My first fe months ith Sapa have beendominated by the fusion of Sapas andAlcoas aluminium profile operations. That

or is still in progress, and no ne challenges lieahead. One of them is the continuing commitment toour Genesis business system, hich is based on theToyota Production System.

Although most Sapa employees have receivedtraining in the system, e are still not quite heree ant to be. The goal is that Genesis should bea central element of all our operations and colourSapas corporate culture. The business system

should not just be regarded as a tool, but as acomplete solution for improving the efficiency ofour oring routines. By decentralising tass suchas planning, co-ordination and implementation,Genesis lays the foundation for a more efficient andlogical ay of oring that ill mae our organisa-tion better and more effective.

But the benefits of Genesis are not just limited toSapas on production chain. It is also about ma-ing improvements for our customers. A better andmore effective organisation leads to reduced costs, hich in turn creates benefits for Sapas customers. This is the goal of the or e call Customer ValueManagement.

Sapa faces other challenges hen it comesto the environment, health and safety. Our goal isclear: No employee should be injured at or. weare planning a series of measures to improve thesituation. we ill achieve our goal through regulartraining initiatives, specially appointed safety repre-sentatives at each plant and regular safety inspec-

tions. The safest oringmethods are also the mostefficient; Im convincedof that.

    BRIEF NOTICES

In the face of stiff competition, Sapa Building System in Germanyrecently on an order for 600 fireproof doors for a ne officebuilding in Munich.

The order is one of our biggest ever, says sales and maretingmanager Udo Bchel. It mars a breathrough for Sapa into the

German maret for fireproofproducts, hich has gronrapidly since the fire at

Dsseldorf Airport in2004. Since then agroing number of pub-lic buildings have beendesigned ith fireproofpartitions, and emer-gency exit routes havebeen improved.

    Sapa has been offer-

ing fireproof productssince 2005. They are

thoroughly tested and able tomeet very strict requirements.

The Secur II door is madefrom 75-millimetre anodised or

painted aluminium profiles and732 mill imetre-thic glass. It has

no filling, but can still resist extreme-ly high temperatures exceeding

    800 C for around 30 minutes.

    Fireproof breakthrough

Prismaflex in Staffanstorp maes billboards for outdoor advertising, and Sapamaes the profiles for these billboards, hich can be seen all over the orld in avariety of designs and sizes.

Together, the to companies have no developed an entirely ne illuminatedframe or haloframe in record time.

we ere given the tas by JC Decaux at the end of June, explains AndersJanson, product developer at Prismaflex. we ored ith Sapa all through thesummer to get everything finished by the start of October, hen eleven big bill-boards in London ere fitted ith haloframes. The billboards have internal light-ing, and these frames enhance the impact by matching the lighting to the colourof the image; you can add blue lighting to a blue image and so on.

Sapa created four totally ne profiles for the billboards, hich measure10 x 5 metres. The hole project too just 10 ees from start to finish, despitethe summer holidays.

It as a really enjoyable job, and a challenge to get everything done in such ashort time. we ould never have managed it ithout Sapa and JC Decaux, saysAnders Janson.

Emhart Glass in Sundsvall is a multi-national company that develops andmanufactures machines for maingglass, and is the only company of its

type in Seden. This advanced machinery is designed

to run 24 hours a day in full production, and a single machine can produceseveral hundred bottles per minute. Tomeet these demands, every componentof the machine has to satisfy exception-ally high standards of quality.

An extruded hollo aluminium profileis used to build the conveyor that carriesbottles from the machine. Cooling airand compressed air for the valves arefed through the hollo profile.

This eliminates a great deal of or

in manufacturing, such as piping andelding. And of course the neaterfinish is an added bonus, says RuneBergman from Emhart Glass.

Almost the entire output of thecompanys glass pacaging machinesis exported. The machines are built inSundsvall and tailored to the custom-ers needs. The components of themachines are manufactured in rebroor sourced from a variety of suppliers, ofhich Sapa is one.

Sapa are good at meeting ourneeds and ishes. we have a goodpartnership hen it comes to producingaluminium profiles that are optimised tosuit our customers requirements, saysRune Bergman.

If all the police cars in Seden sitched to our green blue emergencylights it ould cut fuel costs by up to EUR 2 million each year, says Anders

wiqvist, CEO of Standby AB, hich manufactures alarm and arningequipment for emergency vehicles and oring vehicles.

The secret behind the saving lies in aerodynamics and ne technology. The lo-energy emergency lights ith six specially made aluminium

profiles from Sapa, light fittings and plastic covers have been redesignedith a ne aerodynamic shape. Compared to previous models, the airresistance is reduced by a full 75 per cent.

The light units have been tested in a ind tunnel in Stuttgart, sotheir performance has been verified. The reduced air resistance is goodfor the environment and gives loer fuel consumption, as ell as lessnoise inside the car. The standard bulbs have been replaced ith lo-energy LEDs.

The LEDs are mounted on an aluminium substrate. This is ne

technology that e are the first to use, andit carries aay surplus heat so that the LEDs

can be poered to produce more light, saysAnders wiqvist.

we ill be doing climate testing this inter andexpect to start supplying the ne emergencylights in spring 2008.

Fire can often spread rapidly on a bus, and thereis little time to escape. Under Sedish fire regu-lations all buses eighing over 10 tonnes musttherefore be fitted ith a permanent extinguisher.

A fe years ago the Sedish company DafoBrand developed an aluminium fire extinguishercontainer for heavy vehicles such as buses, trucs and forestry machines, in collaborationith Sapa.

In contrast to normal handheld fire extinguish-ers, the container, hich is filled ith a liquidextinguisher medium, can be laid flat. It taes uplittle space and is easy to service and install. Thelarge aluminium profile for the container ascomplex and has to meet strict dimensionalrequirements.

Sapa contacted us and said they ould lieto develop it, says kaj Dahlstrm, technicaldesigner ith Dafo Brand. we ored very elltogether and it has resulted in a simpler internalprofile and an outer profile that just clips in place.

    Eliminatingbus fires

To reduce noise levels along motorays the Danish

company Mileide maes acoustic screens fromaluminium and acrylic glass, a combination that isboth effective and good-looing.

The screens are assembled on site, and theoriginal version consisted of several aluminiumprofiles that ere joined using numerous bolts. Thisas time-consuming and expensive, so a year agoMileide and Sapa began a development project.

weve no found a solution that everyone ishappy ith, says Gustav Lundvist, an engineer

ith Sapa. It consists of one large and one small

profile that are clipped together. No special toolsare needed for assembly, just a standard rubbermallet.

The customer saves the cost of drilling andthreading, assembly is much quicer and the install-ers get a better oring environment.

The ne design as used for the first time alonga motoray in Herning. Over a 600-metre stretch iteliminated 20,000 bolts. Thats a really big improve-ment, says Ole Refshauge from Mileide.

The aluminium substrate is a type of circuit board

that uses an aluminium sheet with several layers of

insulation and conducting tracks for electronics.

The most important application for solarenergy is electricity generation. when silicon

is exposed to light it reacts by generating a cur-rent. A single photocell produces a relatively lovoltage, so solar cells are usually lined in series tocreate larger solar panels.

The efficiency of solar panels is still relativelylo at around 20 per cent. This means that a

great deal of sunlight is required to produce largeamounts of energy. One ay of increasing energyproduction is to mount the solar panels on a mov-ing structure that can trac the suns movementacross the sy, maximising electricity production.

    BRIEF NOTICES

Aluminium scaffoldgains groundBecause eight is an important factor hen erecting scaf-folding, more and more customers are choosing lighteightaluminium scaffolding, reports wilhelm Layher, a Germancompany that is Europes leading manufacturer of scaffold-ing systems. The companys product range includes the traditional, mod-ular scaffolding that is versatile and quic to erect, framescaffolding for fast and easy facade erection, as ell as lad-ders, mobile scaffolding, stages and platforms.wilhelm Layher aims to mae scaffolding components thatare as light as possible ithout compromising on stability. For many years the company has therefore used aluminiumprofiles from Sapa, hich are pressed, cut, punched, rivetedand elded at its plant in Eibensbach.

    Enjying the spaexperience at hme

10,000times cleaner airDemand for mobile smoing cubicles is groing rapidlyas smoing restrictions are introduced around the orld. The cubicles capture tobacco smoe effectively and mean thatsmoers are no longer banished to dreary smoing rooms.

The smoing cubicles made by Sedish company Smoe

Free Systems have frames built from aluminium profiles. Variousfilters in the alls remove particles and gases from the air, ma-ing it 10,000 times cleaner than air elsehere in the room.

A ne series of cubicles has no been developed for theFrench maret, in partnership ith Sapa.

we recommend open or semi-open cubicles, but underFrench la they have to be closed. No that our ne mod-els the SF 6000 and smaller SF 4000 are complete,e can see that theyve made a big difference, says BoDol-Petersson, project manager at Smoe Free Systems.

Sapa as closely involved in the development or,hich too very little time. The SF 6000 ent from setchto prototype in just four months and is no being manufac-tured by Sapa.

This demonstrates Sapas strength. You can get alu-minium profiles anyhere, but not in combination ith devel-opment, prototype building, specification and consultancy, says Bo Dol-Petersson.

The ne Felicity steam shoer from sauna man-ufacturer Tyl gives consumers the chance toenjoy the spa experience at home. The shoeris the result of close collaboration on develop-ment beteen Tyl and Sapa.

Felicity taes up no more space than a sho-er enclosure and comes in three versions. Eachhas a steam generator, thermostatic mixer, handshoer, ceiling ith shoer head, control panel, seat and shoer tray.

The more exclusive models feature massagenozzles, rain function, built-in lighting and cascade.

The supporting structure is made from anodisedaluminium ith alls and doors of toughened safetyglass. Plumbing and electronics are concealed behindthe aluminium profiles. The design places very strictdemands on dimensional tolerances and finish. Sapahas ored closely ith Tyl for many years andPatri karlsson from Technical Service as involvedthroughout the development process.

we ere able to bounce ideas off each otherand our partnership ored ell financially, as ellas speeding up the project, says Jan Bjrnhag, product manager for Tyl.
