SARTELL CONNECTION MAR - APR 2018 3

My Turn… History is Important. by Jan Sorell

Who are you? No, I mean really, who are you? Dig deeper. Where did you grow up: on a farm, in a small town, in a city? What about your family: large, small? Your extended family: grand-parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, did they live nearby or did you have to travel a distance to visit them? Where did you go to school: one room country school, consolidated town school or a large modern school? What about your spiritual life, did you worship regularly? Where: church, synagogue or mosque? Think of your friends: one or more close friends, or a lot of friends? What did you do together?

All of these and so much more make up your own personal history. Uniquely yours. Your history defines you. It forms the basis of who you are today and the decisions you make for your future. At my book club yesterday as we discussed the growing up of the main character on a poor farm in northwestern North Dakota, I watched the eyes light up of individuals there who grew up in similar circumstances. Times were tough, work was hard, responsibilities great for even the very young, yet they reveled in remembering and comparing with others with similar histories.

The same can be said for places, the places where you grew up. What happened before your birth? Events there formed the background, the basis for why that place is different from any other. Sartell has grown rapidly. When my husband and I moved here as young adults, the population was less that 900. Most of the growth has taken place in the past 25 years so the majority of its residents are not familiar with its history, nor will their children be, unless we make efforts now to preserve it.

We have a prime example in the paper mill, literally wiped off the face of the earth, but what a rich history! Information, memorabilia, its influence on the development of Sartell must be preserved and made available for future generations before it is lost. ...see HISTORY on pg. 11

SARTELL CONNECTION MAR - APR 2018 4

Sartell Senior Connection

The library in the Sartell Community Center has been a busy place this winter. There have been numerous donations (including some popular DVDs) and many new patrons. Two additional shelving units were placed in the adult book area on Friday, February 16. Many of the larger books will be placed on these shelves, as well as all of the adult books that were in the children's section.

Adult puzzles have been donated. We will create a section for these puzzles in the adult area. However, the puzzles must be done at home not in the library.

The children's section is continuing to be reorganized with icons on the shelves to help children as well as their caregivers return the books to the correct shelf!

Signs have been placed around the library encouraging patrons to return books to the shelves from which they were taken or the book cart. This will greatly help our library volunteers.

GRRL has added another delivery date for the books on reserve. Twice a week - Tuesdays and Fridays.

Look for some special displays on gardening, fishing and summer sports, this spring.

Book suggestions:

The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown

The New York Times Bestseller is "an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times". It is a true account of nine working-class boys from the American West, who formed a rowing crew at the University of Washington and went on to the 1936 Olympics.

Home Front by Kristin Hannah

This is a look at modern marriage and the exploration of the toll war takes on an ordinary American family. This is a story of love, loss, heroism, honor and, ultimately hope!

Thanks again for all the great donations and to all the hard working library volunteers! ...submitted by Gayle Smoley and Jeanne Woodward

COMMUNITY EDUCATION... Tai Chi for Lent

A year ago I decided to try something new, Tai Chi. According to the Harvard Women's

Health Watch, “Tai chi is often described as "meditation in motion," but it might well be

called "medication in motion." There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice, which

originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems.

And you can get started even if you aren't in top shape or the best of health.

I needed some medication for my life and God knows I was not in tip top shape. My friend, Perry Rollings

offered to teach Tai Chi for Community Education. I registered for the class. I enjoyed the series of motions

and every Thursday I felt better after class. It was relaxing, improved my balance and mood. Perry put together

a DVD of the motions so we could practice at home. This is where I failed miserably. I didn’t take the time to

practice at home and after the eight sessions were done I stopped Tai Chi.

F ast forward one year and Perry has returned to teaching Tai Chi,

this time at the Community Center. I signed up again and love it

every Tuesday night. According to our instructor we are showing

great promise, but once again I’m not practicing at home. So is it

wrong for a non-practicing Lutheran, Catholic dropout to practice a

Chinese Martial Art for Lent? I’m going to give it a try!

I t is said that it takes a village to raise a child. The Sartell Senior Connection

says it take a village to enliven the Senior Center and make it sing with the sounds of conversations, laughter, joy and growing friendships. Won’t you be an active member of our village???

R ecently we have started to staff the Community Center’s front desk for

two hours five mornings a week. We greet the people as they enter the building, answer questions, take messages but mostly just socialize. It has been fun for us and a great service to all who enter the building. We are looking for more volunteers who would like to be this special volunteer from 10-noon Monday- Friday. There will be orientation for you on your first time to ease you into your comfort zone.

If you are interested in more information or wanting to get on the schedule,

Sartell Community Center 3:00 pm Hacksaw Ridge The true story of Desmond Doss who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. He was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honor.

...HISTORY from pg. 3

Another piece of history that is noteworthy is the history of the school district. Are you aware of the struggle residents went through to be able to build the first high school? It involved huge conflicts with the State Department of Education, a vote in a blizzard, three law suits and more. You can see a video about it at: www.sartellmn.com. Scroll down to Sartell Stories in the left column and click on The School District.

When I was in high school I must have been a pain for my history teacher. I remember arguing with him on several occasions. I could see no sense in “learning about all those dead people”. I remember history as having to memorize lists of names, places and dates, truly not that interesting and with today’s technology at our fingertips anytime we need to know. It is the stories that are important; and the stories and memorabilia of former times that we need to collect and preserve. History helps us understand change and how the culture in which we live came to be. The past causes the present, and so the future.
