If you’re looking for rockin’ music, exciting festivals and events, stunning museums, progressive art galleries and historic sites, the best food and wine this side of Dallas and plenty of family-friendly distractions every weekend of the year, San Angelo has got you covered. Home to nearly 100,000 people, San Angelo is an oasis at the edge of the oil-rich Permian Basin for arts lovers, foodies, bar-hoppers and retirees alike, bordering Texas’s Hill Country and just a few hours’ drive from Texas’s coolest city hotspots, including Austin, San Antonio and Fredericksburg.

With the Concho River winding through the center of town along with a couple of reservoirs, San Angelo is a gateway city rich in culture, diversity and quality local venues. Locals already know that San Angelo has a bustling music and arts scene, with the city’s Downtown area ever more resembling Sixth Street’s little sister, attracting visitors from throughout the State of Texas each weekend.

San Angelo’s restaurant scene is the envy of the region, home to some of the best restaurants that West Texas has to offer, with new cafes, bistros and gourmet restaurants opening up all the time. No matter what kind of cuisine your palate craves, you’re sure to find it in San Angelo, from sushi, burgers and BBQ to Mexican, delicious deli fare and gourmet pizza. Prepare to be wowed by the awesome choices of steakhouses, many of which have graced the pages of Texas Monthly’s Top Ten lists.

If you fancy a night out on the town for some live music, boot scootin’, rockin’ and rollin’ or just some chill out time with a favorite bottle of fine wine, you’ll find all of this and more in San Angelo’s booming nightlife scene - pubs and saloons, rockin’ dance clubs with house music and live music events pretty much every weekend, as well as a decent selection of quality wine bars and cocktail lounges. Just pick a night, get your boots and your big hair on, and head downtown for one of the coolest nights out you’ll have in West Texas.

For those who like their history a little on the tawdry side, in its early days, San Angelo had an interesting reputation – known in the 1800s for its brothels, casinos and saloons, troops from Fort Concho frequented the little town across the river, adding to its wealth and prosperity. San Angeloans today, rather than shy away from their colorful past, choose to celebrate their place in the history of the Wild West. The joie de vivre that made San Angelo a wealthy city in the 19th century lives on in San Angeloans of today.

For travelers, San Angelo offers a wide array of unexpected pleasures. From the funky and fun art scene evident throughout the town, to the historic downtown landmarks and quirky retail establishments displaying inimitable West Texas character and a hint of Hill Country style, San Angelo offers so much to see and explore. With all the outdoor festivals and attractions, parks filled with walking / biking trails and plenty of nature’s delights to explore, San Angelo simply can’t be done in a day.

This certified market regularly draws visitors from far beyond San Angelo’s City Limits, who all come to stock up on farm-fresh goods.

To experience authentic frontier history, head down to Fort Concho National Historic Landmark. Established in 1867, the Fort was the regimental headquarters of the 4th and 10th Cavalry. A tour includes the barracks, headquarters and hospital, which was rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1911. You will also see the chapel, which doubled as a schoolhouse/meeting room plus the officer’s row. Quarters 4 contains the EH Danner Museum of Telephony which documents the history of the telephone. Many Living History events are sponsored by the Fort, including the Buffalo Soldiers, Cavalry, Infantry and Laundresses re-enactments as well as a vintage baseball team that practices with original clothing and equipment.

Truly a community museum, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts on One Love Street in downtown San Angelo is a multi-functional space serving community needs while showcasing many artistic treasures. The welcoming space, reminiscent of a covered wagon, includes a permanent collection of over 276 pieces of fine art that include ceramics, American painting and sculpture and Mexican art. Community members can take advantage of the large educational center with a ceramics studio that hosts frequent events for children. The Museum also holds monthly events like the San Angelo Chamber Music Series, Family Days and downtown art walks. Here are just a few highlights of the contemporary lodging choices you will find in the San Angelo area.

Probably the most interesting place to stay in San Angelo is the Inn at the Chicken Farm Art Center. One very popular suite is the Artist’s Suite created from two silos connected together. RESTAURANTS San Angelo is quickly becoming the premier West Texas destination for foodies, with unique, quality new eateries opening up all the time, headed up by some of the most talented and interesting chefs in Texas, like Jason Helfer at Peasant Village, Earl Mulley at the River Terrace Restaurant and Mike Holdridge at the River Valley Café & Grill (who used to be boxing legend Muhammad Ali’s personal chef). Chefs who have spent years, even decades, honing their craft in places like Japan, Korea, California, Dallas, New York and even Thailand, have laid claim to San Angelo, either returning to their roots or making it home. From casual sushi joints and fresh and original delis, from upscale fine-dining restaurants to gourmet pizzerias, your dining choices in San Angelo are vast and growing every year. Let’s eat!

Butler’s Pantry frequently appears on any list of San Angelo’s best local restaurants, for good reason - it’s a quaint, charming little place, set in what looks like an old house rather than your conventional restaurant. Most entrees are priced at less than $10, which makes this one of the most budget-friendly restaurants in town. The sandwiches and salads make for a delightful lunch, especially when washed down with Butler’s Pantry’s Iced Tea of the Day or a chilled glass of something dry and white.

An easy distance from Goodfellow AFB, the Chadbourne Street Deli is a local lunchtime military favorite. The lovely Miss Holly serves a good, wholesome, homestyle menu of sandwiches, salads, baked potatoes and soups, as well as a daily special menu that can feature anything from lasagna to quiche.

The Cork & Pig Tavern is one of San Angelo’s most popular eateries, serving new American cuisine and brick oven pizzas to die for, as well as a fabulous selection of fine wine and some of the Cork & Pig’s house specialties and signature salads. Good food, great drinks and a friendly staff make this one of our top picks for date night, a family-friendly pizza treat, a business lunch or dinner with friends. The bar and patio is open late, with a live music schedule available on their website. Late night food menu includes a selection of pizzas for pickup. Show military ID for a 10% discount (also applies to police and firefighters).

Fuentes Cafe Downtown is one of our top picks for Mexican food in San Angelo, famous for its extensive menu of classic Mexican comfort food that includes an excellent Chicken Nachos; Catfish Tacos (battered strip of fresh fish placed in a soft corn tortilla with guacamole, cabbage and pico de gallo); tamales, sandwiches and chicken fried steaks. One of San Angelo’s longest established restaurants, opened by the Fuentes family three generations ago, Fuentes Cafe Downtown of today is convenient to the Cactus Hotel, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, the Downtown shopping and central business districts.

For a little entertainment during your dinner, head to Ichiban Japanese Steak House. While you start with a bowl of comforting, subtly-spiced broth, the chefs cook your food in front of you on a large hibachi grill. Try chicken, teriyaki chicken, shrimp, vegetable, sirloin, teriyaki steak, or filet mignon. Or, if you can’t make up your mind, get one of the combination options. A sushi menu is also available.

Hands down, one of our favorite pizza places in San Angelo. Scratch that - in West Texas. Pronto Pizza is a relative newcomer to San Angelo and in just a short time, has earned itself a top spot among the city’s pizza lovers - try the Mexicano pizza, the Italian sausage, or the Supreme. One topping pizzas are priced at just $4.99, which makes Pizza Pronto one of our top picks for a family-friendly, budget-friendly bite.

One of San Angelo’s premier sushi spots, Nakamura Sushi & Korean Cuisine will surprise and delight sushi afficiondos and anyone who’s ever served in the Pacific and is hankering for some authentic Korean cuisine. Menu standouts include several types of sushi including Makimono (cooked and raw), Nigiri, Sashimi, Chirashi, and Hawaiian Poke. Expect entrée prices in the $10 to $15 range. Enjoy a choice of lunch specials for just $6.99 on Monday through Friday as well as daily specials on sushi on Tuesday through Friday.

The Diner at Sealy Flats is a very popular addition to the Downtown San Angelo scene, and has become rapidly famous among locals and visitors for its comforting, blues-inspired menu of tasty breakfast, lunch and dinner choices. For dinner, start with a glass of wine from their extensive wine list and enjoy one of their excellent burgers with sweet potato fries, fried zucchini, regular fries, or fruit. Live music plays on the patio from 19:00 to 23:00 on Tuesday through Friday, and at 18:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. Relax with good food and a cold drink on the shaded patio while local and national artists take the stage. A calendar of upcoming music is posted online at http://www.sealyflats.com/.

Not technically a restaurant but we couldn’t resist. Cakes in a Cup is a great little cupcake boutique on Southwest Blvd - if you’re crazy about cupcakes you’ll love the fun and elegant flavours of Almond Joy, a chocolate coconut cupcake with infused chocolate buttercream; the local favourite, the Concho Pearl, a white velvet cupcake topped with white chocolate buttercream icing; and our personal guilty pleasure, the Blackout, a sinful dark chocolate raspberry cupcake topped with chocolate raspberry buttercream icing and drizzled with chocolate ganache. Take a big box home. You know you want to.

NIGHTLIFETexas is world-famous for its unique brand of country rock and as the unrivalled capital of West Texas cool, San Angelo plays host to some of the best live music events all year long, thanks to the emergence of a thriving and surprisingly kick-ass downtown nightlife scene. For local live music and Happy Hour events, grab a copy of San Angelo Spotlight for local listings, or just pick a night and head downtown for a night of bar-hopping, taking in The Deadhorse, The House of FiFi DuBois and the legendary Blaine’s Pub; drop into The Black Swan or D’Vine Wine for fine cheese paired with something dry, white and delicious; or get your bling on and head to Club 84, San Angelo’s hottest nightclub venue with some of the funkiest house music around.

Club 84 is one of San Angelo’s hottest nightlife venues, very popular with the military crowd - it’s a high energy, city-style club with awesome sound and light, not to mention the funkiest house music in town. Located right across from ASU, Club 84 is packed every weekend night. The party starts at around 11 pm. Dress to impress, and don’t forget the bling!

Cool, colorful daiquiris await you at Grinners Daiquiri Bar. The Bar boasts its style is “New Orleans meets West Texas,” so for a taste of Bourbon Street in historic downtown San Angelo, try one of the frozen daiquiris or your favorite cocktail from the full-service bar. Grinners serves up ten flavors of your favorite daiquiris in fun colors from neon green of the Key Lime Daiquiri to the orange of the Peach Beach daiquiri, and with thirty master flavors, there is always something new to try. Since opening in November 2010, the bar has become a downtown destination that is upscale and stylish.

Grab your cowboy hat and head to Midnight Rodeo bar in San Angelo. The original Midnight Rodeo was opened in San Antonio in 1982. Since then, Midnight Rodeo bars have opened in Austin, Amarillo, and San Angelo. The San Angelo bar is over 18,000 square feet with plenty of room for dancing and enjoying a few drinks with friends. There are four full service bars with nine bartender wells so guests can receive prompt and courteous service. If dancing isn’t your thing, pull up a stool to the counter that lines the wood dance floor and do a little people watching instead.

With dark floors and comfortable black leather furniture, the Black Swan Wine Bar showcases some of the Art Gallery’s works of fine art and glass. Pull up a tall-backed chair or find a seat on a couch, and sit back and relax with a glass of wine. On Fridays and Saturdays, enjoy live music in a casual atmosphere. To complement the wines, order up a cheese plate of three, five, or seven varieties of European cheeses - cheese plates come with grapes, crackers and almonds. We can recommend the goat’s cheese with chives, the manchego and the smoked cheddar.

NIGHTLIFE

At Fifi’s Retro Lounge at The House of Fifi Dubois, enjoy a cold beer or a mixed drink and groove to the sounds of the rocking’ bands that Fifi’s hosts pretty much every weekend. Fifi’s started out as a retro / vintage store, selling modern American furniture and fashion accessories from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Retro store by day, by night Fifi’s is one of the downtown district’s busiest nightspots. Don’t miss Wine Me Up Wednesday ($3 per glass on all house wines), and Two Dollar Tuesdays / Throwback Thursdays (a great variety of $2 16oz drafts every Tuesday and Thursday).

For the ultimate rock n’ roll experience in San Angelo, head down to The Deadhorse Live Music Venue & Rock ‘n Roll Lounge. The Lounge is classically renovated and fully equipped with all the ingredients for a rockin’ good time. Outside, you’ll hear the entertaining banter of intoxicated rockers and proud groupies on the smoking patio, and inside, you’ll be treated to local and regional rock n’ roll bands. The Deadhorse is located on Chadbourne St. in Downtown San Angelo’s Entertainment District and prides itself on being “sparkle and glam meets dirty and edgy”. Be warned, some of the music isn’t for the faint of heart but you’re in for a pretty awesome time, regardless of your musical taste.

The Wall hosts live bands every Friday and Saturday night, and is open 7 days of the week from 16:00 - 02:00, with Happy Hour daily from 17:00 - 19:00. There are Salsa Lessons on Mondays, followed by Texas Hold’em Poker for Prizes on Tuesdays, Way Back Wednesdays (music from the 80s and 90s), and a ‘Hair of the Dog Day’ on Sundays, with Bloody Marys priced at just $3.00. If you’re a smoker, you’ll appreciate the 380 sq ft shaded smoking patio at the back. The Wall also partners with the San Angelo Blues Society on the third Sunday of each month for a ‘Beer, Blues & BBQ’ event.

For a no-frills, Texas-style good time, head on down to Blaine’s Pub. The brick exterior and a guitar decorated with the Texas flag give you a little preview of the bar’s interior. Inside, you’ll find peanuts on the floor, cold beers, and a casual atmosphere enjoyed by locals. It all started in the 90s, when Blaine Martin “reverse engineered” the pub from the jukebox. Based on a belief that most people can agree on the music of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard, Blaine built a place that he would want to drink beer in. After the bar became popular, Blaine built a stage and started to bring in live music, supporting the rise of the Texas Music scene. Blaine sold the pub in 2006, and later passed away in 2009, but his legend lives on

Winding through the city of San Angelo is the Concho River, home to the freshwater mussels that produce the unequalled Concho Pearl. The River Beautification Project, seeking to improve the area around the river within the city, installed several gardens, waterworks, a child’s play area, enhancement lighting and a stage, along with a nine-hole golf course and over four miles of trails along the river’s edge for strolling and biking. You’ll find several shops and restaurants along the River Walk making it a pleasant way to see the city. And best of all, it doesn’t cost a thing.

A star among the historic shops in downtown, Miss Hattie’s is an institution, a museum that lends a peak into the history of this famed brothel, visited by so many business men and cowboys throughout its existence until its shut-down in 1946. Each of the rooms is named for one of Miss Hattie’s girls, complete with silk gowns, gilded tin ceilings, velvet drapes and lace curtains. After your tour, stop by Miss Hattie’s Café and Saloon to marvel at its authentic period décor and have an unforgettable lunch.

The Angelo State University Planetarium’s Sci-Done HD digital projector has the ability to project more than 500 million stars and celestial objects at a time, and at a clarity that is normally not visible to the human eye. Projected onto the large tilted dome theater, these projections turn the ASU Planetarium into an impressive interactive classroom with regular events and seminars held to delve into the wonders of astronomy, physical science and geology. The Planetarium is open to the general public with adult admission charged at just $5 or $3 for kids.
