At Its Core, the Twilight Saga Is a Story About______

TO THE NAKED EYE, IT MAY APPEAR THAT: The Twilight saga is a story about love. And vampires. And family. And abstinence. And racism. And the founding of the Mormon faith. And orphans, in a really weird way.

BUT ACCORDING TO SOME EXPERTS WHO THOUGHT REALLY HARD ABOUT THIS: Twilight is a story about all of these things. And more things.

Since the series' debut in 2005, multitudes of thinkers and scholars have claimed to know the real, profound meaning behind Stephenie Meyer's famous vampire-romance novel series. This tends to happen sometimes when books ignite widespread consumption

Twilight Article

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight has one more award to add to its list of accomplishments. A best-seller, the inspiration to the much-acclaimed 2008 film starring Robert Pattinson and  Kristen

Stewart, and encompasser of the hearts and minds of us millions, Twilight tops the list with the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Award for favorite book.

Robert Pattinson, who was expected to present an award at the show, unexpectedly cancelled his plans. Twilight, on the other hand, still made a big appearance at the show, with starTaylor

Lautner accepting the award.

Though it surprises noone in Twilight's regular fandom that so many chose this novel as their favorite, it does not hurt, either.

What with all the controversial and upsetting press surrounding the Twilight series - particularly its film stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart lately - it's nice to see Twilight in an appropriate light.

Congratulations to Stephenie Meyer, author of theTwilight

series novels and inspiration to many, for all of her achievements. The latest, it seems, is the Childrens Choice Book Award's Author of the Year prize - as well as Teen Choice Book of the Year.

The contest, whose "winners were chosen in six categories, broken down by agre groups--220,000 online votes were cast by children around the country," resulted in two wins for Meyer for the same work - Breaking Dawn.

Breaking Dawn, the fourth and (though some might hope otherwise) final book in the Twilight series, may arguably be the most adult of the lot.

[ * Warning * the following contains spoilers about Breaking

Dawn by Stephenie Meyer ]

While love scenes in the book are of a sheltered nature, the overall essence of them is still quite prevalent. While some might argue that children who read these scenes might not understand them, others might say they are fully capable of understanding what married folks do on their honeymoons.

Regardless, the presentation of the awards to Meyer is very interesting. Whether or not children are fully capable of understanding the romantic innuendos contained in Breaking Dawn (not to mention the grueling agony suffered by its protagonist through the eyes of her all but green-eyed admirer and the ripping and shredding that occurs on multiple occasions in multiple different scenarios), and whether or not the award was decided by popular-type vote, the fact that Meyer is being recognized with awards such as these show that either society is becoming more progressive or children's books as a genre are being given a wider berth. In any case, congratulations once again to Stephenie Meyer for all of her well-deserved accomplishments and recognition.

Bella Swan moves from Phoenix, Arizona to live with her father in Forks, Washington to allow her mother to travel with her new husband, a minor league baseball player. After moving to Forks, Bella finds herself involuntarily drawn to a mysterious, handsome boy, Edward Cullen. She eventually learns that he is a member of a vampire family who drinks animal blood rather than human blood. Edward and Bella fall in love, while James, a sadistic vampire from another coven, is drawn to hunt down Bella. Edward and the other Cullens defend Bella. She escapes to Phoenix, Arizona, where she is tricked into confronting James, who tries to kill her. She is seriously wounded, but Edward rescues her and they return to Forks.

Edward and his family leave Forks because he believes he is endangering Bella's life. Bella goes into a depression until she develops a strong friendship with Jacob Black, whom she discovers can shape-shift into a wolf. Jacob and the other wolves in his tribe must protect her from Victoria, a vampire seeking to avenge the death of her mate James. Due to a misunderstanding, Edward believes Bella is dead. Edward decides to commit suicide in Volterra, Italy, but is stopped by Bella, who is accompanied by Edward's sister, Alice. They meet with the Volturi, a powerful vampire coven, and are released only on the condition that Bella be turned into a vampire in the near future.

“The bond forged between us was not one that could be broken by

absence, distance, or time. And no matter how much more special or

beautiful or brilliant or perfect than me he might be, he was as

irreversibly altered as I was. As I would always belong to him, so

would he always be mine.”

Victoria has created an army of "newborn" vampires to battle the Cullen family and murder Bella for revenge. Meanwhile, Bella is compelled to choose between her relationship with Edward and her friendship with Jacob. Edward's vampire family and Jacob's werewolf pack join forces to successfully destroy Victoria and her vampire army. In the end, Bella chooses Edward's love over Jacob's friendship and agrees to marry

“Imprinting on someone is like... Like when you see her...

Everything changes. All of a sudden, it’s not gravity holding

you to the planet. It's her.

Bella and Edward are married, but their honeymoon is cut short when Bella discovers that she is pregnant. Her pregnancy progresses rapidly, severely weakening her. She nearly dies giving birth to her and Edward's half-vampire-half-human daughter, Renesmee. Edward injects Bella with his venom to save her life and turns her into a vampire. A vampire from another coven sees Renesmee and mistakes her for an "immortal child". She informs the Volturi, as the existence of such beings violates vampire law. The Cullens gather vampire witnesses who can verify that Renesmee is not an immortal child. After an intense confrontation, the Cullens and their witnesses convince the Volturi that the child poses no danger

“My life and his were twisted into a single strand. Cut one, and you cut both. If he were gone, I would not be able to live through that. If I were gone, he wouldn't

live through it, either.”

Twilight Trivia

1 When Bella and Charlie eat at the diner, the dark-haired woman in a red sweater who is sitting at the counter with a laptop, is Stephanie Meyer, author of the “Twilight” books.

2 Kristen Stewart’s stunt double, Katie Powers, also plays a waitress at the diner.

3 Stephanie Meyer got the idea for “Twilight” from a dream in which a boy and girl are seen in a meadow. The boy is beautiful, sparkles and obviously a vampire. After this dream, Meyer wrote “Twilight” and made her vampires sparkle in sunlight.

4 More than 5,000 actors auditioned for the role of Edward.

5 Robert Pattinson had never heard of “Twilight.” He auditioned only because he liked Kristen Stewart in “Into the Wild.”

6 Robert Pattinson flew from England to director Catherine Hardwicke’s home to audition. Hardwicke had him and Kristen Stewart, already cast, rehearse a love scene on her bed.

7 As soon as he was cast, Robert Pattinson moved to Oregon to work on his character. He worked out five hours a day with a trainer, learning to fight, play baseball and do stunts.

8 Illustrated Movie Guide states that Rob Pattinson wrote and performed two songs for the soundtrack. Pattinson also played piano during “Bella’s Lullaby.”

9 Kristen Stewart has green eyes, but wears brown contacts to play Bella.

10 Henry Cavill was Stephanie Meyer’s first choice to play Edward. By the time filming began, he was 25 and too old. He was offered the role of Carlisle Cullen, but by then already had been cast in “The Tudors.”

Twilight Trivia

16. Kristen Stewart turned 18 during filming. She was given a birthday cake, then returned to work for a full night of shooting.

17. The dress Bella wears to the prom cost $20. Edward’s suit was the film’s most expensive item of clothing.

35. Seated on a bench prior to prom, Bella is offered assistance by Jacob because her foot is in a cast. Edward returns and says, “I leave you alone for one second and the wolves descend” — an only slightly veiled reference to Jacob’s wolf status, which is not revealed until the second book, “New Moon.”

36. When Bella is invited to the Cullen’s home, a cross lies against the wall. Though not discussed in the film, Edward explains the history of the cross in the book. Vampires do not fear crosses.

37. The Cullen crest depicts three images: hand (faith, sincerity), lion (strength, ferocity) and the trefoil (perpetuity). Jasper, Emmett and Edward wear this crest on wristbands, Rosalie on a necklace and Alice on a choker

38. . Director Catherine Hardwicke wrote possible lines for Robert Pattinson when he and Kristen Stewart jump from the bedroom window to the tree. He chose to say, “You better hold on, spider monkey.”

39. The “Twilight” Special Features DVD explains that, for the baseball scene, characters used clear plastic Christmas ornaments in place of actual baseballs because they were not wearing baseball gloves. CGI was used to make the plastic balls look like baseballs.

23. Director Catherine Hardwicke gave the nomad Victoria her own personal pants/jeans to wear during the boat scene in which James and Laurent attack Waylon Forge.

24. Even though breakaway glass is used for the salad bowl, Rosalie cuts her finger and bleeds on the glass. This is why she’s wearing gloves in the re-shoot.

25. MTV Films and Maverick Films were original producers, with Paramount to distribute. MTV could not find a satisfactory script and cut its ties. Summit Entertainment bought the rights, and produced and distributed the film.

26. The song by Radiohead in the movie never made it onto the soundtrack.

27. Nikki Reed got Robert Pattinson’s songs into the film. She used her laptop to secretly record him singing and playing guitar, then shared it with the film’s producers.

28. When Edward enters the cafeteria, Robert Pattinson’s sister, Lizzy, can be heard singing vocals on the soundtrack.

29.Edward’s car is a Volvo C30.10

Twilight Trivia

35. The film’s American premiere was on Nov. 16, 2009, which, in the lunar cycle, is a new moon.

36. A vampire’s diet is revealed in the color of his eyes. The Cullens have topaz eyes because they feast on animal blood. The Volituri have red eyes because drink human blood. When the Cullens’ irises turn completely black, it is an indicator of extreme hunger.

37. Only after months of speculation and rumors, director Chris Weitz and the novels’ author, Stephanie Meyer, confirmed that Taylor Lautner would return as Jacob Black. They had doubted that he could become fit in time. But Lautner added almost 30 pounds of muscle. In addition to hiring a personal trainer, he consumed 3,200 calories a day. Lautner said, “I would literally carry a Baggie of beef patties, raw almonds and sweet potatoes. It’s not like I was eating ice cream every two hours. It was difficult.”

38. Each member of the Wolf Pack had to have papers proving his Native American descent. Chaske Spencer is Lakota Sioux, Bronson Pelletier is Cree-Metis, Alex Meraz is Purepecha (Tarasco), Kiowa Gordon is Hualapai, and Tyson Houseman is Cree.

39. Bella and Edward were in a swimming pool in Vancouver with weights in their pockets to film the scene when she jumps off a cliff into the ocean.

40. The Italian policemen seen pulling over Alice’s Porsche, when Bella hops out to help Edward, are not actors; they are real policemen from Italy.

41. “Kwop kilawtley” means “Stay with me forever.” This is the Quileute translation for what Jacob says to Bella when they almost kiss in the kitchen.

42. Director Chris Weitz pulled off a trick when Edward gets out of a truck and argues with Bella after her birthday party. Weitz put Edward next to the camera on the right, but used his double, dressed like Edward, in the driver’s seat. When Edward gets out, it is the double; when the real Edward steps in front of the camera, it appears he got there faster than humanly possible.

43. Tippett Studio created CGI wolves for “New Moon,” but first visited a wolf preserve and studied the animals for hours before starting work.

44. Actress Dakota Fanning accepted the small role of Jane, a guard for the Volturi who has the power to inflict pain with her mind.

45. Bryce Dallas Howard originally turned down the role of Victoria, believing it was too small. She later accepted the part, replacing Rachelle Lefevre.

46. Rachelle Lefevre had to be fired from playing Victoria because the
