San Anselmo is known for its quaint downtown full of antique shops and charming boutiques. But for the 26th Annual San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival, we decided to imagine what it would like to be a beach town.

Surf ’s Up in San Anselmo, which takes place up and down San Anselmo Avenue Saturday and Sunday, June 27 and 28, will feature all of the usual attractions, including premium wines, a wide variety of food to enjoy, some 200 arts and crafts booths, music on two stages and fun activities for all ages.

But festivalgoers can indulge in some beach fun, too. Stroll down the “boardwalk,” enjoying cotton candy or ice cream. Observe the sand castle-building in the hands-on kids activities area. Play volleyball. Buy a commemorative Frisbee. Duck out of the sun and watch the surfing movie Puddles of Sky from Glas Films, at Town Hall.

Beach and surf bands, part of the great music lineup, will enhance the “coastal” experience. (See pages 5-6.) Don’t miss the sounds of the California Beach Boys, Drifting Sand and My Stupid Brother.

Surfing fans will also want to check out the surfboard exhibit on Tunstead Avenue. Presented by Fat Kat Surf Shop in Fairfax, some historic and the newest surfboards will

be showcased. Chad Peterson, owner of the shop, will

be sharing some of his favorite boards, including an original Bobby Owens Lightning Bolt from 1972. Peterson, himself a local surfer, will also provide an original Zephyr Dog Town Board, one of Jeff Ho’s first Zephyr-shaped boards built in 1974. A 1964 Greg Knoll board will be on hand as well as a 1960s-era retro Tiki board, adorned with gold and glitter. There will also be some brand new boards from Screwball and AKA Boards. You can also visit with members of the Marin County Surfrider’s Foundation.

These boards are built with fiberglass and foam, although the earliest known surfboards were made from wood. It is widely thought that Polynesians of the Pacific were the first to surf a wave in 2000 BC, though the first recorded accounts of surfing came from journals of Captain James Cook in 1776. The early wood surfboards were less than 6 feet in length and quite narrow. Only in Hawaii were they built to fit the rider.

San Anselmo invites you to enjoy Surf ’s Up and some beach-time fun in the sun!

The San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce has the pleasure to welcome you to the 26th San Anselmo

Art & Wine Festival — San Anselmo’s premier event. Whether you are a first-time visitor to the area or a dedicated festival follower, we know this event will offer you a majestic setting to meet artists, hear music, and experience San Anselmo’s one-of-a-kind shopping and award-winning dining.

This year we brought the beach to San Anselmo to offer some summertime fun with surf bands, sandcastle building, commemorative Frisbees and a wide variety of activities. Keeping the festival dynamic with new themes and events keeps things lively and exciting. We invite you to take the trivia quiz on page 4 and bring it to the Gone Surfin’ at Tunstead Stage to win some great prizes. Surf ’s Up in San Anselmo promises fun for the whole family with Kids Zones, hands-on art activities, a historic surfboard display and a surfing movie.

Besides attending the festival, we ask you to experience everything San Anselmo has to offer. Our incredible little hamlet provides more than expected. Take a stroll down Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, paralleling San Anselmo Avenue, and browse some of the Bay Area’s finest collectible and antique stores, and restaurants. Adjacent to Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, you and your family can have fun at Play-Well TEKnologies—a GIANT Lego-type children’s city—for all ages. On San Anselmo Avenue, relax in Creek Park with a boxed lunch from Bubba’s Diner or Comforts then treat your artistic talents to a drop-in craft session at Doodlebug.

The beauty of San Anselmo is unsurpassed. We welcome you to our festival, to our town, and look forward to your return visit or making San Anselmo your home.

—Connie Rodgers, President of the San Anselmo Chamber of Commerce

Who doesn’t like surf or beach music? It’s a feel-good sound that brings to mind Jimmy Buffet, running barefoot on the sand and playing volleyball. Surf ’s Up in San Anselmo is bringing the beach to town with a musical lineup sure to please. See the music schedule on page 6 for a complete schedule. Music will be performed simultaneously on two stages. Sometimes it will be hard to choose which one to go to — the Gone Surfin’ at Tunstead Stage or the Beach Party at Bolinas Stage. We did that on purpose! We want you to have a myriad of musical choices on a fine summer day.

My Stupid Brother My Stupid Brother hails from a small town just outside Santa Cruz. According to the Good Times Weekly of Santa Cruz: “My Stupid Brother serves up a Slurpee-fueled Green Day/Ramones-ridden brand of diet punk filled with vocal harmonies, sudden stops and tricky tempo shifts.” The band has been cutting their rock star teeth since 2002, before their voices had ever changed. The band is charged with the friendly sibling rivalry of brothers George and Henry Chadwick (ages 20 and 18) and drummer Jesse Wilkinson, 18. The band has created a stir at local clubs and was voted the best band in Santa Cruz County, when they were voted first place out of 50 bands in the Your Music Magazine’s 2009 battle of the bands. My Stupid Brother’s soon-to-be-released second CD, What You Need, features guest producers Greg Camp (guitarist and songwriter of Smash Mouth) and Tony Sales. The Chadwicks are sons of multi gold and platinum audio engineer and producer Daren Chadwick, who worked with recording artists such as Paul McCartney, Motley Crue and the Dead Kennedys. Wilkinson also grew up in a musical family. Don’t miss My Stupid Brother on Saturday from 4 to 6pm on the Gone Surfin’ at Tunstead Stage.

Drifting Sand Here are some fun facts about Drifting Sand: They were named after a sign on Highway One in Pescadero; Al Jardine of the Beach Boys is a fan and loves the song Surfin’ with Britney; they have two albums, Surfpoop and Drifting Sand; they have performed many benefits for the Surfrider Foundation. According to Drifting Sand leader Surfer Spud, “Surf, sand, sun, summer and beautiful beach girls! That pretty much sums up everything we write about. We get stoked just thinking about the beach and can’t even imagine life without it.” The surf-pop band Drifting Sand from San Francisco has been writing, recording and performing songs about surfing and having fun at the beach since 1993. They perform a blend of traditional surf music from the ’60s, mixed with ’80s new wave pop sound. Drifting Sand performs Sunday from 1:30 to 3:30pm on the Gone Surfin’ at Tunstead Stage.

The California Beach Boys When it comes to beach music, everyone loves the California Beach Boys, a tribute band that brings the music alive. Members of the East Bay band have actually played with surf legends such as the Ventures, Surfaris, and The Sunrays. They have played at a wide variety of fundraising events and functions. See them sing favorites such as “California Girls” on Saturday from noon to 2pm at the Gone Surfin’ at Tunstead Stage and Sunday from noon to 2pm at the Beach Party at Bolinas Stage. It will be a beach!

The Back Pages If you loved the music of the ’60s, you will love the music of The Back Pages. The band formed in 1988 and continues to play the tunes from their youth, including songs from the British Invasion, surfing, and folk rock. The San Francisco-based group’s music is played with the same intensity “that drove kids wild in the ’60s.” So step back in time and listen to The Back Pages on Saturday from 12:45 to 2:45pm on the Beach Party at Bolinas Stage.

Zoo Station Zoo Station returns to the San Anselmo festival for a second engagement after being highly received in 2008. The U2 tribute band does not play surf music at all. They sing U2 songs and the U2 look-alike band members have been performing at events all over the state since

2002. Their stage show spans three decades of songs including music from U2’s new album No Line on the Horizon. SF Weekly and SF Bay Guardian have voted Zoo Station the best cover band. Many fans say if they squint they can actually believe they are at a U2 concert, the musicians are so talented and bring a big concert feel to smaller venues. Don’t miss Zoo Station on Sunday from 4 to 6pm live on the Gone Surfin’ at Tunstead Stage.

Petty Theft Petty Theft is back for a return engagement as well. The Tom Petty tribute band makes everyone feel happy and gets folks dancing to hit songs such as Honey Put on Your Party Dress and Don’t Back Down. The band is a favorite at Marin Brewing Co. and venues throughout the Bay Area. Lead singer Dan Durkin leads Petty Theft. Petty Theft performs on Saturday from 2:15 to 3:45pm on the Gone Surfin’ at Tunstead Stage. There will be a dance contest, so start practicing!

Luvplanet Luvplanet plays original tunes that know no bounds. The chemistry between vocalist Nicole Sutton and guitarist Mark McGee is the band’s creative force. Luvplanet includes bassist Tommy Sisco and drummer Scott McKenzie. Their albums have included Luvplanet (2003), State of Mind (2005) and Lucky One (2008). They performed at the 2008 Rock’n Blues at the Lake with Third Eye Blind and have also performed with acts such as Boston, Elvin Bishop, and the Tubes. McGee has toured and recorded with Greg Allman for more than a decade and performed on the MTV Headbangers Ball. You definitely want to catch Luvplanet on Sunday from 2:30 to 3:30pm on the Beach Party at Bolinas Stage. They really rock!

David Martin’s House Party This party band has performed for more than 20 years. The interactive 11-piece all-star group with high energy has a reputation that “anything can happen.” They have performed at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City as well all over California. David Martin is a Bay Area native who began performing at age 6 and is known for his powerful vocals and guitar skills. He was the founding member of San Francisco New Wave bands The Lloyds and The Buzz tones. David Martin’s House Party will be rocking the Beach Party at Bolinas Stage from 4 to 6pm on Sunday.

Zebop! Taking their name from a classic 1981 Santana album, these seven talented musicians perform the sound of Santana with passion and originality. The band has gathered the attention of Bay Area Santana fans, who follow them to different music festivals and venues. The group was formed in 2005 by lead guitarist Antonio Marquez.

The Courtney Janes The Courtney Janes are a duo from Marin County who believes music should always be played from the heart. Dennis Haneda has been strumming and singing his songs all his life. Ben Hulan joins him. They play everything from folk and bluegrass to rock. See the Courtney Janes On Saturday from 10 to 11:30am and on Sunday from 11:30am to 1:15pm on the Gone Surfing at Tunstead Stage.

What would the San Anselmo Art & Wine Festival be without the wine? Although beer lovers won’t be disappointed—with Moylan’s Brewery and Marin Brewing Co. pouring the best of their homespun brew, wine aficionados enjoy sampling and tasting fine local wines.

Souvenir wine glasses, required for wine tasting, are available at $5 each. They are sponsored by First Federal Bank. The beer glass, sponsored by Marin Brewing Co. and Moylan’s, has cool artwork and its new lightweight plastic design makes it easier to carry around—at the festival or the beach.

Participating wineries include Fetzer, Clos Du Bois, Mirassou, Kendall-Jackson, Ravenswood, Beaulieu Vineyard, Murphy-Goode, Smoking Loon, Firefly Ridge, Ross Valley Winery, Blackstone and Cahill Winery.
