Welcome New Members As President of Sandpiper OS, I would like to welcome Manuel & Perla Nigalan, of Northfield, NJ, to the Sandpiper Orchid Family as New Members and we look forward to seeing them at our future meetings. Ron Ference

Members Night The activity planned for our February Meeting is a Society involved Member’s Night. This is an evening where Society members have volunteered to spend 5-10 minutes, acquainting us with what is going on in their orchid lives. On previous Members Nights, we have learned about trips to foreign countries in search of native orchids, the construction of a new greenhouse, recently developed techniques of how to successfully raise a new genera of orchid, and numerous other fascinating bits of orchid information. Members should contact Nancy Burke, to arrange for a ‘spot’ in the evening’s program. Join us for our February meeting and learn about what our members have been up to.

DCOS SHOW RESULTS

Sandpiper Orchid Society successfully participated in the recent Deep Cut Orchid Society’s Orchid Show at the Dearborn Market greenhouse in Hazlet, NJ. Sandpiper earned the honor of placing 2nd in the Orchid Societies Display competition. A warm “thank you” to the numerous members who submitted their orchids for our display; with 9 different members receiving ribbons for their outstanding flowers. Lisa O’Neal Award Chrissy Schairer (Second from Right) is seen accepting the Lisa O’Neal Award from Lisa’s brother, Jeffery Scafaria and his wife Carina. Lisa O’Neal was admired by all, as an outstanding orchid grower for many years. The Award, named in her honor after her untimely death, is

given to the Sandpiper member that grows the finest Orchid, during each calendar year. This year, Chrissy Schairer grew a large specimen plant of C. skinneri alba 'Debbie' FCC/AOS.

Chris Rehmann, (Left) an AOS Vice President and Accredited AOS Judge, is seen accepting, from Walter Off, his inclusion into a small group of SOS members, who have been honored with a Lifetime Membership into the Sandpiper Orchid Society. Chris in his earlier years, established his ‘roots’ in the orchid world, by joining the SOS and then served as Sandpiper OS President.

As the Banquet’s speaker, Chris gave an excellent digital presentation on the 2008 Taiwan Orchid Show. He presented numerous pictures of the 118 AOS Awarded Orchids given out by the judges. A spectacular color display of today’s cutting edge orchids was enjoyed by all.

Phalaenopsis bellina, formerly known as violacea var. Borneo, is endemic to the island of Borneo. Plants are found in nature growing in a pendulous fashion, with 2-3 inch green flowers that have purple markings on the lower sepals. They are extremely fragrant and can bloom for several months, particularly in the spring and summer months. When these plants mature, they will develop large, wavy, shiny green leaves.Light These plants will do best in 800-1000 footcandles and grow well next to other phals. or paphs. If the leaves are bleaching out and turning yellow, it is a sign they are receiving too much light.Temperature These plants enjoy warm conditions. In nature, the temperatures are quite warm with nighttime temps. in the high 60's to mid 70's throughout most of the year. The ideal night temperature for flowering is near 65 degrees; day temperatures of 75 degrees or above. It is not uncommon in nature to find temperatures of 85-90 degrees.Humidity These plants require a minimum of 50% humidity, and 70% is ideal. Phalaenopsis and all other orchids have fixed open stomata on the underside of their leaves, which allows them both to absorb water and respirate moisture out of their leaves. The higher the humidity, the more turgid the leaves will become. Water It is important to water these plants in the early morning so the foliage will be dry by nightfall. This will prevent crown rot and other fungal conditions. Water the plants as they

approach dryness but do not let the plant become bone dry between waterings.Fertilizer These plant are known for fast growth. They need feeding on a regular basis. Use a slightly weaker concentration of fertilizer during the fall and winter. With higher light and warmer temperatures during the summer, they can be fed higher levels of fertilizer and more often.Flowering Usually these plants need somewhat cooler and drier conditions before the onset of the flowering season. These

plants will need to be about a 6-7 inch leafspan before they will initiate their first flower spike. They can reach a leafspan of 14 inches, but this will take several years. The flower stem can produce flowers year after year, so as long as it remains green, we do not recommend cutting it back. Leave the stems, and they will flower out again in their season.Repotting Phalaenopsis bellina does best in New Zealand sphagnum moss grown in clay pots. The bark mixes seem to rob too much nitrogen from the plants unless fed very heavily. They also don't grow as quickly in bark mix as they do in sphagnum. Spring or fall is considered the best time to repot these plants. It is best to grow these plants at an angle, as they do in nature, so they can shed water from their crowns.

Lisa O’Neal Award - This award was established in 2006 upon the death of then President Lisa O’Neal. Lisa was renowned for displaying her finest orchids on the monthly Show Table. The winner of this award is acknowledged as having grown the most outstanding orchid of the year which is chosen from those plants that received the 10 point Rosette Award.

February is the start of the Show Season and we all have been prepping our plants all year in anticipation. Orchid Society participation in shows is a key building block in the orchid community. Every member should not only contribute as many plants as they can, but also be of service to those in their Societies who are in charge of organizing and preparing for the show. Best of luck to all and many Blue Ribbons.
