This project will unfold over the next 12 months. The shell design is inspired by a traditional Sashiko pattern. The shells will be filled with designs inspired by blackwork, open work and lacey backgrounds. A sampler to try different patterns in tiny bits. You can use your own canvas and stitch the outline from January 2014 Stitchguide. Here is the order of the shells.

Red - M46 cotton 3 ply Step 1 diagram: Start at the top (see the right spot) and stitch right angles in a column to the bottom. Stitch the column to the right from top to bottom. Stitch all columns (8) same way. Following the arrows hides the thread behind. Step 2: Same thread but stitch the blue color in diagram in columns from top to bottom. 1-9 on down. Second column is a-d on down. Black - O537 silk - 4 of 6 Step 3: Stitch from top 1 to 4 on down, then a to e on down.
Blue long stitches: O5367 silk Step 1: Start left side, lay long threads up and down in the pattern. Green: M30 cotton 3 ply Step 2: Start at the lower center point and stitch the double X, count up and stitch another double X - there are 4 on that center line. Stitch all double Xs. Step 3: with same thread, marked as darker green on diagram, stitch a diagonal connecting the top Xs. Step 4: Same thread connect top Xs in other direction. Anchor the backside in the shell on turns to hide thread. Red : M46 3 ply cotton with oblong cross stitch, keeping back thread hidden by Step 1. Anchor behind at top and bottom.
