At Sandpiper’s last meeting, President Andy Fontaine lead a lively audience participation discussion centered around the question, “what have you learned recently about your orchid collection”. SEPTEMBER MEETING
DATE CHANGE
September 29th September’s Monthly Meeting changed
Eurychone rothschildiana is a Ugandan species which can be grown like a phalaenopsis. They have beautiful large, oval, wavy stiff olive green leaves with green flowers that have a broad curved lip that is blackish green inside with a white edge. Sepals and petals are green. This flower develops a wonderful fragrance of cinnamon in the morning after having been opened for a few days. Flowers are about 1.5" across.Light Grow this plant in 1000-1500 footcandles for best results. This plant also does well under fluorescent or high pressure sodium lights. .Temperature This plant is a warm grower and should be treated like a phalaenopsis. 63-65 degrees Fahrenheit at night and 75-90 degrees in the daytime is ideal.Humidity 50% or higher is ideal. The use of humidity trays or room humidifiers is beneficial. Water It is best to use rainwater, distilled or reverse osmosis water. Municipal water with a pH of 7.5 or lower can also be used. Water as the mix approaches dryness but do not allow the mix to become completely dry between watering. Overwatering can cause several problems such as root rot and infectious bacteria/fungus in the potting medium. One product we offer that can help these problems if caught at an early stage is Phyton 27 bactericide and fungicide.Fertilizer We highly recommend using Green Jungle Orchid Food, especially formulated to work with rain, distilled, reverse osmosis water or water low in alkalinity. Fertilize with Green
Jungle every time you water if plants are planted in bark. Be sure to flush the mix with clear water only once per month to prevent fertilizer salt build up. For plants in moss or mounted on slabs feed every third or 4th watering as the moss holds a lot of nutrients. Or use GrowMore 20-10-20 Ureafree for municipal or well water. Use at the rate of ½ teaspoon per gallon. If using GrowMore with rain, distilled, or reverse osmosis water, add back in 5 - 10% municipal or well water to supply the necessary calcium and magnesium. Fertilize every other watering in the summer and every third watering in the winter.
Flowering Flowering generally occurs in the spring months, but also have been known to occur in the fall months as well.
Sometimes increasing the light or dropping the temperature a bit may help. The flowers are 1,5 inches in size and are colored in green and white with a deep black green lip. A few days after opening a nice fragrance of cinnamon can be detected.Repotting We find that the plant prefers to be grown in New Zealand sphagnum moss, and in clay pots. Repot before flowering in the spring, usually March

The Importance of Proper Fertilizing
It is always very important to feed your plants, not only while they are growing, but also when they are in bloom. Like all living things, when fed properly, they will grow stronger and produce more flowers. Our product of choice is Dyna-Gro, but any balanced fertilizer may be used. Brands such as Miracle-Gro and Peters are also known for quality fertilizers and supplements. We recommend watering the plant prior to applying fertilizer and then following one of the two sets of instructions on the manufacturer’s label. One is for feeding (1/4-1/2 tsp/gallon) weekly and one is for intermittent feeding (1-3 tsp/gallon) every 2 to 4 weeks. If you cannot fertilize as often as you should, then use a timed release fertilizer to supplement regular feedings. Depending on the brand and formula, granules will last from 3-12 months. Top dress your plant with the manufacturer’s recommended amount. Sprinkle the feed evenly across the surface of the mix taking care not to get it close to the new growths. Do not use this type of fertilizer with sphagnum moss. Because the moss is constantly moist, it will continuously release nutrients and could burn the roots of your plants.
