Chaplain’s Message Worthy Grand Knight

Pete Escanlar and my

fellow Knights:

Pope Bene-

dict XVI has declared

that the year beginning

on June 19, 2009 and

ending on June 19,

2010 will be “The

Year For Priests”.

Supreme Knight Carl

Anderson has called on all Knights world

wide to actively participate in “The Year

For Priests”.

As I read these declarations I

couldn’t help but think that for members

of the Santo Nino Council every year has

been “The Year For Priests”. My parents

had both migrated to Canada from Ireland

and were married here in Regina after the

First World War. They both brought with

them a tremendous love and respect for

priests. As a family we always felt that it

was a great honour to have a priest in our

home. Since the formation of the Santo

Nino Council I have felt that the members

of our Council have the same love and

respect for priests as my mother and my

father had.

Speaking personally I always feel

so terribly unworthy when members of the

Filipino Community kiss my hands. How-

ever I am fully aware that the gesture is

because priests acting on behalf of Christ,

the Great High Priest, hold the Body and

Blood of Our Lord in their Consecrated

hands at the consecration of the mass.

I feel terribly unworthy to be a

priest. However as your Chaplain I will

continue to strive to represent our Lord as

worthily as I possibly can.

On July 25 and 26 the Knights of Columbus Santo Nino Council held

its annual Invitational Doubles Tournament at the Lakeshore Tennis Club

(LTC). It was a great success with the championship match going right

down to the wire. Congratulations to Valerie Hagen (LTC) and Bro. Rey

Dimaano who prevailed in a very tough match against Nadine Albretch

(LTC) and Henry Ganitnit 6-2, 4-6 and 11-9 in a third set tie breaker game.

The consolation final was won by Ro Euroba (LTC) and Ben Hernando

who defeated father/daughter team of Butch and Jennifer Albretch (LTC).

The ladies singles division was a round robin affair with Anja Ruzic taking

home first place. Tamara Ruzic placed second.

Congratulations to all 28 participants of the tournament. Everyone

exemplified the true essence of this tournament: sportsmanship. Thanks to

Lakeshore Tennis Club for welcoming and offering the facilities to the KofC

community. And a big thank-you and high five to Lorie Parley who ran

and coordinated the ladies singles draw and Gina Escanlar, Bros. Jim Al-

varez and Gerry Abao who ran the main doubles division.

The weekend tournament was wrapped up by great weather and a fun

barbeque by the Knights for all tournament players and families.

Buffalo Day Float Placed Second

Last August, the Knights of Colum-

bus once again participated in the 2009 Buf-

falo Days Parade and won second place in the

service organizations category. That was not

bad considering that the expenses to freshen

up and improve the looks of the last year’s

winning float, the Santa Maria was just over

$300.00 (almost $700 below budget).

Special thanks to members of the

Santo Nino Council who came to help with

the preparation and/or dismantling of the float

after the parade: Gerry Abao, Jim Johnson,

Art Vanderzalm, Rio Mercado, Rey Dimaano,

Ron and Ed Alvaro, and Efren Alejandria.

Volunteers from other councils included

Gerry Siedle, Darren Hehn, Murray Campbell,

Brian Schiatz, Nick Dobrowski, Tony Gartner,

and Wayne Rutten.

Editorial (continued):

We are therefore obligated to pay

our dues annually. Non-payment invariably

exacts a heavy toll on the council. To re-

duce this burden, Council needs to suspend

members who have not paid their dues for

the last three or more years and have no

plans to update their accounts. Council is

reluctant to do this as retention of members

is far more edifying. Council has decided to

approach members who are in arrears, talk

to them and give them a grace period to

settle accounts.

We hope you understand the pre-

dicament Council is in. Praise the Lord if

you stay on, be active and be part of the

solution to a nagging problem.

Message from our Grand Knight

Brother Knights,

When the Santo Nino Council was

being formed 10 years ago, I was invited to be-

come a member. At the time, I felt I was too busy

with my work to take on additional activities.

Looking back, it was a rather selfish

attitude. I have since realized that helping others

is not about our ability to help or having time to

help but more about our willingness to help.

Hence, I am humbled and, at the same time, honored to be given your

trust and elected as your Grand Knight for the Columbian Year 2009-

2010. With the help of my brother Knights, I will do my best to be

worthy of your trust.

For July, we had a very successful Canada Day Mass and

Pancake Brunch at the Blessed Sacrament Church. That was fol-

lowed by our Tennis Tournament at the Lakeshore Tennis Club. Au-

gust saw another popular Buffalo Days Parade wherein our Knights

of Columbus Float won Second Place in the Service Club Category.

I would like to thank the following for making the Canada

Day event a success: all the Knights and their spouses and children

who did various duties like buying groceries, food preparation and

serving, providing music and entertainment, face painting, and enter-

taining our guests during the Mass and Brunch; Father Morrissey for

providing for the popsicles; the 4th Degree Assemblies for taking part

in the Mass; the 734 Communication Squadron for lendding the tents;

and Culligan Water for donating water and use of the cooler.

Thank you to my Brother Knights who helped in setting up

the K of C Float and in dismantling after the parade. Special thanks to

Premay Equipment for use of facility and semi-trailer for the float.

Of course I would be remiss if I fail to acknowledge the

tremendous support of my wife, Anabellee. She is always there to

give encouragement when I need it. Salamat gid ‘Ga.

Pete Escanlar

The Special Olympic Summer Games on June 19 to

21, 2009, hosted by the K of C Regina Chapter was a big

success with 343 athletes/coaches participating. There were

about 300 volunteers who had the experience of a unique

sporting event with the feeling of service, pride and fulfill-

ment. They gave their time and talents to those who showed

their athletic abilities and proved that they too are an integral

part of our community.

Council looked after the breakfasts and lunches of all

participating athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers at the

four event venues namely: Douglas Park, University of Re-

gina, Lawson Sportsplex and Glencairn Bowling Lane.

Also on each venue, Council provided health ser-

vices organized by RN Anne Dimaano, the better half of Bro.

Rey. Nurses and retired doctors were deployed by Anne as a

response team. Nurses also stayed overnight at the athletes’

residence at U of R to give medical services when required.

Heartfelt thanks are due all the volunteers

from Santo Nino Council, their family and the Filipino

nurses. Likewise the Steering Commitee of the Games ex-

tends its appreciation of the volunteers’ valuable time. The

committee surpassed its target funds thanks for the support of

various Councils, the K of C Dream Lottery, Conexus and

Sasktel Pioneers plus business and service sectors.

Good day Brothers,

I extend my gratitude on being appointed as your new Dis-

trict Deputy for the 2009-2010 year. I will have big shoes to fill, tak-

ing over for Reuben as he was a mentor and a good friend.

The message we received from the State Deputy this year at

the annual organization meeting was that we need to focus on 3

themes - Communication, Education and Visibility.

Issues like Pro-Life, the legalization of euthanasia, and the

use of stem cell research are just a few that our society is facing to-

day. Much needed communication, visibility and education must be

provided to our communities in order to create movements that will

direct our leaders to take the 'morally sound' actions required. The

State Deputy has suggested that each council appoint a "Respect for

Life Director" this year so that these issues can be managed and com-

municated to the people in your parishes and communities.

"Your life will be no better than the plans you make and the

action you take. You are the architect and builder of your own life,

fortune and destiny." Alfred A Montapert

I look forward to meeting and working with you in the up-

coming year.

Thanks and Vivat Jesus.

Darren Hehn

Message from our District Deputy

Pete Escanlar

Editorial: A Nagging Problem

Membership in any organization is a matter of commit-

ment not only of one’s aspirations and ideals but also of one’s

wherewithal and financial support. One joins the Knights of Co-

lumbus for reasons including a desire to serve God, our community

and our family. Another is to have camaraderie and fellowship

with people sharing common interests.

Since its charter, our Council has kept a program of activi-

ties that caters to our intentions. We have been active in Mass

celebrations. We have been involved in charitable activities such

as caroling at care homes, Christmas Kettle drive, Shamrock drive,

charity appeals, pancake breakfasts, etc. We have family picnics,

tennis tourneys, Easter egg hunts for kids that keep the family to-

gether. We receive certain benefits such as the Columbia monthly

and other publications including this newsletter. We also have life

insurance available only to members.

Our membership dues go towards funding these activities.
