamics of grief and to provide tools and strategies to best support someone who is grieving.Cultural and popular understandings of grief and loss, and the influences these have on how we experience and work with grief, will be explored.
WORKINGWITH FAMILIES-Strategies for Engaging and Helping Saskatoon: June 15-16, 2016
This workshop provides information to help understand common dynamics at play within family systems. Participants will learn strategies for engaging and working with more than one person at a time and also ways to consider including the impact of family when working with individuals.
UNDERSTANDING MENTAL ILLNESS Saskatoon: July 12, 2016; Regina: July 14, 2016
This workshop is designed for managers, social service providers, human resource professionals and anyone seeking a better understanding of the complexities that surround mental illness. Participants will be provided with a general overview of common adult mental illnesses and their symptoms, causes and treatment.
COUNSELLINGSKILLS-An Introduction andOverview Saskatoon: July 13-15, 2016
This introductory workshop is designed for those new to counselling or those wishing to enhance their general helping skills. Participants will learn about the process of counselling and how to use a problem-solving model to work with clients to identify issues, and implement plans and activities to address areas of concern.
AUTISM-Strategies forSelf-Regulation, Learning andChallenging Behaviours Saskatoon: February 9-10, 2016
This workshop will provide practical strategies for working with high need individuals around self-regulation, learning practices and challenging behaviours. Participants will review a behavioural framework to provide effective strategies for each of these areas, which they will be able to adapt to their own specific environment and context.
ADDICTIONSAND MENTAL ILLNESS -Working withCo-occurring Disorders Saskatoon: March 7, 2016; Regina: March 9, 2016
This workshop provides a framework for working systemically with both issues at the same time. Participants will explore the impact of both addiction and mental illness, an overview of the theoretical frameworks for both issues, and how to integrate strategies in a way that supports health and change.
ADDICTIONSANDYOUTH-CreatingOpportunities forChange Regina: March 10, 2016
This workshop moves beyond substance use and abuse to also explore behavioural/ process addiction such as Internet, gaming and pornography. Participants of this workshop will consider issues that make working with youth different than working with adults and explore short term and longer term intervention strategies.

Drawing from the approaches of Motivational Interviewing, Positive Discipline and Internal FamilySystems Model, this experiential workshop will equip helping professionals with an enhanced style and new strategies that will strengthen their therapeutic relationships and maximize potential for motivating change.

This workshop provides a communication and decision-making model to help businesses, schools, organizations and communities become more effective in their management of threats. Participants will learn strategies to help them identify, assess and manage individuals who may be escalating towards violence.
ANXIETY-Practical InterventionStrategies Saskatoon: April 5, 2016; Regina: April 7, 2016
This workshop will explore when anxiety is adaptive and in order, compared to when it becomes disordered. Participants will learn practical and accessible strategies which can be applied across the lifespan and address the physical, emotional, cognitive and social aspects of anxiety.
DEPRESSION- Practical InterventionStrategies
Saskatoon: April 6, 2016; Regina: April 8, 2016
This workshop reviews a variety of effective strategies that can be used to help an individual who is struggling with depression. Participants will learn practical strategies to help engage the depressed person on two levels: changing the negative relationship within oneself and changing interpersonal dynamics that perpetuate depression.
BULLYING- Responding for Prevention Saskatoon: April 25, 2016
This workshop will push beyond attitudes and responses that rely solely on isolation and punishment and move towards more restorative responses, while at the same time holding perpetrators of bullying accountable. Participants will develop skills to put a stop to bullying behaviour while strengthening individuals and groups to prevent future harm.
Each year the SALPN conducts Licensure Audits of the membership. The purpose of the annual licensure audit is to verify
information provided at the time of renewal as well as for compliance with the requirements related to registration and
licensure. Members who are selected for audit will be notified with an initial letter and by email.
The following information may be requested as part of the audit:
• Continuing Education Portfolio Points – proof of completion
• Actual Hours of Work
• Criminal Record Check (CRC)
The SALPN members selected for the CRC audit will be reimbursed the cost of a “satisfactory” check, provided the original
receipt of payment is supplied. The annual licensure audit will begin January 4, 2016.
