Fifth Sunday of Lent March 29, 2009

“I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.’’

~ Jeremiah 31:33

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. DENNIS e-mail: [email protected]

When we’re excited about something it is natural to share that excitement with others. When a baby is born the proud parents show off their new child to everyone. A new car is purchased and we fuss over it (at least until the first shopping cart bangs into it). Our

children earn honors in sports, Boy or Girl Scouts, academics or music and we can’t wait to let everyone know about it. We find someone who strikes the flames of passion in our lives or our country and we give our time and effort to see that person elected to office. Sometimes our zeal can be a bit annoying to others but a lot of times it also helps to excite others in the same way. Imagine what it must have been like for the first disciples of Jesus to hear the gospel proclaimed by the Master Himself, feel the ardor stir in hearts and be compelled to tell others about it. That is the scene in today’s gospel where the Greek speaking Jews came to Philip and asked to see Jesus. They had obviously heard about Jesus and now wanted to see what the fuss was all about. Philip ran and told Andrew, who became equally excited, and together they went to tell Jesus the news. This didn’t stop with the Apostles but, over the centuries, one on one, by word of mouth, the Good News of our salvation through Jesus Christ was preached to the world and reached countless millions of souls. From that tiny little outpost of the Roman Empire the message of God’s love for us spread like wildfire around the globe. In times past it seems as if people were more fervent in their faith in Christ or at least less distracted from Him. True, there are a great many cynics today who do what they can to ridicule religion in general and the Catholic Church in particular. “Comedians” seem to find special delight in mocking our faith but others aren’t so easily amused. There have been times when the religion bashing jokes have fallen like a lead balloon and the “comedian” practically has to bribe the audience to respond, which a few do. We cannot help but ask, though, why do some people do this and where do they get their ammunition? Sadly, we give those who are looking for reasons to dismiss us plenty of ammunition and opportunity to do so. That individuals in the Church stumble and sin is a given, too often it is done with little thought to the consequences. People are looking for answers to their troubled, confused lives. People are tuning in to television evangelists who eagerly tell them what they want to hear rather than what they

need to hear. People look at the Catholic Church and they see one of two things: Hope for the weary soul or a monolithic organization that cares more about saving structures than saving souls. Without knowing it every single one of us is like Philip and Andrew in today’s gospel. People who are looking for answers to the troubling questions of the day know that we are Catholics and, like those who came to Philip, they say “We would like to see Jesus.” The ball is then in our court and what they are shown is up to us. What do we show others when they come seeking Christ in their lives? Is our conduct becoming of a faithful witness of the Good News of Jesus Christ, loyal and faithful to His Church? Do they find comfort, assurance and peace in what we say and do? Do we show them Jesus and all He does for us? FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION: This Friday, April 3, is the First Friday of the month. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will follow the 8:00 a.m. Mass until Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 12:00 noon.

RCIA: This Sunday we celebrate the final Scrutiny for those to be baptized at the Easter Vigil. These powerful rituals date back to the third century when Hippolytus told the

Christians at Rome to celebrate them with the catechumens on a daily basis during the final stages of their preparation for Baptism. Today we continue this tradition convinced that those about to enter into a covenant with God in Christ stand in need of our prayers for deliverance and protection. We understand that we pray not only for those about to be baptized but for our entire community as we recognize the need we all share for freedom from evil and its effects.

Pastor Issam has stated “Music is considered to be an important way to our souls, music and songs are used at our Masses and our youth are strongly attracted to developing their music skills.” The school has 581 students, a motivated music director and only one musical instrument – an organ. If you have any small musical instrument you would like to contribute, please contact Chuck or Ede Radloff at (858)451-1079 and we will arrange to pick up the instruments and ship to the school in Jordan.
