Tamil Cinema Music 26With his impressive voice and handsome looks and flair for
singing, Subbaiah Bhagavathar made his way up fast andplayed lead roles on stage. Soon he was a stage star. Meanwhilehe learnt classical Carnatic music, and emerged as an excellentsinger. He was a major draw and his song ‘Jaya Jaya GokulaBala...” became a rage among audiences.
He sang this song as his signature tune as he entered thestage in every play, irrespective of its period, the character hewas playing and the situation! Even when he played Lord Ramahe entered the stage singing ‘Jaya Jaya Gokula Bala’, ananachronism because Krishna was born long after Rama.Maybe not correct according to the theory of drama of Aristotlebut nobody cared! Neither the audiences nor Bhagavathar!
In a play as Lord Krishna, he came on stage dressed in a silksuit with bow tie and all. Only the top hat was missing!
The musical duels between Bhagavathar and Devudu Iyerled to a misunderstanding between the two artistes and, for twolong years, they went their separate ways. ‘By public demand’they came together again in March, 1933 and the two, referredto as ‘kesaris’ (lions!), worked in the successful mythologicalplay ‘Bhama Vijayam’.
Bhagavathar was Lord Krishna and their battle began oncemore with verve, sound and fury. Mikes were not yet in use inthose days and actors had to sing at the top of their voices!
It is interesting to note that Subbaiah Bhagavathar sentVasan and Kalki a lawyer’s notice for defaming him in ‘AnandaVikatan’! But Vasan was unfazed. He knew that, if the actorwent to court, the resultant publicity would help the circulationof his weekly! As they say in Hollywood, there is nothing called‘bad publicity’. All publicity is good because you are beingwritten about and not forgotten!
The story of Nandanar, as immortalised by GopalakrishnaBharathi, was filmed thrice, each time with a few Carnaticmusic greats. In 1935, another version of ‘Nandanar’ wasproduced which created history at many levels. One of theimmortals of Carnatic music, Maharajapuram ViswanathaIyer, made his only appearance in film as the rich Brahminlandowner Vedhiyar under whom Nandan worked as his lowlyill-treated farmhand. A legend in his lifetime, the mercurialmaestro of music was a bohemian and agreed to play the role, although the lead role of Nandan was to be played by a woman,K. B. Sundarambal. Indeed KBS had reservations for she wasa lowborn woman while Maharajapuram was a highborn Brah-min! Such class, caste, communal distinctions and prejudicesprevailed in top gear in those days. But the great musician didnot care because he was above such narrow view and tunnelvision attitudes. He received a fee of three thousand rupeeswhile KBS got an unheard of salary of one lakh rupees - a megabuck fortune indeed in 1935! The two acting in a film becamenews per se! Public expectation ran high and moviegoerseagerly awaited the release of the film.
The film was produced by Hassandas Classical Talkies anddirected by the noted Hollywood- trained filmmaker, Manik LalTandon. He made many Tamil films during 1930-1940s and‘Nandanar’ was one of them. His films included ‘Bhama Vijayam’(1934), a super hit in which Lord Krishna was acted byMaharajapuram R. Krishnamurthy, Viswanatha Iyer’syounger brother. It was in this mythological box office bonanzathat another legend of Carnatic music, a legend that still liveslong after the mortal man had gone to the yonder blue, thenever-never-land of no return, G. N. Balasubramaniam (im-mortalized under his famous initials, GNB) took his bow incinema as the musical sage Narada. (To be continued)

The work on this stretch has been stalledafter the Russian company Mosmetrostroyabandoned work and Metro Rail terminatedthe contract of Gammon-Mosmetrostroy jointventure.
According to a senior official of CMRL, tenderswill be opened on Oct. 19 and contracts will beawarded the same day. Metro Rail will awardtwo contracts, one for building tunnels andunderground stations between GovernmentEstate and Thousand Lights, and the other forthe work between DMS and Saidapet.
The work includes building connecting tunnelsbetween the two parallel tunnels bored betweenSaidapet and DMS, boring two parallel tunnelsfrom DMS to Government Estate andcompleting the remaining work of constructingunderground stations.
The Russian firm in charge of building tunnelshad completed around 90% of its work of buildingtunnels from Saidapet to DMS, leaving only 3km. of tunnels from DMS to GovernmentEstate.
The firm abandoned work after Metro Railrefused its demand for payment of additionalexpenditure of Rs. 100 crore incurred inexecuting the project. As the elevated sectionhas been completed and commissioned exceptfor a small stretch between Alandur and St.Thomas Mount, CMRL is gearing up to open itsfirst underground line in the city fromTirumangalam to Shenoy Nagar.
