IntroductionLand Rover recently released its top of the range Range Rover, (formerly known as the Range Rover Vogue.) The name change or shortening seems to be trying not to be confused with the extremely popular Range Rover Evoque. Nevertheless, the Range Rover Sport has been one of the major players in the Range Rover family. It has every new gadget from the Jaguar and Land Rover family and always been a very active member in the high society.
ExteriorThere is a very long list of what is jam packed inside this flagship model. Hence it is called The Autobiography Sport. All the usual luxury equipment is all found inside this top of the range car. What makes it stand out from the rest of the Range Rover Sports is its styling and the exclusive opportunity and flexibility to create the customers’ very own image via building their very own exclusively packaged luxury vehicle. An ultimate four wheel drive vehicle
came from a thoroughbred four wheel drive background, and dressed in a City Sleeker suit while performing exceptional off road function is considered rather rare in the 4 wheel drive motoring industry.
It has a very special package that accentuates the sportiness of this car. It includes two luxury orientated interior themes and five interior sub themes to offer 5 degrees of sportiness. From the outside, the autobiography has its unique Titan Front Grille, Titan Side Vent, Autobiography Sport 20 inches 9 spoke alloy wheels, stainless steel door tread pleas and body coloured door handles.

Jaguar and Land Rover family. With 375kW of power and 625Nm of torque, this is one of the strongest in the market. Fuel consumption is 14.9L/100km, as claimed by the manufacturer on a combined cycle. It has 31% more power and 14% more torque than the superseded 4.2 litre supercharged engine. The characteristics of this high efficient, spray-guided direct injection are reliable, efficient and extremely powerful.
TransmissionThe Range Rover Sport is supplied with a new ZF 6HP28 six speed automatic transmission with Adaptive Shift Strategy function. With a new gearing ratio, this enables optimum control and longer gearing for improved fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions. In particular the current set up already conforms to EU5 emission regulations. The Adaptive Automatic Transmission allows manual gear selection in high and low ranges. Also, the system studies the driver’s unique driving style, and then it produces a more personalized acceleration response and individualistic gear changing and a smoother performance.
What do people expect from a Range Rover Sport Autobiography? For improved safety and driving comfort, it has an Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with Advanced Emergency Brake Assist (AEBA) that uses the latest radar technology to scan the road 10 times a second. The main function of the system is to ensure matching the same (legal) speed with the vehicle driving ahead. It will then settle down and keeping with one of the 4 pre-set cruise gap distances. The system will set off Forward Alert in both audio and visual alarm signals when the distance to the vehicle in front decreases. Should the system detect a possible collision, it will prepare for emergency braking. For example, the system will apply full-force ABS stopping power, even if the driver only applies a light pressure on the brake pedal.
One of the safety concerns of all vehicles having a high centre of gravity is the risk of rolling over while encountering a sudden change of speed whilst hard steering and extreme cornering. The Roll Stability Control (RSC) works in conjunction with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) in try to minimise the risk of vehicle roll-over. If the system detents that the vehicle is approaching a crucial tipping point, it will reduce engine power and use the ABS to help reduce the chance of roll-over. This in turn will help maintain sure-footed control; especially in a critical driving condition.
What we found inside the Range Rover Sport AutobiographyWe found the build quality of the car is exceptionally high. The leather appointment, the buttons and interior finishes are exceptional. Basically, it has everything that we need and even never think of. It has a whole range of infotainment equipment that will keep everyone entertained. It includes: portable audio interface, hdd premium navigation, personal telephone integration system (bluetooth®capability), dual view (includes 1 set of whitefire headphones), voice control. Harman Kardon® LOGIC7® System: 17 Speakers, Active Subwoofer, DSP Amplifier (825 Watts). However, we found the Dual View screen very interesting, as it works with a HDD Premium Navigation system, the driver will be able to look at the quick loading and high quality on and off road map, whereas the front passenger will be able to watch their favourite DVD or TV program (audio is available via a headphone).
While we went for a long weekend drive, we found the car very responsive and comfortable partly due to its independence electronic suspension setting, and smooth gear changing. And partly because it has a very refined supercharged V8 petrol engine. The power of the engine is huge and the enormous torque is 615Nm, which made the acceleration a breeze. It seemed to be silky smooth and it can behave wildly as we put our foot down, it just darted straight ahead with a hint of roaring in the engine bay.
When coming across tight and twisty country road with sharp bends, it cornered the road like it was on a set of rail tracks. As we drove faster, we noticed that the law of gravity seemed to have no obvious effect on the relatively tall body structure. The body didn’t seem to roll nor should we say it was noticeable. We believe this is part of the Roll Stability Control and Dynamic Stability Control program.
Like most four wheel drives, we ventured into the concrete jungle. I would say, this is not a favourable territory for this mighty four wheel drive, as petrol fuel consumption call get to 15 litres per 100 litre or even higher actually, if there are more stop/ start traffic, it will become worse as stop/ start traffic uses more petrol than any other road condition. We didn’t get a chance to venture into the bush but, one obvious reason that we chose not to was because the approach angle for the nice looking front bumper, seemed to be more aerodynamic than giving a reasonable nice approach angle for off road drive. However, this is the kind of City four wheel drive that you want. It is a reasonably sized luxury body with a lot of power and torque, plus it has the ease of driving around in comfort and style.
