QUICK HITS1) Pittsburgh’s six road playoff wins are tied with St. Louis for most in the NHL this spring. 2) A win tonight would mark the fourth time in franchise history that the Penguins have won seven road games within a single playoffyear. They also won seven road games in 2009 and 1991. The franchise record is eight road wins, established in 1992. 3) Goalie Matt Murray is a perfect 5-0 in the playoffs immediately following a loss. Overall, the Penguins are 6-1 this spring after a loss. 4) Phil Kessel, who leads the Penguins in points both in this series and throughout the playoffs, has had at least one point in 16 of his23 games thus far. 5) Today’s Game 6 falls on the anniversary of the Penguins’ 2009 Stanley Cup championship win in Game 7 against Detroit at JoeLouis Arena (2-1) on June 12, 2009. PITTSBURGH’S ALL-TIME PLAYOFF RECORD IN…Game 6: 17-15Game 6 on the road: 9-10 TEAM NOTES: GENO HEATS UPEvgeni Malkin is coming alive offensively at the perfect time for Pittsburgh. He has scored goals in back-to-back games for the firsttime this spring. In his last two games, Malkin has three points (2G-1A) and eight shots on goal, which equals his shot total from the firstthree games of this series, when he was held pointless.
Pittsburgh Penguins: Media Notes
Malkin has been very streaky this spring, running off point streaks of six games and five games, sandwiched betwwen a couplestretches of multiple games without points.Malkin picked the perfect time to collect his first game-winning goal of the playoffs in Game 4, as his second-period man-advantagescore gave the Penguins a 3-1 series lead. While it was his first game-winning goal of the playoffs, it was the fifth game-winning markerthat Malkin has factored into (1G-4A), the highest total among all Penguins players. The game-winner was the 10th of Malkin’s playoff career. Only Jaromir Jagr (14) and Mario Lemieux (11) have more in franchisehistory. With his next assist, Malkin will tie Jagr for third place on the franchise’s all-time playoff assists list with 82. RARE SETBACKAs Penguins Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Lange would say, Pittsburgh threw everything and the kitchen sink at Martin Jones inGame 5, but the Sharks netminder helped his team force a Game 6 tonight by making 44 saves on 46 shots. That marked just the eighth time in Penguins playoff history that they have fired 42 or more shots in a regulation game. The differencein this game was it’s the only time the Penguins have lost in such a scenario. The 46 shots are the second-most fired by Pittsburgh this spring. The Penguins had 48 shots in a 4-2 Game 3 win against Tampa Baylast round.Pittsburgh’s 46 shots were its most ever in a Stanley Cup Final game. The previous best was 39 in Game 1 of the 1992 Stanley CupFinal vs. Chicago.Including the regular season, the Penguins are 11-5-2 this year under Mike Sullivan when firing 40-plus shots. DUALLY NOTEDOne of the neat facts heading into Game 6 is that All-Star blueliner Kris Letang has assisted on the game-winning goal in all three ofPittsburgh’s wins here in the Stanley Cup Final. MURRAY’S NUMBERS As mentioned above, Matt Murray is a perfect 5-0 this spring following a loss. He has a 1.75 goals-against average (9 GA/308 MIN)and a .935 save percentage (129 saves/138 shots).Murray is 3-2 when he can eliminate the opposition.Murray’s next playoff win will equal the NHL rookie record of 15 currently shared by Patrick Roy (1986), Ron Hextall (1987) and CamWard (2006).
