San JoaquinPrincesses For over fifty years, the Miss San Joaquin County scholarship organization has helped girls get involved in the community while earning the chance to compete in the Miss California and Miss America pageants. This year, they’ve also added the Little Princess Program, a non-competitive mentorship program open to any girl aged 5-12 who resides in San Joaquin County. “It gives them the opportunity to see what’s involved, and gets them comfortable with being on stage and talking with people,” says Karen Grimaldi, executive director of the Miss San Joaquin scholarship organization. “The greatest percentage in pageants is based on talent and interview, so this gives young girls the opportunity to see the full picture—it’s about being the whole individual.” Each princess attends a tea party where they receive a sash and tiara, and helps at the Miss San Joaquin pageant by presenting flowers and performing their own number on stage. Throughout the year the princesses help at various community events, and also have the chance to attend a week-long program sponsored by Miss California to learn more about California and various community organizations. This year, the program was so new that there was only one participant, 9 year-old Rachel Fuller, who received a certificate of recognition from the Mayor of Tracy for being San Joaquin’s very first princess. —Katy Berry

Lookin’ Good New Kids’ Boutique in Stockton
Angela Scannavino Karp has always been a fan of fashion, and like most excited parents, dressing her own kids has been a source of inspiration. It also sparked the idea for her new Lincoln Center children’s boutique, Sassy Pants, which opened in March. “I’ve always had an interest in fashion, and I’ve definitely enjoyed buying clothes for my kids. You can do fun things with them that you might not do for yourself.” Now that her children are 6 and 8, Karp finally has the time to open the boutique, which she says has been a long-time dream of hers. The shop will carry a variety of styles, including designers like Ben Sherman, Flowers by Zoe, Jean Bourget, Monster Republic, and Hala Baloo. “It’s a little bit of everything. Some lines are European, and some are definitely funkier and not quite as ‘cutesy.’” The shop also carries gifts for boys and girls, and sizes range from infant to ten years. —K.B.

12 SAN JOAQUIN KIDS SPRING l 2011
san joaquin kids and parent
Eleven year-old Mariah Serrano may only be in sixth grade, but she’s already added an impressive title to her resume: published author. The journey began two years ago when Mariah’s teacher asked the class to write their own unique stories. Mariah chose to write about a little boy who befriends a giant while looking for his lost puppy. The story, The Apple Tree and the Giant, is based on the timeless moral: Never judge a book by its cover.
“Everybody in the whole village feared the giant because they thought he was mean,” says Mariah. “But toward the end, the little boy knew he wasn’t and they became best friends.” Mariah says writing the 24-page book was a fun process, and her favorite character to create was the puppy that helped bring the little boy, the giant, and the villagers together. The book was illustrated by Mariah’s grandfather, Gilbert Olivas, who teaches children’s art classes at San Joaquin Delta College. Both Gilbert and his wife, Jessie Olivas, helped Mariah with the process of getting published, which they say took several long months. The book was officially released by Xlibris last summer and has sold roughly 300 copies since, though orders keep coming in. Mariah says the overall experience has been exciting and the community has been very supportive of her achievement, reading the book in classrooms, putting a copy in her school library, and even inviting her to do a reading at a Barnes and Noble, where she was able to sell her book. Gene Acevedo, president of the Mexican Heritage Center and Gallery (where Mariah did a reading of the book) says, “Mariah’s experience highlights how it’s never early to encourage young minds, as with dedication and commitment their ideas can become tangible pieces of art.” Mariah’s grandmother says many adults have approached her saying they’ve enjoyed reading the story to their own children, and that Mariah has been an inspiration to other kids. Mariah says her goal is to eventually have the book in every library and school. As for the future, she has aspirations to become a nurse, but intends to continue writing.

14 SAN JOAQUIN KIDS SPRING l 2011
san joaquin kids and parent: your kids
The Not-So-Terrible Two'sby Katy Berry
According to Dr. Scott Jensen, Psychology Professor at Stockton’s University of the Pacific, parents commonly become frustrated at this stage because they perceive the toddler as being purposively manipulative. Though it may seem that way at times, it’s rarely the case. “Toddlers are trying to explore their worlds,” says Dr. Jensen. “They are exploring boundaries, trying to find out how things work… It’s not all volitional. At two years-old they just don’t get it. The more we remind ourselves of that, the easier it may be to say, ‘I can handle this.’”
One common toddler trait is the discovery (and rampant use) of the word “no.” “The saying ‘no’ has a lot to do with the way language develops,” says Dr. Jensen. “What they’ve learned is that ‘no’ is a powerful word because parents use it a lot with them, so they begin to use it.” While exploring the impact of the word, your toddler may refuse anything from food to baths. Parents should remain in charge, and lead their child by verbalizing what needs to be done and promptly following through by doing it. “Your actions have a lot more impact than what you say. So when you tell them repeatedly that they have to do something, but you don’t act, your actions say they don’t have to do it,” says Dr. Jensen.
Positive reinforcement is also an effective way to teach your child good behavior. Many parents develop a habit of letting their children know when they’re performing a task incorrectly, rather than when they’re doing something right. Giving constant attention to incorrect behaviors is reinforcing those actions to the child, even if the attention is negative. Dr. Jensen suggests parents be more vocal in praising their kids, rather than correcting them. A similar attitude should be applied to temper tantrums. If possible, it’s best to completely ignore the outbursts to demonstrate their ineffectiveness. Then, follow through by making sure your child finishes what they were initially asked to do. It’s not always convenient to ignore a tantrum, so discipline can sometimes vary depending on the situation. But no matter what, tantrums should never be an effective means for the child to avoid doing what they’re told.
For more information: University of the Pacific is presenting the Pacific Child and Family Center Parenting Program, a ten-week course on effective parenting skills. The Pacific Child and Family Center, 3601 Pacific Ave.Stockton, (209) 946-7322
Every parent reaches a point when the word “NO!” makes their body tense, and tantrums seem to test the limits of their patience. There are actually valid reasons for your two-year-old’s behavior, and learning about this important stage of development may make things a bit easier on you and your child.

18 SAN JOAQUIN KIDS SPRING l 2011
san joaquin kids and parentsan joaquin kids and parent: your family
We spoke to family therapist Dr. Irit Goldman to learn more about common issues stepmoms face, and how to deal with them.
One feeling stepparents experience is that they do all the work of a parent with none of the credit or appreciation. This may be because children who are struggling with a separation will continue to love their bio-logical parents unconditionally, but take out their anger and frustration on the new part-ner. (“You’re not my mother!”) Stepparents must summon a great deal of empathy and understanding for the hurting child, though it may be hard at times. Dr. Goldman sug-gests stepping into their world and letting them know that you’re not trying to take anyone’s place, and that all you want is to be their friend and make their mother or father
Your Family:Stepping Up to the Challenge: Stepmoms by Katy Berry
Stepmoms have been stuck with a bad rap ever since Cinderella was forced into child labor by her wicked stepmother. In reality, taking on the role of stepmom is a complex job—not without its happy moments, but certainly full of struggles.
happy. At the same time, don’t let your-self become a martyr. One way to help make the transition easier for everyone is to make sure boundaries are set. “Just like they respect the teacher at school,” says Dr. Goldman. “They are in someone else’s domain and must realize it’s that person’s home as well.” One way to reinforce boundaries is to work with the other parent to create a consistent routine for both households. But communicating with the ex can be a challenge in itself. “I always tell the hus-band that it’s his job to deal with the ex,” says Dr. Goldman. “The husband is the one who needs to set boundaries with the biological mother, and say it’s not ok to disrespect my wife or my girlfriend. When he doesn’t, his partner starts to feel that she’s unworthy, not acknowl-
edged, and forced to compete for his attention.” Blended families face many challenges, and it is important that a couple evaluate how strong their relationship is before making a major com-mitment. If your partner is loving and support-ive, then the issues are ultimately worth work-ing through, but Dr. Goldman suggests that anyone considering marriage go to pre-marital counseling to ensure that they are prepared for the trials that await them. For those already in the trenches, remem-ber to be compassionate without forgetting yourself in the process. Being “one big happy family” won’t happen overnight, but if you’re willing to step up to the challenge, it is possi-ble to have a happy and rewarding relationship with your new stepchildren.

Since the late 1930’s our family has worked the land and raised various crops right along with their children. Farming has changed considerably, especially with mechanization but the core values remain the same. Caring for the land, appreciating the bounty it provides, and realizing where our food comes from. Bring your family and friends to experience light strawberry picking in May and light cherry picking in June. Everyone will learn how these fruits grow, how to u-pick, and then be provided with a u-pick basket.

ESCAPESSan Luis Obispo & Avila Beach by Don and Ann Jackson
SLO (San Luis Obispo’s nickname) and its closest oceanfront town, Avila Beach, offer plenty to do, though doing it SLO-ly seems to be the unwritten rule. With less than 50,000 population, this appealing college town has been proclaimed our country’s “Happiest City.” Nearby Avila Beach is the perfect picture-postcard of a cozy California beach community.
What to see and do San Luis Obispo: Strolling along the charming downtown walkways is a must (www.downtownslo.com), while anyone with elementary school aged kids will enjoy touring the beautifully restored Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa—learning about California’s missions is part of our state curriculum (www.missionsanluisobispo.org). If you’re in town during the week, visit the four-block Main Street Farmers' Market, every Thursday night, all year long. It’s the city’s signature event resembling a huge community block party (www.slocountyfarmers.org). Drive through the Cal Poly University campus (www.calpoly.
edu), or hike/bike any of the city’s 25 miles of scenic trails. For more information plus upcoming events, check out www.visitslo.com.
Avila Beach: Soak up the beachfront ambience wandering through the quaint and sparkling-new waterfront promenade, cafes, and shops; or stroll Avila Pier and their pristine dog-friendly beaches (www.avilabeachpier.com). When open, the Point San Luis Lighthouse is a beautiful lighthouse setting and panoramic vista—if you’re up for it, take the rather strenuous hike up to the lighthouse, or hop a ride on the trolley (www.sanluislighthouse.org). Hike the easy cave trail above town to a grotto high above the ocean, or walk/ bike the scenic all-paved Bob Jones Trail along San Luis Creek (www.visitavilabeach.com). Young children with you? Then don’t miss the small aquarium at Avila Beach Sea Life Center (www.sealifecenter.org).
Where to stayThe one-of-a-kind Apple Farm Inn has been popular for dining and lodging for years.
Each room is distinctively different, but all have a classic Victorian look, and many have fireplaces. Complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres, homemade cookies, and apple cider are served daily. Dining is American comfort food with an emphasis on “everything apple.” Be sure to try their mouth-watering apple dumplings (www.applefarm.com).
Just for grownupsDrop by Kelsey See Canyon Vineyards to taste their highly regarded apple-based wines (www.kelseywine.com). For over 100 years, the famous hot springs at Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort have been a destination for anyone believing in the curative powers of sulfur-based mineral water. Each room has a spa on the deck, some with regular H2O and others with mineral water. Dinners in the Gardens of Avila restaurant are exceptional, and additional hillside hot tubs are unmatchable. Hike up the Sycamore trail for wonderful hilltop vistas (www.sycamoresprings.com).

Mom on a Mission:
Jennifer PappasOwner, Papapavlo’s Bistro and Bar, Stockton
Married to: Andy PappasKids: Elliana, 11, Andreas, 9, and Stephanos, 8.
CO
URTESY JEN
NIFER PA
PPAS
I’m a mom of 3, a wife of almost 14 years, and co-owner of Papapavlo’s Bistro and Bar with my husband. I met Andy during
my last semester in the Eberhardt School of Business at University of the Pacific. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Business
Administration, with a marketing emphasis, a month before we became engaged.
Our first child, Elliana, was born in January 2000. Eighteen months later Andreas was born, and seventeen months after that
Stephanos arrived. Until then I had been serving and helping manage Papapavlo’s. After our babies were born, I continued
serving on weekends and once a weeknight (while Daddy stayed home), along with doing the bookwork for the restaurant, play
dates, and Mommy and Me classes. We opened our second Papapavlo’s in Modesto December
2002. I would go to Modesto (leaving the babies with Andy), work lunches, then drive home so Andy could work dinners. On
weekends we traded; one in Stockton, the other in Modesto. In 2007, we sold the Modesto Papapavlo’s and opened our current location in Lincoln Center. My life as a mother, wife, and business
woman kicked into high gear. The school year was starting and we had to decide to enroll Stephanos in part or full-time
preschool. Since Papapavlo’s was set to open in a few months, it made sense to enroll Stephanos full-time so I could help get the restaurant started, but I cherished being with him while he was
so young. He loved preschool, but I vividly remember driving out of the parking lot sobbing. I felt so guilty that I voluntarily
enrolled him full-time. It’s tough being a good business woman and a good mom.
A bonus of owning Papapavlo’s is that Andy and I both take our kids to and from school. Even though Daddy goes to work at night,
we get lots of family time. Another great bonus is that I can skip cooking and grab a good, healthy meal to-go at the restaurant!
Our children are now in 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade. I now process our payroll myself for 80-plus employees, make weekly schedules
for 50, and do all the bookwork, in addition to being at the restaurant whenever time allows, but always every Friday and
Saturday night. I’m thankful my career allows the flexibility for me to go on my
children’s field trips, check their homework every night, make their lunches, and read them bedtime stories. You often hear “kids
grow up so fast,” and I’m telling you, my one mission is to look back on my career as a mother, and never have one single regret.
