Looking Back - 2009 Dubai World Championship
The event that put Dubai on the map. The Dubai World Championship,
arguably the biggest golfing event in the world. Here we take a look at how
it all began, but most of all what it brings to Dubai.
Earth Course : The Golden Mile
As with the Race to Dubai, it all comes down to this. Greg Norman
discusses the most challenging final four holes of the Earth course, where
The Race to Dubai winner will receive The Harry Vardon
Trophy (first awarded in 1937), US$1,500,000 from the
US$7,500,000 Bonus Pool and a seven year European Tour
Card exemption. The winner of The Race to Dubai will secure
Category 1 Membership of The European Tour similar to the
winners of The Open Championship, the US Open, the US
PGA Championship and the Masters Tournament. The Bonus
Pool will count as Official Money on the final Race to Dubai
standings.
England’s Lee Westwood won the inaugural Race to Dubai
in 2009, winning twice during the season – in the Portugal
Masters and the Dubai World Championship – and
accumulating a record €4,237,762. Northern Ireland’s Rory
McIlroy finished second and 15th place went to Ireland’s
Padraig Harrington.
The Number 1 to 60 players in The Race to Dubai (ranked
according to their earnings from all events on The European
Tour International Schedule) following the conclusion of the
tournament held the previous week have qualified for the
Dubai World Championship being held here at Jumeirah Golf
Estates. The Dubai World Championship winner will receive
US$1,250,000 from the US$7,500,000 prize fund and a
seven year European Tour Card exemption.
This year’s winner will also secure Category 2 Membership
as does the winner of the BMW PGA Championship. The
inaugural Dubai World Championship took place in 2009 on
the Earth Course designed by Greg Norman. The last four
holes measure exactly one mile – 1760 yards – comprising
a short par four, a long par four, a par three and a medium to
long par five.
A full Member in Categories 1-11 of The European Tour
must play 11 tournaments to qualify for the Dubai World
Championship which by playing in would enable him to
reach the minimum number of 12 required to retain full
Membership of The European Tour. A player must compete
in The Dubai World Championship to receive a payment from
The Race to Dubai Bonus Pool and therefore to be eligible to
finish Number One and win The Harry Vardon Trophy unless
he has a Mitigating Circumstance. Affiliate and/or Category
15 Members do not have to play a minimum of 12 as they do
not have the right to enter tournaments and can only play on
invites or qualification.

tournaments in the world. Featuring 60 of the world’s top
golfers, playing 48 different tournaments in 26 different
destinations across the globe, the Dubai World Championship
has undoubtedly taken centre stage golf’s ultimate prize.
From the inception of the championship, support has also
been strong. DP World is the main sponsor, while partners
have rolled in, and the big brands have all signed on, with
many more coming through this year. From Ralph Lauren
rolling out signature lines for the championship, to Rolex
providing time keeping and Emirates flying in all the players,
the signs of success are purely evident, proving to show that
this city has a lot more to offer.
With England’s Lee Westwood creating history and winning
the inaugural Dubai World Championship in 2009, the build
up throughout 2010 could not have got any better. Ever
since Robert Carlson’s tee off at precisely 9:25am on that
cool overcast day in Shanghai, amid the staccato burst of
cameras shutters recording the historic moment, Karlsson
contrived to make a birdie, providing the perfect way to start
a contest that would conclude at this year’s Dubai World
Championship.
Fast forward 12 months, and Westwood plundered the biggest
prize in European Tour history with what he insisted was the
most stunning golf of his career. The 36-year-old Englishman
scooped a Dubai World Championship and Order of Merit
double, ripping out a breathtaking course record eight-under
64. He ended the tournament a massive six strokes ahead of
Ross McGowan and eight clear of Rory McIlroy, whose dream
of lifting the Race to Dubai title was shattered despite a final
round of 67.
This year, the 2010 event expects over 70,000 visitors and
golf aficionados from around the world to make their way
through the gates of Jumeirah Golf Estates. What started off
as a big promise to create a spectacular finale has grown into
another success story for this city, and is expected to continue
growing bigger and better, becoming even more legendary in
years to come.
DUBAI WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
What started off as Dubai’s desire to bring something
unique to the golfing world, transformed into
an exciting partnership between Jumeirah Golf
Estates and the European Tour. It created The Race to Dubai
and gave birth to the Dubai World Championship, which
has quickly become the golfing season’s
ultimate finale. Back in 2008 when the
announcements were made, everything
seemed like a big dream this small city
had. Big lights, big golf course, and yes, you
guessed right, big money.
While everyone stopped to listen, few felt
that Dubai had the confidence to pull it off.
After all, it was big talk. The economic crisis
brought a lot of questions and doubts about
Dubai’s aspirations and what dreams would get shelved. In
all of this, Dubai sat and waited patiently for its moment to
deliver what they promised would be golf’s biggest prize.
Held from November 19 – 22nd 2009, the inaugural Dubai
World Championship proved to be nothing short of an
astounding success. With over 60,000 visitors over a period
of four days, the event enthralled visitors with world-class golf
and fun-filled family entertainment. Millions tuned in to their
television sets, thanks to a host of media that descended
upon this city from around the world, and the
event was a turning point for Jumeirah Golf
Estates. Not only did it stage a spectacle and
put on a world class show, it went a step further
and reaffirmed the Dubai promise, putting
Jumeirah Golf Estates firmly on the world’s
map.
Played on the most anticipated new golf course,
‘Earth’, in the most exciting city on the planet,
the Dubai World Championship has already
become a fitting annual test for the best of the best – and
one of sports’ newest signature events. Now in its second
year running, featuring a staggering US $7.5 million as a prize
purse, the Dubai World Championship is one of the richest

Rich tones of terracotta—reflected on walls of stucco, stone
and brick—set ablaze by the glow from the warm sun. The
Fire neighborhood draws on rustic Mediterranean themes that
complement the beauty of its arresting desert setting. A wealth of
amenities combine with the stunning surroundings to create a place
that fires the senses.
Framed by a wide variety of captivating flora, carefully selected to
reflect the overall theme and to enhance its natural setting, Fire is in
complete harmony with its surroundings. The undulating topography,
with its considerable protrusions, creates a more challenging level of
play. Rustic, and so visually stunning as to captivate even those who
do not golf, the Fire course demands a well-thought-out strategy.
Going directly at the flag may not always be the best approach,
which gives Fire a strong sense of classic links-style play. Over his
storied career, Greg Norman has won 86 professional events around
the world, including two Open Championships and 20 US PGA Tour titles, and was ranked number one in the world for a record-
breaking 331 weeks.
Between Fire and Earth, residents of Sanctuary Falls have access to 36 holes of championship golf.
His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince
of Dubai, has bestowed his official patronage on the Championship meaning the
Dubai World Championship will join an elite list of sporting events such as the
Dubai World Cup and Dubai Tennis Championships.
Leading companies and attractions in Dubai have also demonstrated their support for the
Dubai World Championship, with global marine terminal operator DP World announced as
presenting sponsor - the highest level partnership associated with the event, along with a
host of global brand names including Rolex, Emirates Airline, BMW and Atlantis Hotels &
Resorts to name a few.
Imran Shaikh, CEO, Shaikh Holdings also said: “We at Shaikh Holdings are proud to support the 2010 Dubai World Championship,
as the Official Exhibition Supporter. There has been much anticipation about this high profile event and as the world watches,
Dubai will yet again make history. This is truly a momentous event for everyone involved with Jumeirah Golf Estates and golf in
the UAE. We have achieved a significant milestone toward making the vision of His Highness a reality.”
The inaugural Dubai World Championship, the thrilling climax to the season-long Race to Dubai saw over 60,000 people
descend on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates to catch a glimpse of the stunning finale, which saw English favourite, Lee
Westwood walk away with a staggering $7.5 million prize purse.
EARTH COURSE
Earth Course - ‘The Golden Mile’Greg Norman Describes “The Final Four”
“This short Par 4 is the beginning of a fantastic final stretch. A straight hole played uphill, it’s nothing but risk and reward. A low attracts everything to the left of the fairway which pushes up right under the green. This tee shot has to be played to the left to get the best reward. The safety shot to follow means playing over the low area into a green that slopes away towards a deep low.”
“Significantly longer than the previous hole this is a dog-leg right played over a falaj to a broad fairway that slopes away from the tee and will carry the long drive further. The large lake to which the fairway slopes influences the entire fairway right up to the green. Again, a high risk shot will give you the most reward onto the green.”
“A fantastic, but precise short Par 3. This iconic hole is a true island green. Club selection is crucial for this hole. Wind from any direction will make this very difficult with the tight island green surrounded by a selection of bunkers offering the green the maximum protection. If you’re lucky a stray shot will only find the bunkers, further misdirection will leave you wet for sure.”
“A long Par 5 hole to finish with water off the tee right and a falaj right at the landing area. A second shot can be played either directly towards the green or up the left, as a falaj splits the fairway in two for its entire length. . A true challenge for the ultimate finale.”
HOLE 15 HOLE 16 HOLE 17 HOLE 18
As the slogan for the Race to Dubai states, “it all comes down to this,” the same applies to the last four holes on the
stunning Earth Course. Designed by golfing legend Greg Norman, we get a first hand take on the final four holes by the
designer himself to see what the players are up against.
“I expect the ‘final four’ to be considered one of the most
challenging and exciting miles of golf, in terms of risk and reward.
Comprised of a short par 4, long par 4, a great par 3 and a medium
to long par 5, a lot of things can happen on the home stretch.
There could be a two or three shot swing which will cater to the
best players, providing spectators and the television audience
with a gripping finale to the Dubai World Championship.”

iSwingiPhone Appanalyses your golf swing
The advent of ever-more sophisticated software being at
our immediate disposal via smart phones will continue
to transform our lives in many ways, some we probably
haven’t even considered prior to now.
The USD$5.99 iSwing iPhone application allows users to
record their golf swing on video and replay it frame-by-frame in slow motion and analyze their flaws by drawing lines over their
screen to make sure they’re “on-plane.” This swing analysis application represents remarkable value, given that professional
swing analysis usually costs USD$60 a visit. Coming soon on Android too.
The creation of mobile software company, Keuminotti, iSwing also creates sequence photos like Golf Digest centerfolds that
can be used as a virtual reference, or that you can share with friends via Facebook Connect. The iSwing sells for $5.99 and is
offered for the iPhone 2G, 3G & 3GS.
After 8 months of research, development, and beta testing, the iSwing hit App Store. Since it’s debut, the iSwing has already
broken into the top 5 most downloaded apps in Japan Sports and stands currently at #1 in Korea Sports. “The success we’ve
seen in Asia is translating well to the US where golf can be an expensive pastime. Professional swing analysis can cost an
average of $60 per visit. And for the price of a bucket of range balls, one can analyze their swing on a device they already carry
in their pocket…”, says Charlie Keum, CEO and Founder of iSwing.

iSwingiPhone Appanalyses your golf swing
