enjoy life!Valuable messages givenat the Quarterly Review

business news

The Silver Award winners definitely had something to celebrate in July this year with such great achievements. The management team and Silver

Award winners went to Orange Restaurant where the official hand over took place. According to Christo Willemse they enjoyed the evening thoroughly and thanked the management team for making them feel special.

Our last Quarterly Review for the year was greatly appreciated by all as the focus was to enjoy life and to take care of oneself. A few guests from

CANSA were invited to share their stories and knowledge.Nelspruit star, Henry John, ensured that everyone had a good time when he sang some golden oldies. As he is very involved with CANSA, he decided to write a song for CANSA, Journey of Hope, that was also performed on stage. Regional Manager for CANSA Lowveld, Maria Scoltz has a National Diploma in Clinical Technology (Cardiology) as well as a B Tech in Clinical Technologist Cardiology. She gave lovely feedback on the Sappi CANSA house and encouraged everyone to take part in the cobble stone donation project which is a great success thus far. Dr Magda Rall has her own practice while giving talks and information workshops on trauma in the crime environment and assists CANSA with their Suppor t Group once a month. She is also a representative on the Provincial Advisory Committee for NICRO and talks to employees about how to adjust their lives when a family member is diagnosed. The Quarterly Review was one to remember and our guest speakers and performers can be thanked for that.

business news

It has always been a top priority to recognise other people's efforts and commitment within Sappi and to reward them for it. As part of the Employee Value

Proposition (EVP) recognition fits in with the attribute, Opportunity. We should embrace opportunities to grow, learn and make a dif ference and it is symbolised by the arms. Sappi provides opportunities for all employees to develop, connect and deploy their talent and inspires people to acquire and share their knowledge on a life-long journey of learning. Sappi encourages innovation at every opportunity and celebrates success. This year, Ngodwana Mill handed out seven Bronze Awards at two Quarterly Reviews respectively. In July it was such a pleasure to hand over four Bronze Awards. These went to Fransie Botha, Frans Luies, Hubert du Preez and Karel van Staden for the great work they have

done. Recognised by their superiors, they each received a Bronze Award for the very successful holiday programme and upgrading of the Jabulani hall during the Soccer World Cup. Karel received an award for identifying the source of historical boiler contamination with acid and caustic. With our last Quarterly Review, Albert Olivier, Elizabeth Carelsen and Bronwyn Esterhuizen received Bronze Awards for their outstanding achievements.Albert not only found and negotiated a potential solution for Ngodwana Mill's coal supply; he also secured supply and cost savings for other mills. Through continuous dedication and effort, Elizabeth has assured that the Ngodwana EWB programme has reached set goals, has grown significantly and is in a position to deliver according to the strategic framework. Bronwyn has been actively involved in the Two Valleys Community Forum and runs projects on her own in her free time and during holidays to help the community where she can. Congratulations to each and everyone and may your recognition at the mill be taken further to Head Office for a Silver Award.

Ngodwana Mill had four garage meetings last month to launch the Employee Value Proposition (EVP); the “I choose Paper” Campaign and our

mill's vision. These two projects link up with the EVP and therefore it's appropriate to roll them out simultaneously. A total of almost 600 employees attended these meetings and were excited to learn more about the EVP. General Manager SW Engelbrecht, together with his management team, each presented an attribute of the EVP. They are responsible for the handouts at the gates and to help spread the word. Fun activities and competitions are what make the EVP so exciting.

employee valueproposition (evp)

Ask yourself the question: What is important to you? Relationships within the company, working for a sustainable company, being a high

performance business, having opportunities, scope for good leadership and being prosperous perhaps? Those are all the things that are represented in the “My Sappi” Figure that is displayed at the main gate. We should all embody these attributes in our daily activities to become “high performance people” in our organisation and if you are a high performance person, you are striving towards one of the six goals that were discussed in Project Siyaphambili last year. During the EVP campaign Ngodwana Mill's vision was also rolled out. According to General Manager SW Engelbrecht, if you want to become a high performance person who contributes to the sustainability and all the other attributes of this business, you should form part and relate with the mill's vision.“Not all employees are aware that we do have a vision, but by aligning the workforce we can achieve our goals or six objectives (Project Siyaphambili). During the alignment process, we change our behaviour and apply the vision to our jobs.”

Ngodwana Mill's vision states: “Create a sustainable future by being passionately engaged to deliver industr y solutions for our end users and par tners, by reaching our full potential as leaders, individuals and team players.”

“If you live our vision and you strive to achieve this, you will form part of “My Sappi” and the EVP, because that is what we stand for.”

gold for excellence in

logistics en years of teamwork and collaboration led to Sappi and logistics service provider, TGoldfields, winning a Gold Award at the

prestigious Logistics Achiever Award function held on 16 September 2010. The Logistics Achiever Awards recognises excellence in logistics and supply chain management, and encourages companies to improve on these practices.Judges considered aspects like leadership and innovation, strategy planning, customer satisfaction, operational improvements, the sustainability of these processes, and collaboration between the partners, sensitivity to the environment, the community impact and the overall business results. Sappi and Goldfields achieved strong scores on the above. Some successes achieved over the past three years include significantly improved delivery times, savings in distribution costs and the elimination of waste in the supply chain. “Winning this award is testimony to what can be achieved when business partners become one team, and commit to the same vision and mission to achieve success,” says Sappi Business Systems Manager: Core Koosh Panday.

Although you might think that we are at work and scot-free of the wild outdoors, think again.

Our very sneaky friend from nature, called the Mozambican spitting cobra, paid a visit to the Woodyard in the beginning of October. Although Woodyard employees were aware of his existence for quite some time, they just could not catch him, until the cobra became too familiar with his surroundings and showed up unannounced in the walkway. Ngodwana's very own snake catcher, Burger Loots*, came to the rescue and caught the snake while one of the Hydro Belting contractors pinned it to the ground with a stick. According to Burger the snake was 1,07m long and he struggled for four years before this day to catch it. “I caught a Mozambican spiting cobra at exactly the same spot last year and both were males. Employees saw a bigger snake of the same species there that might have been a female as they are bigger than males,” said Burger.

sssssssneaky...Apparently Burger and his team caught 60 snakes so far this year at Ngodwana, of which 28 were Mozambican spitting cobras, seven brown house snakes, six puff adders, four twig snakes, three spotted bush snakes, two black mambas, two Cape centipede eaters, t wo common slug eaters, a boomslang, a Cape wolf snake, a giant legless skink, a purple-glossed snake, a red-lipped herald and a southern African python. *André Botha is taking over as a snake catcher here at Ngodwana Mill. If you come across a snake, please phone André on: 083 5599 595.

forest fair revivedThe Forest Fair was revived in2009, and is one of its kindin South Africa.

Therefore, Sappi grabbed the opportunity to be one of the anchor sponsors, which provided industry players with a valuable networking opportunity,

and a chance to showcase itself.Sappi's exhibition focused on the Sappi Fibre Trail, and on how Sappi's fibre touches our lives every day. The exhibition was put together collectively by Sappi Limited, Ngodwana Mill, Sappi Forests, Lomati Sawmill and Sappi ReFibre and will be used in 2011 to promote Sappi in the Lowveld. The stall created an engaging and enjoyable opportunity for visitors to know more about Sappi's products and that Sappi touches their lives every day. There was a competition as well where 340 participants answered five questions, of which the answers were to be found in the stall on the panels that displayed facts about Sappi, and in Sappi's Fibre Trail newspaper that was developed for the exhibition. Interesting to know, is that Sappi plays a roll in the manufacturing of yoghurt as well, and therefore visitors each received complimentary fat-free yoghurt when visiting the stall.

The winner of the main prize was Sibuyisile Chiloane of Graskop, and she won a two-night stay for herself and a partner at Crystal Springs Mountain Resort.

innibosGreener by the Year

This year's Innibos was greener than ever with more than 100 Green Ambassadors that voluntarily took part in the Recycling programme run by Sappi.

This year Sappi had a few tattoo and recycling stations where the recycling logos were portrayed on tattoos.

They were also given recycling bags. More than one competition was held and people could win fantastic prizes. The Green Ambassadors had to place the tattoos on original places and people then had to take photos of them at the Sappi Tattoo photo booth. These were published in the Innibos newspaper, Muskiet, and other festivalgoers could vote for the best picture. The Recycling stations were a huge success and Regional Communications Manager, Elsabé Coetzee, was grateful for the excel lent par t ic ipat ion among the Ngodwana community.

Above: HR Business Par tner Patrick McCar thy, Training Of ficer Marius de Jager, with Bruce Mbele, Training Superintendent Therina van Zyl and Personnel Manager Elizabeth Carelsen.

Bruce Mbele was a Technician in Training for 18 months after he started working for Sappi in January 2009.

“I completed my P1 and P2 National Diploma in Chemical Engineering.” During this time Bruce was on a development plan to obtain all the plant operating licences at newsprint where he is working. His portfolio of evidence was moderated early in August 2010 whereafter he was declared fully competent in all operations. The significance of this achievement is that Bruce completed the full training programme which is supposed to stretch over two years within 18 months. This achievement justified him to be the first recipient of the Sappi SA Corporate Certificate. Therina van Zyl says Bruce has a high drive for potential fulfilment and wishes him a long and prosperous career at Ngodwana Mill. “Bruce is a true asset to the company,” she concludes.

9Conversation in Leadership commenced in

March this year and n i n e c e l l s ; 1 0 7 par ticipants, were identified to kick-off t h e s e e x c i t i n g conversations.

Ngodwana Mill has three 9C facilitators:• Fred Carelsen• Nic Dreyer • Bruce Clench.

We are still going strong and aim to finish our last conversation in November this year. Three cells have been completed already. Extremely positive feedback has been given and the results can be seen among the workforce. One of the facilitators, Bruce Clench states that there is a tremendous impact on leadership growth. “The second wave of the 9C's will commence in January 2011 where 13 cells will form the second wave,” he concludes.

T h e P e r s o n n e l a n d Communications 9C Cell, better known as the Girl Power team, decided to end their last 9C conversation with a bang to celebrate nine months of successful conversations in leadership. This time, they faced each other in a bowls match, joined by the three 9C facilitators Fred, Nic and Bruce. None of these girls had participated in a bowls showdown before, but Wally Duncan, a bowls guru, came to the rescue when he taught them a few tricks. It was a day to be remembered as they discovered some hidden talents within the team.

What is it with the firing and burning? We work for Sappi! I should get over this. Not that it is my weak point; I'm just taking the necessary precautions. a force to be reckoned withAlta van Graan makes Ngodwana proud

Manpower administrator Alta van Graan is like a jack in the box on the ringball court, especially if you take into account that she was rewarded

for 12 years' service at the Ngodwana Ringball Club. From 1999 up to 2001 she received trophies for the Most Versatile Player and she also received the trophy for Player of the Year from 1999 until 2004. This is just the beginning, in 2002, 2004 and 2005, 2007 to 2009, Alta was also chosen as the Sports Woman of the Year. “I really love the sport and being active. I played action cricket for the Free State for many years and also had colours in tennis and netball back in the day,” Alta says. She is also part of the Ringball Union and received honorary colours for 10-years' service from 2001 to 2010. To crown this, Alta was also the Lowveld Masters Woman

year at Nationals. “I was terrified to know that I could've done so well in the finals. But this motivated me more to improve in the races to come,” Jean-Pierre said.In 2010 he was given an opportunity to ride for local business, Rudamans Racing Team from Nelspruit, and he is also competing in their Enduro, the only race in Mpumalanga where he has to ride in the Senior class. He performed better than what was expected and lies fourth overall with one race left to compete in for the year. According to his dad, Frans Luies, Nelspruit PIT LANE also approached him for 2011 to take part in the AMSOIL and Enduroworld Enduros for next season and it will be his first season as a Senior where he will be competing against his heroes Jade Goodside, Lourens Mahoney and Darrel Curtis. “We are looking forward to his career as an off-road motorcyclist. Maybe he will go fully professional with his amazing talent,” Frans concluded.

Player of the Year 2009. “It is amazing to realise what you can achieve if you really put your mind to it,” Alta explains. “I received SA colours in Ringball for seven years and from 2007 t o 2 0 1 0 I r e c e i v e d captainship for women's masters and being a SA Ringball selector.”Alta makes Ngodwana proud wherever she plays and she is not planning to stop soon.

Many of you might have crossed roads with Jean-Pierre Luies, while he's crossed the racing tracks much more often.

In January 2009, he was approached by Suzuki South Africa to represent them at Junior National level for off-road motorcycling. Team members were selected from across South Africa, based on their performances in 2008. Jean-Pierre participated in competitions in Stanford in the Cape, Mafikeng, Lesotho, De Wetsdorp, Naboomspruit, Kimberly and Graytown in KZN where he moved up to 12th position overall, out of 47 participants in his class. For this avid competitor, the sky's the limit, and he practiced whole-heartedly for the last race of the season, until he had an unfortunate accident during a practice session a week before his crucial race. He broke his collar bone and ended up 24th out of the 47 participants for the year. Even so, it was still an exemplary result for the first

buckman supports local outreach programme

Elandshoek, situated just outside Ngodwana, is poverty stricken. It consists of 130 orphans and vulnerable chi ldren, who despite their

circumstances; face their daily challenges with determination, always remaining positive.A resident at Elandshoek, Freedom Ndou, voluntarily started a soccer team with the local youth A-team, consisting of 21 players. They are taught basic life skills, respect, discipline and of course, how to play soccer.

When Freedom approached Buckman to sponsor the soccer kits for the team, Buckman jumped at the opportunity to provide support for the youth, who, despite the lack of basic essentials, remain passionate about soccer and the improvement of their lifestyles.Buckman is proud to sponsor the Elandshoek outreach programme. Let's hope we see many young soccer stars in the future.
