“I developed a greater sense of my Jewish identity … made lifelong friendships … and gained relevantbusiness skills that have served my early career development. Hillel not only played a large part in my time at university, but has informed much of the person I am today.” — Elysha Ames, Account Management, JWT (BA, UBC ’07, MBA, UBC ’11)

“… a comfy couch, a place to study, a welcoming friend, a hot lunch, a free piano, and, more often than not, a rain shelter. Hillel was and will always be a home away from home.” — Carmel Tanaka, Emergency and Disaster Aid Management, Tel Aviv University 2011-2012 (BA, UBC ’08)

“Hillel is a social place where I would meet my Jewish and Israeli friends … to meet the Jewish guys of AEPi, join the fraternity, take on bigger and bigger roles as the years went by, and ultimately become the president of the fraternity in my last year of university. Hillel was a big part of this wonderful experience!” — Niv Ben-Shlomo (AEPi President, 2007-08, BSc, UBC ’08) “At Hillel, I found a place where I could comfortably be myself and explore my Jewish identity. With Hillel,

I had the opportunity to make a positive contribution to the larger Vancouver Jewish community and UBC campus community through involvement with Shabbat dinners and Jewish holiday celebrations, Holocaust Awareness Week, Israel programs, social action projects, and student leadership conferences.” — Daniel Wiseman (BA, UBC ’08)

“Hillel has had a profound impact on my life. Through Hillel, I gained invaluable leadership skills, met my wife, and took part in countless memorable trips, events and discussions. I cannot imagine what my formative university years would have been like without Hillel. Thank you!” — Ron Boaz, International Conference Manager (BSc, UBC ’07)

“Hillel is a wonderful partnership. It supported me physically and socially but also required my leadership and input. Hillel greatly contributed to my undergraduate success.” — Baruch Huberman (BSc, SFU ’11)

“Simply put, Hillel was home on campus.” — Ben Groberman (BA, UBC ’09)

“At Hillel I learned to connect with my Jewish Identity and take pride in it.” — Freeman Poritz, Embassy of the United States, Tel Aviv (BA [Hons], UBC ’09)

“Hillel was my family. It’s where I met my best friends, it’s where I went to discuss issues that matter to me, it’s where I could go to be myself. I cannot imagine what my life would be like today without it. It has taught me who I am as a leader and so much more about myself. For this I am forever grateful!” — Roxie Lewin (BEd, UVic ’12)

“Hot lunches and Shabbat dinners allowed me to connect with the Jewish student life on campus and build relationships that I will have for years. Celebrating and learning about Jewish holidays at Hillel made me feel proud to be a Jewish student and now an active partner in the Jewish community.” — Craig Leebosh, Merchandising Manager at Pepsico Beverages Canada (BA, UBC ’09)

“When I started university I had no more of a Jewish identity than having been bar mitzvahed at 13. Hillel allowed me to not only connect with other Jewish students, but also reconnect with those from my youth, sparking lifelong friendships and bolstering a strong Jewish identity.” — Craig Louis, Technology Teacher (BA, UBC ’09)

Last year, with your support, Hillel students:

– Helped prevent UBC student fees from going to Hamas

– Opposed an event at SFU that equated Israelis with Nazis

– Elicited a statement on civil discourse from SFU’s president

– Undermined the Canadian tour of British radical George Galloway by educating endorsers about his agenda of hatred and support for terrorist groups

– Countered the hateful Israel “Apartheid” Week with a positive, fun series of events celebrating Israel’s myriad contributions to the world – Israel: A Party Week!

Strengthening Campus and Community for 65 Years!

Hillel Responds

– Challenged anti-Israel activist groups and visiting extremists on every campus with courage and facts

– Defended Israel’s right to exist, and educated thousands of peers on three campuses about the Jewish people, about Israel’s six-decade struggle for peace, and much more.

What will this year bring?

We can’t be sure. But, with your support, our students will be prepared.

Hillel is a crucial voice for Israel and the Jewish people in difficult times.

Help keep our voice strong.

But our students respond effectively, courageously and proudly, with truth and even humour. We are changing the climate on campus and among the next generation of Canadian leaders.

W ill our values survive? Every generation is responsible for passing to the next the rich heritage, wisdom and values we inherited.

In today’s world, this mitzvah is as urgent as it has ever been.

There is no single place where more Jews come together than on campus. 85% of Jewish young people – from the most observant to the unaffiliated – go to college. This is our generation’s greatest opportunity and challenge. Hillel is our people’s last best defence against alarming trends toward assimilation.

If we want our values to continue after us, the last best way we can do this is by supporting Hillel in our estate planning.

Is there any legacy that perpetuates our values better than Hillel? Please consider supporting Hillel now and in the future.

O ur Future Starts Here. Vancouver Hillel is where the next generation of Jewish British Columbians unite with our heritage and traditions. Through programs of tzedakah and tikkun olam, Torah study, kabbalah, intellectual rigour and spiritual exploration, unaffiliated young Jews find their place in our community.

Vancouver Hillel is also the vibrant centre of education and advocacy from which the next generation of Canada’s leaders are learning about the Jewish people, our history and our connections to our ancient and modern homeland.

As the centre for Jewish life on campus, Hillel engages and empowers Jewish young people to take pride in and share our people’s story with their peers.

Your support is an investment in our shared future – and has a proven, guaranteed return on investment!

Thank you for making it possible through your support.
