When I was a kid, I couldnot sleep unless a Iight was on. Darkness I found threatening. Something evil seemed to be lurki.ng in the darkness. No wonder that the verY first words of Cod we find in the Bible are, "Let there be lightl"Michelangelo painted an impressive illustration of these words on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel: Cod pushes away dark cloudsso that his Iight illumines the whole fresco: God manifests himself as light thatconquers the darkness. During the Easter Vigil, the Churchcelebrates in a beautiful and meaningful ritual this manifestation of God and of Christ the Lightof the world. The liturgy begins in darkness. Therewe light and bless first a fire and the huge Paschal Candle which is carried-through the nave of the church, stopping three times to chant the acclamation "Christ our Light," to which the assembly responds, "Thanks be to God." As the Paschal Candle is carriedthrough the dark church, all present receive candles which are lit from the Paschal Candle. With this, symbolically the 'lLight of Christ" spreads throughout the assembly and the darkness is conquered by light;the dark church is transformed into a place of warm light. This huge Paschal Candle that "conquers" the darkness is a symbol of the Risen Christ. When Jesus died on FridaY, the Synoptic evangelists describe thatmoment as a moment when darkness conquers light: From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon (cf Mt 27:45). And it wasdawn,at the time of sunrise, when Jesus rose from the dead-bringingnew light into the darkness. With these details the evangelists make a strong theological statement: ln his resurrection, Christ conquered the darkness of sin and evil. lt is like a new creation that is brought about by God's powerful words, "Let there be Light!" The readings during tl"re Easter Vigil lead as through the main stages of salvation historv, from the creation of the universe to the ProPhetical announcement of a "new covenant." The climax then comes when we hear the passage from Matthew's GosPel aboutthe Resurrection of Christ. The Paschal Candle is also present during baPtisms. The small candle of the newlY baptizedis lightedfrom the Paschal Candle, symbolizing thatin baptism "we wereburied with him... sothat as Christ was raised fromthedead... we, too, might livein newness of life," as we hear in the New Testament reading (cf Rom6:4). ln baptism *g lsss.iYs the light of the Risen Lord who once said,"l am the Lightof the world." Buf he alsosaid to hisdisciples, to us, "You are the lightof the world." Why? Because in baPtism thedarkness of sinandevil was conquered by the Light of Christ and we are tasked to let HIS Light shine intothe darkness of our often evil society. "Let there be light," Christ tells us. That iswhy we renew during the Easter Vigil (and in all Masses on Easter) our baPtismal oromises. We are reminded of what we are-Easter PeoPle- and what our taskas disciPles is-sharing the Lightof -God's lovewith our fellowmen. - Fr. Rudotf Horst, SVD ,.+,3=,F ;n: $",i=

Paul encourages the Christians, who were baptized into Christ, todie to their old sinful selues and torise to a new life in him.A reading from the Irtter ofPaul to the Romans

BROTHERS and sisters:Are you unaware that we who

were baptized into Christ Jesuswere baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with himthrough baptism into death, sothat, just as Christ was raisedfrom the dead by the glory ofthe Father, we too might live innewness of life.

For if we have grown intounion with him through a deathlike his, we shall also be united

with him in the resurrection. We know that our old self wascrucified with him, so that oursinful body might be done awaywith, that we might no longerbe in slavery to sin. For a deadperson has been absolved fromsin. If, then, we have died withChrist, we believe that we shallalso live with him.

We know that Christ, raisedfrom the dead, dies no more;death no longer has power overhim. As to his death, he died tosin once and for all; as to his life,he lives for God. Consequently, you too must think of yourselvesas being dead to sin and living forGod in ChristJesus.-The word of the Lord. All - Thanks be to God.

LAtry CHURCH,.AND MtSStON

Year of the Laity CatechesisFr. James H. Kroeger, MM

Cowfidewtlg eroJessing Owe's FnithThe Church's l i turgy for Holy Saturday, the Easter Vigil, is exceed-

ingly rich. One moving part of the cer:emony is the baptism of thecatechumens. Preceding the actual baptism rite, those about to be-come Christians are asked to profess their faith; they have completeda lengthy instruction in the fundamentals of the faith.

In celebration of the 2014 Year of the Laity, the phil ippine bishopsask the lay faithful to tru ly know their Christian faith. "Dear lay faithful, the greatest challenge for you is to know the content of your faith andto bear witness to your faith by a l ife of faith."

The bishops note that there are "two main deficiencies of the faithof our people: f irst, that the faith of many is uninstructed and, moreimportantly, that this, faith has been separated from life. So many ofour people do not even know the fundamentals of our faith... l ike thedivinity of Christ, the Eucharist...."

The renewal of our baptismal, vows on Holy Saturday should elicita personal commitment to deepen our knowledge of the faith wepossess and profess.
