SAP HANA Adopting or improving an enterprise system should always be, first and foremost, a business- driven decision. In today’s market, businesses are looking for ways to differentiate and compete with faster results, greater innovation and by driving more and deeper insights from their data. They want to be able to make information available everywhere, all the time and for any one that needs it. Data and information has to flow at as close to real time as possible in order to make decisions fast, react to new developments with the right offers and ensure opportunities can be met with the right response, all of the time. So how can organizations acquire those capabilities?

The incredible technological innovation taking place in areas such as mobility and cloud computing and new devices entering the enterprise provide some of the answers. One area that arguably creates fewer headlines is ERP. But that could be about to change, as SAP HANA makes its presence felt. SAP HANA’s ability to unlock insights like never before, accelerate value and handle massive volumes of data across an enterprise is poised to grab significant attention and make a few headlines in its own right.

That’s because SAP HANA is more than a technology evolution- it has the potential to revolutionize the way that businesses are run. SAP HANA started as a way to achieve faster analytics with in-memory computing. It’s now driving towards enabling the real time enterprise. And as one of SAP’s leading partners, Accenture’s work with HANA has been developing just as fast. Accenture believes SAP HANA is a major opportunity for its clients. Here’s why.

SAP HANA offers a multitude of business benefits. Need to allocate stock according to value and profitability? Use real time analytics for operations on HANA. Need to speed up financial close from days to hours? Done. Want to see how social media sentiments are trending in real time? Use HANA’s in-memory analytics to extract the insights and spot changes as they happen. These are just a few examples of how SAP HANA is changing the face of enterprise computing.

In short, HANA is a game changer. It has the potential to dramatically change and improve all critical enterprise functions from logistics and customer service through to marketing and finance. It enables businesses to run in real time, providing the ability to transact, analyze and predict instantly and proactively in an increasingly unpredictable world.

Market set for lift offThe transformational nature of SAP HANA has been picked up quickly by market commentators and analysts. For example, earlier this year, when SAP announced the availability of SAP Business Suite powered by HANA the market reacted very positively. As SAP’s leading alliance partner and the first systems integrator to invest in HANA, Accenture is making a significant commitment to the platform. We are making substantial investments in the resources and expertise that are required to support the platform. That includes creating an internal organization fully dedicated to HANA that will number thousands of employees exclusively focused on HANA, investments in a Development Factory for SAP BW on HANA, 12 dedicated SAP Accenture Innovation Centers around the world, a HANA Business Case development methodology and the creation of 14 industry-specific ‘day in the life’ scenarios to showcase the power of the SAP HANA platform at work in a real business context.

SAP HANA in actionAccenture is already working with clients on a wide variety of HANA engagements, in industries as diverse as utilities, telecoms, consumer goods, financial services and pharma. We are demonstrating the differentiating power of HANA across areas including supply chain, HR, marketing, retail analytics, telematics, smart metering, insurance claims, public service, CRM and energy production.

Accenture’s clients are already starting to see significant business benefits from SAP HANA. Some examples include:

A leading aerospace business was focused on improving complex manufacturing with real time production information. They wanted to improve their manufacturing processes by increasing the visibility of information relating to production operations.

The highly complex nature of aerospace manufacturing requires many metrics to be constantly calculated. SAP HANA enabled the company to create assembly dashboards to provide a near real-time view of production processes on the shop floor. These provide faster and more accurate status reports for production managers and mechanics, enabling them to optimize capacity planning and make fully-informed decisions that maximize the efficiency of manufacturing schedules and assembly operations. With all the metrics available in one place and in near real-time, the company has achieved considerable business benefits. These include improved working capital through lower work-in process inventory, reduced labor costs through more accurate provisioning and lower requirement for over time and higher manufacturing throughput by reducing cycle times, potentially leading to higher revenues.

More efficient, effective and faster financial close

A leading global telecoms business, achieved the largest IT transformation in its history. IT brought together a number of different operating businesses onto a single SAP platform for HR, finance and supply chain, creating consistently high standards of business processes and reporting. The company wanted to accelerate its financial month end close and improve the speed and accuracy of financial reporting. By deploying SAP HANA on top of their existing SAP ERP it has achieved far higher efficiency and effectiveness across its processes. With data transfer times now 9000 times at the rate of the previous system, financial close can be achieved a whole day earlier than before. By shortening the cycle time and increasing automation, decisions can be made earlier in the monthly cycle and business resources are freed up to work on more value adding activities.

The different paths to HANA Organizations are taking different routes to implementation and driving business value from HANA. These range from the tactical, addressing a single business process in order to understand HANA’s potential at relatively low risk, through to a full-scale transformation of end-to-end ERP systems on the HANA platform. The ability to tailor HANA to meet a specific business goal, or to introduce its powerful capabilities to accelerate and improve a single business process means that organizations are able to adapt their own approach according to their precise needs. There is no single right or wrong path to HANA adoption. It’s possible to drive several initiatives with specific business goals at the same time.

Accenture’s approach is flexible. We are working with clients on three main approaches. The first, HANA Business Applications (HBA) brings together Accenture’s assets implemented on SAP HANA technology to address a specific business challenge. Packaged as a complete solution, i.e. hardware, software and services, HBA can be offered on premises or as a cloud-based solution. HBA offers a solution to a specific business need, and each is created for a specific industry. Leveraging insights from the HANA Research Council, HBA offers a low-risk implementation that enables organizations to gauge the power of HANA to achieve a specific business goal.

Our second approach, HANA Business aXeleration (HBX) makes use of the HANA architecture to accelerate the performance of one or more business processes. These are run in a separate system, offering an opportunity to harness the advantage of HANA without requiring fundamental change to existing systems. This can act as a means to build the business case for a wider implementation, at minimal risk.

HANA Business Transformation (HBT) is the third approach. It’s a full-scale move to Business Suite on HANA technology. It involves a complete application and technology refresh and transformation of existing business processes.

It provides the opportunity to consolidate and renovate existing SAP implementations offering the power of the platform broadly across the whole enterprise. In addition, Accenture has developed industry specific templates (Accenture Advanced Enterprise Systems) that can drive even higher performance in specific industry contexts. It is the most ambitious approach but as SAP continues to invest in HANA, it will become the future platform for the entire SAP business suite. But as awareness of HANA develops over time, it will generate the most traction and highest levels of adoption.

HANA is the way of the future for SAP. But the future is happening now. Organizations are beginning to explore how they can implement HANA and drive value across their organization. Accenture sees a distinct adoption curve developing (see figure below). Initially we expect to see businesses making select use of HANA to improve one or more distinct business processes (HBX).

As the benefits of those implementations become increasingly apparent, we envision a broader move to more transformational adoption (HBT), with HANA driving end-to-end business processes and delivering high performance across enterprise functions. In parallel with this, we would also expect to see the use of HANA deployed as a discrete managed service (HBA), addressing particular business challenges designed expressly for specific industry contexts.
