On March 16, Santa Fe Public Library closed its buildings to the public due to the COVID-19 health emergency. Many familiar things in our lives changed. The dedicated library staff at SFPL began to work from home to make as many library services available as possible for all ages and to ensure that we would have an online summer reading program for Santa Fe in 2020. Although the program will look a little different than past years, the goals remain the same–make reading fun and support learning over the summer. We have taken a collaborative approach and are working with other City departments and community entities to provide resources throughout the summer.

Research shows that on average, students can lose a month of academic learning during the summer. The loss of math skills is also an issue for many kids. In response, SFPL is partnering with Math Amigos to create our first summer math component this year. It is important for kids to see adults reading and to have programs for all ages. We have included teens and adults in our re-imagined summer reading program this year. Our goal this summer is to provide parents and caregivers with tools to make learning fun. Kids, teens and adults can earn prizes as part of the program. We hope to have more participation than ever this year as we navigate this difficult time. If you need help signing up for the Summer Reading Program, please call us! We are excited to help you log the amount of time you spend reading over the phone or provide a paper log. SFPL will provide virtual programs each week, craft-to-go-kits and prizes for reading and doing activities this summer. Please join us this summer to “Imagine Your Virtual Story” and fill your summer with reading magic.

Thank you,Maria Sanchez-Tucker, Library Director and SFPL Staff

2020 City of Santa Fe Summer Youth ProgramThe 2020 City of Santa Fe Summer Youth and Teen Program as we know it has a new look this year. We will not have a traditional in-person summer program to ensure the safety of the community. There will be many exciting activities to do throughout the summer to keep youth and families engaged. The program is free to all children 6 through 17 years of age. Each week on Monday, starting on June 1st you will have two ways of being able to pick up kits for you to begin the adventure of summer fun. You may pick up the kits at the Santa Fe Public School sites that are handing out school lunches. The second pick up location will be Genoveva Chavez Center.

7/3 Indiana Bones – Combining archaeology, action, adventure, ancient legends, mythology and folklore, Indy thrills and educates audiences with his unique storytelling abilities.

7/17 John Bradley – John is a musical storyteller with years of experience with the Santa Fe Opera. He will be singing musical fairytales!

7/24 Matilde Machiavello – As a storyteller, Matilde believes in the ‘magic power of stories.’ Children and their families will spend a magical hour with her as she weaves stories to capture the imagination. Her stories are influenced by the magical realism of Latin America.

7/31 Flying Debris – A comedy variety show filled with stunts, tricks and magic. Children and their families will be laughing, smiling, clapping, and at times, helping him to perform.

Mathemagical TimesThis summer, Math Amigos and the Santa Fe Public Library have teamed up to provide an exciting interactive program for children and youth with storytelling and engaging math activities. Designed to prevent the summer slide of math skills, participants will have the opportunity to discuss the stories and how they solved the math mysteries. Participants who complete five of the seven activities will be eligible for a raffle drawing of prizes. Stay tuned for registration information.

ArtscapadesThe City of Santa Fe Arts and Culture Department is embracing social distancing in a new, fun program that encourages safe interactive art activities for youth (and the young at heart) during summer 2020. Starting in June, we will be releasing a public art curriculum focusing on pieces from the public art collection and using those artworks to tell stories that engage learning in art, science, and technology. Participants will have the opportunity to select from a variety of four curated public art tours that will provide informational online resources, fun activities, and problem-solving questions for students (young and old alike) to learn more about their public art collection.
