Nature is a key attraction. Hainan has nearly 400 types of tropical plants and around 100 different animal species. Natural havens near Sanya include Nanwan Monkey Island, a protected area for monkeys that covers 2,471 acres. It lies in Haitang Bay, where the butterfly-shaped Wuzhizhou Island offers superb swimming, snorkelling and diving. The azure-blue South China Sea surrounding the island is rich in corals, with more than 260 varieties creating an underwater wonderland in clear water giving 25-30 metres visibility.

A notable attraction is the Sanya Nanshan Buddhism Cultural Tourism Zone, 40km west of Sanya, with its towering Guanyin Buddha statue standing 108 metres high on a man-made island, and the Nanshan Temple complex. Also at Nanshan is scenic Taoist site Dongtian Park. Close to Sanya is Tianya Haijiao – the End of the Earth – which is a scenic and romantic beauty spot that is the most southerly part of Hainan Island and China’s southernmost point.

Hainan Island is also called “Coconut Island” for the many coconut trees that grow on it and its coconut production. Sanya’s annual Coconut Festival features coconut lanterns, dragon boat races and a folk martial art competition.

Dragon Valley Golf Course

A masterpiece by US design corporation Schmidt-Curley, following their work at Mission Hills Haikou, Dragon Valley Golf Course was developed by Hainan Zhongdu Industrial Development Co and constructed by Shenzhen Forward Golf Management Corporation. It is run by American company Flagstick Golf Management Corporation.

The course is located in Nandingzhong Village, only 10 minutes’ drive from Sanya Railway Station and a 20-minute drive from Yalong Bay and Sanya’s Phoenix Airport.

The golf course covers an area of 215 acres, is 7,276 yards long and has a par of 75. A19-hole mountain golf course, there are no blind shots while the length of the holes, undulating fairways and variations in the sizes of the putting greens make a game here both challenging and enjoyable.

Haiken Qixianling International Golf Club

Created by American golf course design company JFO, this international-standard 18-hole mountan golf course is situated in the renowned Hainan Qixianling hot springs holiday resort. The golf course was designed to bring together the natural elements of hot springs, wild streams, tropical forests and mountainous landscapes to give golfers an unforgettable and enjoyable golf experience.

It is also an ideal place to mix social, recreational and business activities.

The Haiken Qixianling International Golf Club course is 7,061 yards long.

Hainan Clearwater Bay Golf Club

Another Schmidt-Curley Design course, Hainan Clearwater Bay Golf Club’s first course, the South Course, spans an area of 1,291 acres and has a total length of 7,333 yards, with artificial lakes covering 71,982 square metres.

This is a typical coastal golf course, with a strong Scottish links charm. Fairways are delicately shaped and seemingly flat but contain hidden undulations, which makes it both challenging and entertaining for different levels of golfers. The geographical location of the course is richly endowed by nature, offering plenty of sunshine, blue sea, fresh air, a pleasant climate, beautiful landscape and an open aspect. Coupled with the long beach alongside, it makes a spectacular and challenging international seaside course that mirrors nature’s wonders.

Hainan Kangle Garden Golf Club

Constructed by the Hainan Airline Group, Hainan Kangle Garden Golf Club officially opened in 1999. It has three 18-hole championship golf courses, two mini-clubhouses and one central clubhouse, as well as a five-star resort with 800 rooms, comprising a total investment of more than one billion yuan (about US $165 million).

The resort also has hot springs and is set in tropical rainforest, giving guests the enjoyment of being in a large hot springs and golf leisure vacation paradise.

Hainan Qixianling Golf & Spa

Located in the celebrated Qixianling Spring Resort, south of the Wuzhishan Cordillera and in the middle of Hainan Island, Hainan Qixianling Golf & Spa is very convenient at only 55 kilometres from Sanya. The golf course is laid out next to the Qixianling National Forest Park, and offers golfers fresh air and a warm climate.

The international-standard golf course is American-designed and has 18 holes, with a par of 72. This layout follows the original contours of the landscape, winding through a plantation of rubber trees, beautiful lakes and streams, steep hills and cloud-swathed mountains, and presenting amazing sceneries to golfers. The course measures 7,151 yards and covers an area of 245 acres.

The highest drop is over 50 metres, creating an exciting challenge. The Seashore Paspalum grass used on the course is green and thick all year round and also provides a fabulous touch on the greens. With 12 crystal-clear lakes and 59 silvery bunkers as well as some greens surrounded by water, the course is fun for golfers of all skill levels but also rewards skill.

Hongtang Bay International Golf Club

With a convenient location close to Sanya City between Tianya Haijiao and Nanshan Temple, Hongtang Bay Internatioal Golf Club is about 30 minutes’ drive from downtown Sanya and just 10 minutes’ drive from Sanya Phoenix Airport. The 7,196-yard-long golf course is an international-standard 18-hole par 72 stadium course which combines the natural elements of the seaside, lakes and mountains.

The Scottish-style seashore golf course was designed by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. The northern part is dominated by mountain scenery, overlooking a mountain range, while the southern part faces the sea. Set on a 4.5km-long coastline with riffling sea breezes, it is the only links-style golf course in Sanya giving panoramic sea views.

Using the ecological environment as the theme, the masterly design uses Hawaiian grass and has fairways that look flat but hide deep troughs, with fast and smooth Bermuda putting greens. A challenge that incorporates traditional links features, it can be enjoyed by golfers with different levels of ability.

Mystic Springs Golf Club

The Shen Quan Group has invested a total of about 200 million yuan (about US $33 million) into creating two PGA championship-standard mountain terrain golf courses and a leisure resort, ideally located near China’s only tropical seaside resort city – Sanya. The Mystic Springs Golf Club is also situated alongside the famous Nantian Hot Springs, known as “Shenzhou No.1 Hot Springs”, and a five-star hotel is part of the integrated mega-project.

Designed by world-renowned golf architecture firm Nelson & Haworth, the 36-hole golf facility spans 370 acres and is divided into two 18-holes courses

– the Mystic and Springs Courses – with lengths of 7,175 yards and 7,442 yards respectively.

Sanya Forest Valley Golf Club

An exclusive golf club combining tropical rainforest ecology, forest, mountains and sea views, Sanya Forest Valley Golf Club is a holiday-oriented golf club with a core value based on providing a healthy lifestyle. It’s philosophy is to provide golfers with a private natural space, integrating golf, health care, holiday and recreation.

Sanya Forest Valley Golf Club is an international-standard golf club with an 18-hole, par 72 mountain golf course. The course covers an area of over almost 500 acres and is 6,903 yards long from the gold tees. The highest fairway drop is over 50 metres and there are 87 bunkers. Sanya Luhuitou Golf Club

With investment by Shanghai Mingshen Group, Sanya Luhuitou Golf Club was designed by Nelson & Haworth, and was built and is maintained according to PGA standards. Measuring 7,310 yards, it offers 18 holes facing the spectacular South China Sea and a floodlit driving range with 40 double-storey bays as well as an on-site luxury seaside hotel. Sun Valley Sanya Golf Resort

Yalong Bay Golf Club

American master-designer Robert Trent Jones Jr said his concept for the initial 18 holes at Yalong Bay Golf Club was to create a links-land championship resort course.

The 7,189 yard, 18-hole design (nine with lights) covers an area of 120,000 square metres. It is dotted with 98 fearsome bunkers and streaked with a winding river. Each fairway has five tee boxes and with its large stretches of grass, the course, shaped like a dragon’s claw, is hemmed in by adjacent green hills and the beautiful Yalong Bay, all combining to form a beautiful landscape.

Shuang Sheng Shan Golf Course

The club is located about 40 minutes from Sanya Phoenix lnternational Airport and 60 minutes from Sanya’s railway station at the End of the Earth – near the Nanshan Buddhist Temple.

A challenging yet entertaining 18-hole, par 71 course, it has a total length of 6,516 yards over undulating terrain. Shang Sheng Shan Golf Course nestles halfway up a mountain amidst natural vegetation and attractive scenery. Luhuitou PeninsulaJutting out into the South China Sea a few kilometres south of Sanya, and flanked by Sanya Bay on one side and quieter sandy beach of Dadonghai Bay on the other, the hilly Luhuitou Peninsula is steeped in folklore and romance.

The hill which is the highest point of the peninsula, at around 280 metres high, forms the focal point of the lush Luhuitou Park and gives glorious views of both sunrise and sunset as well as offering spectacular vistas of Sanya City. It is said to resemble a deer looking back, a literal translation of the peninsula’s name that alludes to a Li Minority legend about a deer that lures a hunter there then turns into a beautiful girl, and they fall in love.

An imposing granite statue of the deer and hunter stands at the top of the hill, which is awash with the red flowers of the triangle plum – the official flower of Sanya and a type of bougainvillea. The park is a favourite place for lovers to visit, who tie ribbons to branches of an old tree on the hill.

Yalong BayA sweeping 7km crescent of pristine, white-sand beach cupped by forested mountains and caressed by the crystal-clear waters of the South China Sea, Yalong Bay is one of the natural treasures of the Sanya area and one of its main holiday spots.

Haitang BayChina’s new luxury resort destination, Haitang Bay is a 20-kilometre-long curve of beautiful beaches 28km from Sanya City and 40km from its international airport that has been developed for tourism since 2007 and is planned to eventually have 40 resorts. It encompasses white sands edged by swaying coconut palms and lapped by the azure-blue South China Sea as well as tropical islands, inland lagoons and wetlands, all rich in nature.

Just south of Haitang Bay, Nantian Hot Spring is one of China’s top hot springs and comprises 67 pools of different sizes including some with waterfalls. The water has an average temperature of 57.6ºC and a high mineral content, which is said to have curative effects and be good for relaxing and soothing both mind and body.

Wuzhizhou Island is a natural tropical haven resplendent with forest and exotic plants. Clearwater Bay & Shenzhou PeninsulaBoasting 12 kilometres of beautiful coastline, Clearwater Bay is regarded as one of just a few “singing beaches” in the world, where walking on the sand produces a singing sound. The bay is the latest high-end tourism development area on Hainan, with half a dozen five-star resorts planned as part of a project that also includes condominiums, villas, golf courses, marinas, a shopping centre and restaurants.

The bay is situated about 35km away from downtown Sanya and 45km from its international airport. Its gently-sloping sands, regarded by some as the best on Hainan, make it safe for swimming, while the clarity of the water is reflected in its name.

Shenzhou Peninsula, on Hainan’s east coast, is around 110km from Sanya in Wanning and has resort hotels and a Tom Weiskopf-designed golf course. Raffles Hainan

Opened in September 2013, Raffles Hainan is the 10th property in the Raffles Hotels & Resorts portfolio and its second in China. The luxury resort is set in Clearwater Bay, the new holiday hotspot on the south-east coast of Hainan Island.
