Unit-I
Introduction
Yoga is the richest and noblest legacy the ancient
Indians have gifted to the world. It is a timeless
pragmatic science; it is an experimental science; it
is an age old spiritual science; it is a culture-art-
science; it is the grandest of all sciences; it is the
science of the integral man; it is the science of
sciences. It is the mother of all sciences.
Yoga is a method of education in the society.
It is an art of successful living. It is a way of
healthy living at all levels. It is a tool for positive
change. It is the sovereign remedy for all worldly
miseries. It is the science of creativity and
personality development. It is a voyage of
discovering truth or knowing the reality. It is a
utilitarian commodity. Yoga is a total experience of
human life. Thus, yoga is as old as civilization.
Yoga is as old as mankind. Yoga is creation. Yoga
is intimate and ultimate. It is a living tradition and a
proven system of realizing divinity.

existing text, Rig-Veda. Rig-Veda is a composition
of hymns. Topics of the Rig-Veda include prayer,
divine harmony, and greater being.
We can divide Yoga basically in four categories:
1. Bhakti Yoga
2. Karma Yoga
3. Jyana(Gyan) Yoga
4. Raja Yoga
And the history of Yoga can conveniently be
divided into the following four broad categories:
Vedic Yoga – The yogic teachings found in the
above-mentioned Rig-Veda and the other three
ancient Vedas are known as Vedic Yoga.
Pre classical Yoga – Nothing but the sacrifices
and meditation. Shrimad Bhagwad Geeta
teaches all kinds of meditation techniques and
Jyana Yoga was also introduced in this era.
Classical Yoga – This is what most of us follow
and Maharishi Patanjali wrote the scripture i.e.
Yoga sutras of Patanjali. Eight types of yoga has
