program description:

In this customized program, the students embark on an experiential learning journey in San Francisco, an iconic and diverse metropolis which is also home to the worldʼs leading hub for entrepreneurship – Silicon Valley. Besides going on exclusive visits at Fortune 500 companies as well as start-ups, the students attend an academic seminar given by a professor at Berkeley, meet with Silicon Valley professionals and entrepreneurs and have plenty of opportunities to discover the cityʼs most fascinating historical and cultural highlights.

Dining at one of the numerous trendy restaurants in "the City" shall also not be missed when the group gathers for the special Welcome and Farewell Dinners. On top of that, the guiding theme throughout this exciting week will be the students ̓"Start-up Consulting

Challenge" projects (highlighted in pink in this proposal).

On the 1st day of the program, the students are divided into small teams, which each receive a unique start-up challenge they have to solve over the course of the week. There are two options for this challenge:

In 5 highly interactive workshops given by Andreas and Janina, the students then get to work on their "Start-up Consulting

Challenges". Our workshop trainers/private coaches use methods, such as Design Thinking to teach the students how to generate their own business ideas or come up with solutions to existing problems by employing the Visual Thinking method.

On the last day of the program, a pitching competition serves as the platform for each team to present their results in front of a jury. Regardless of which option is chosen, the jury committee is composed of Andreas, Janina, the accompanying CUHK faculty member as well as local entrepreneurs. The winning team of the pitching competition, which has convinced the jury members the most then takes home a fantastic prize.

the state-of-the-art framework explained

The program schedule has been put together carefully in order for the students to have a maximum learning impact since we have strategically connected the visits, workshops and their own projects on a day-to-day basis.

Day 1 serves as an introduction for the students to get to know each other and to test their team building skills by handling an initial smaller challenge. On Day 2, they visit the birthplace of Design Thinking, learn more about the company IDEO and at a later stage learn how they can apply individual Design Thinking tools on their projects in Andreasʼs and Janinaʼs workshop. The academic seminar on Day 3 provides theoretical background to important aspects of founding a business start-up and working with the Business Model Canvas – a tool the students will focus on in that dayʼs workshop and later on use for their own "Start-up Consulting Challenge" projects.

The visit at Apple on Day 4 serves as a real-world example of a company that has successfully implemented a model the students discover in the ̒ Golden Circle ̓workshop with Andreas and Janina in the afternoon. Subsequently each team gets to apply this model to their own project. Day 5 gives the teams some time for individual coaching sessions with Andreas and Janina in order to prepare themselves for the pitching competition.

The preceding visit at 500 Startups allows the students to get advice from local start-ups and entrepreneurs, who had to pitch their way into the incubator themselves at some point. The pitching competition on Day 6 serves as the grand finale of the program during which each team receives feedback on their final presentation.

Arrival Day – November 25th 2017

The students and faculty members arrive at different times and make their way from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to the selected hotel individually. They receive detailed directions on how to get to the hotel in our ̒ Welcome Info Package ,̓ which is e-mailed to all participants prior to their departure.

OPTIONAL: Andreas and Janina gladly welcome those participants who wish to grab a welcome drink after their check-in at the hotel. This optional first welcome drink is held at the hotel bar or a restaurant close by from 8-9PM.

Day 1 – November 26th 2017

9AM: All participants meet at the hotel conference room for a round of intro-ductions. Subsequently, Andreas and Janina give a workshop on team building showing the students how they can effectively work together as a team. After dividing the group into teams of 5 or 6, the students receive their respective "Start-up Consulting Challenge" projects, which they will work on over the course of the week. In order to find out how effectively they can already work together, each team faces an initial smaller surprise challenge.

11AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel by a private tour bus, which will be at our disposal for the morning and afternoon. A private tour guide welcomes everyone on board and shares some historical and cultural information about the Bay Area while we make stops at the main highlights throughout the city. Lunch boxes will be distributed to each participant on the bus.

.

After this wonderful first cultural activity, the students are dropped off at the hotel and reconvene in the hotel conference room in order to get started on their projects. Andreas and Janina act as coaches while each team performs a market analysis on their respective "Start-up Consulting Challenge“. Small snacks and drinks are served during this session.

8PM: The group heads over to Beretta Restaurant for the official Welcome Dinner to enjoy contemporary Italian comfort food in the Mission District. The day ends at around 10:30PM.

Day 2 – November 27th 2017

9AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel by a VIP bus, which will be at our disposal for the rest of the week.

Monday begins with our first of three special company visits at BootUp Ventures. During this visit, a VC professional provides the students with an overview of the Silicon Valley ecosystem and shares how start-ups are funded by his company in order to achieve their visions.

The second visit of the day allows the students to meet an important player in the Silicon Valley entrepreneurship community called mediaX. As an industrial affiliate program, it helps to connect researchers at Stanford with companies in order to facilitate the process of bringing technologies to the market for people to use. During our visit, the programʼs Executive Director, Martha Russell, explains mediaXʼs role in the Silicon Valley ecosystem and presents a few of their partners.

IDEO, as a global design and innovation company, will be the third company the students visit. Upon our arrival, one of their top designers talks to our group about the Design Thinking model and how its tools can be used to create more customer-centric products and services.

After a lunch break, everyone is transferred to one of peerspaceʼs modern entrepreneurial meeting rooms. After Andreas and Janina show the students how they can use the Design Thinking model themselves, each team gets some time to work on their own "Start-up Consulting Challenge" projects. Design Thinking allows each team to use their creativity and come up with user-centric solutions for their product or service ideas, which they will eventually pitch to a jury on Friday.

After the workshop, our VIP bus takes everyone back to the hotel and the students get some free time in order to explore San Francisco by themselves. The students have the option to be dropped off at a nice neighborhood, which lies on our way back to the hotel. Suggestions on things to do and where to grab dinner are given by Andreas and Janina on our way back to the hotel. The day ends at around 8PM.

Day 3 – November 28th 2017

9AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel and transferred to the Silicon Valley by our private VIP bus. Upon arrival, two company visits at Google and Facebook await them. The visit at the Google headquarters starts with a guided tour of the Google Visitor Center, Googleplex and the Android Garden. The students hear insightful facts about Googleʼs unique work culture, discover what it takes to be a "Googler" and learn how this legendary company changes the world of business with big data, artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles.

At the Facebook headquarters, the students learn about the ̒ Facebook way ̓of innovation and discover how the company continues to change the way other companies worldwide do business.

Following a 1-hour lunch break, the group is transferred to Berkeley for an academic seminar given by the Faculty Director and Professor Ikhlaq Sidhu at the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship & Technology. During the seminar, the students get to know a model, which is used to evaluate innovations of start-ups/companies, identify the factors that make Silicon Valley entrepreneurs successful and receive advice on business modeling.

In the late afternoon, Andreas and Janina give another workshop on the Business Model Canvas (BMC). With this tool, each student team engages in an iterative process, in which they transfer their "Start-up Consulting Challenge" ideas into different business models and test whether these have the potential to be implemented as sustainable projects. The BMC also helps them to focus on the 9 key areas they should touch upon in their final pitches on Friday.

After the workshop, our VIP bus takes everyone back to the hotel allowing the students to explore "the City" further. The students have the option to be dropped off at a nice neighborhood, which lies on our way back to the hotel. Suggestions on things to do and where to grab dinner are given by Andreas and Janina on our way back to the hotel. The day ends at around 8PM.

Day 4 – November 29th 2017

9AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel by our private VIP bus and are transferred to the Tesla headquarters in Palo Alto. After a company presentation as well as a Q&A session, the students get a private tour of the factory to take a closer look at the production process of its innovative and sustainable electric cars. Afterwards, the group is in for a real treat when a couple of students experience an unforgettable Tesla Model X test drive.

Wednesdayʼs second company visit is at the Apple headquarters. There, the students get to know the companyʼs corporate culture and learn how they use innovative business models in order to keep its leadership in the era of disruption.

After the group has enjoyed their lunch, everyone is taken to another peerspace meeting room. In their fourth workshop with Andreas and Janina, the students learn that Apple is not only a leader in terms of innovative design and technology but also in Marketing Communication. The students are introduced to yet another state-of-the-art model called the "Golden Circle", which Apple itself uses. With this model, the students learn how they can effectively change their communication, e.g. in terms of a Marketing message from a company to its customers or a pitch of their "Start-up Consulting Challenge" ideas to members of a jury (or potential investors).

In the late afternoon, everyone is taken back to the hotel. Those students who have signed up for culture option 1 (please see F2. for the 4 culture options available) are accompanied to enjoy the selected activity. Those students who have not chosen to participate in culture option 1 get some free time.

Day 5 – November 30th 2017

9AM: All participants are picked up at the hotel by our private VIP bus and are taken to 500 Startups – a Silicon Valley incubator that has funded hundreds of companies all over the world.

Upon arrival, one of the founding members of 500 Startups gives our group a tour of their office and provides a more in-depth presentation on the incubatorʼs activities. Subsequently the students also get to meet 4-5 local entrepreneurs who each give short presentations of their own start-ups and provide advice on how to ace a pitching competition given their personal experience. Each of them had to successfully convince 500 Startups in form of a pitch in order to get a spot at this incubator. Some of the lined up start-ups include sprig, vizalytics and GUIDEKICK.

In between of the various start-up presentations lunch may be enjoyed together with some of the entrepreneurs the students just met.

In the late afternoon, everyone is transferred back to the hotel and meets up in one of the conference rooms for a Review Session, which allows the students to prepare for the pitching competition. Andreas and Janina act as coaches and give each team the opportunity to receive individual feedback. The students get to decide on what they wish to keep working and when their team is finished.

The day ends at around 6PM giving the students additional time to roam around the Bay Area. Suggestions on things to do and where to grab dinner are given by Andreas and Janina.

They are also a proud sponsor of the ̒ StartUP Pitchfest San Francisco .̓ Upon arrival, one of their lead attorneys gives a more in-depth presentation about Pillsbury Law and answers any questions our group may have.

After this visit, the students get ready for the pitching competition, as the grand finale of their work. The competition is held either at a peerspace meeting room or at the office of one of the start-ups that has provided a challenge to solve for the students.
