On Wednesday April 24, 2019, 33 4-H SNAC (Student Nutrition Advisory Council) students from Robert Bruce, Liberty, Rice, Adam and Oceano Elementary schools participated in the 4th annual Culinary Academy held at Rice Elementary School. Students worked on recipes designed to improve their knife, stovetop, and baking skills. As well as learning about the countries that these recipes come from. They made omelets and French toast from France, banana oat muffins from England, and ceviche from Peru. After cooking and eat-ing, students prepared posters on what they made and learned. After making the posters parents dropped by to see what their kids had made and gave the students the opportunity to practice their public speaking skills and present their posters to parents and families. The goal for the culinary academy is for students to learn different cooking skills, learn about different cultures and their foods, and also learn how to make healthy recipes.

Busy Weekend for Estrella 4H

April 13 and 14 were busy days for us. Saturday we held our annual Easter party for the residents of

Vineyard Health Center. We served them pastries and cookies and chatted with them. One of our mem-

bers even baked a sugar free cake that tasted like it had lots of sugar! The residents really enjoyed them-

selves. We will go back again on Halloween.

Then Sunday, many of the same members went to a ranch called Twin Rivers. There was a horse Event-

ing show. They were placed at different jumps on the cross country course to judge each rider over the

jump. It was very exciting. We will go back again.

SLODOG Practice Dog Show

At the SLODOG Practice Show on April 6th, SLODOG and 4-H members from

EDNA and Cerro Alta participated in the practice show. The location was Santa

Rosa Park in San Luis Obispo and it was a beautiful day. SLODOG provided

friendly and knowledgeable judges. They were really nice and gave us a lot of

really good suggestions and compliments. The SLODOG Club also brought all

the equipment which was amazing. There were obedience classes for Novice

and Sub-Novice participants. All the people that attended were able to brush up

on their skills and receive feedback on their showing abilities and practice with

their dog. We were also able to watch the advanced SLODOG dogs with amaz-

ing obedience skills. It was a fun-filled day and I was able to learn new tricks

for the showring. Thank you SLODOG for putting this practice show on for 4-H

Dog projects.

We are very excited for next year’s competition. The dairy cattle group would love to have new members to be a part of this event.

Thank you to Alan Vander Horst for teaching us how to judge dairy cattle and spending time to help us practice at the Cal Poly dairy unit. Thank you to the Cal Poly students Robin, Samantha, Olivia, and Sophia for giving us tips on judging and giving reasons at our many practices. Thank you to Rich Silacci and Cal Poly’s dairy science students for organizing the whole dairy judging contest and the awards ceremony in Hanford. NEWS FROM CA MID-STATE FAIR

CALIFORNIA MID-STATE FAIR CANCELS POULTRY SHOWS (PASO ROBLES, CA) - Due to the ongoing concerns regarding the outbreak of Virulent Newcastle Disease (vND) in California, the California Mid-State Fair regrets to announce the cancellation of the Youth Poultry Shows (all fowl species) for 2019. This difficult decision was based on a variety of factors including recommendations from the California Department of Food & Agriculture, Animal Health Branch regarding poultry shows and exhibitions throughout the State, the quarantine areas in Southern California continuing to expand and a recent case of vND in Alameda County that has raised additional concerns. The California Mid-State Fair joins numerous other fairs and poultry organizations in the state in cancelling their poultry shows and exhibits. Although this decision is disappointing for our exhibitors and fair guests, it is in the best interest of the community and the California poultry industry. Since May 2018, staff from the California Department of Agriculture (CDFA) and the U.S. Department of Agricul-ture (USDA) have been working in joint incident command to eradicate vND in Southern California. The highly con-tagious virus has resulted in the euthanasia of more than one million birds in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernar-dino, and Ventura counties. We are confident that these Federal, State and local government agencies will fully contain and eradicate vND soon and we look forward to providing our poultry shows in 2020.
