11. Organic Farming

About the activity

For a healthy society , quality food without artificial chemicals is required.

After the Green revolution in India, more than 51% of the food products

that are sold are found to have residues of harmful chemicals. Promoting

indigenous, self-reliant, organic farming is the need of the hour.

The objectives of Organic Farming initiative are

• Promoting Swadeshi (Indigenous), Swavalambi (self-reliant) and

Savayava (Organic/eco-friendly) Krishi (Agriculture)

• Revitalizing local health traditions with safe agriculture and

environmental enrichment and promote a healthy eco-friendly lifestyle

• Imparting development education to the youth and empowering them

to play a constructive, non-political, non-partisan, development-

oriented leadership role

The activities under Organic Farming initiative are:

• Organizing farm experiments

• Documentation of indigenous knowledge systems and techniques (IKST)

• Collection of ancient texts/literature related to agriculture and allied

subjects

• Organizing units at village level

• Producer – Consumer Linkage Programs

• Organizing seminars, workshops and training sessions with regard to

organic agriculture

12. Marketing Organic Products

About the activity

Because of increasing health awareness and care for the environment

organic products are gaining popularity. However, the few branded organic

products available in the market are not only too expensive but their source

is also largely unknown.

Hence, initiatives like monthly Organic Mela at Rashtrothhana, Bangalore,

and also at Sahitya Kendra, Mangalore, have been started to bridge the gap

between the organic farmers and consumers by connecting the consumers

directly with the farmers. Plans to have mobile organic stores to go to

apartments and to tech parks in Bangalore are also in the pipeline.

Savayava Krishi Pariwara (Federation of Organic farming families) is

promoting this cause.

Example of residents coming together: LBS Nagar IT Milan members formed

a dedicated team called “Sakriya” (Savayava Krishi Abhiyaan) along with

members of LB Shastri Nagar locality.

Impact/Statistics

Though the initiative is in its infancy the support received by consumers is

overwhelming. As farmers are coming directly in contact with the consumers,

they are able to get the right feedback and inputs on consumer needs.

Besides, farmers working at ground level are getting better returns for their

produce.

14. Gou Samvardhana

About the activity

The cow is a great asset for countries like Bharat where agriculture is the

primary occupation. The Gou gives unlimited benefits to society like

food and nourishment, fuel, housing, medicines, farming and manure,

and environment.

Each year Rs. 90,000 Crores is earned with just the sale of milk & milk

products.

• Cattle save Rs. 40.8 Crores every year through assistance in farming /

agricultural related activities.

• Every year we are saving Rs.48,000 Crores by using Gomutra & Gomaya

products.

Widespread slaughter of cows in the name of “pink revolution” for meat

and other cow products is endangering the survival of our indigenous

cow breeds. Commercial demand for higher yielding hybrid cows has

become a serious threat to the indigenous breeds. Hence it is not only

necessary to protect the indigenous cow breeds but also save our Gou

Mata from being slaughtered.

Hindu Jagarana Vedike, Vishwa Hindu Parishat, Surabhi Goshala, Madhugiri,

Rashtrothana Goshala, Doddaballapur, Bharathiya Kisan Sangha these

are some of the organizations which have taken up Gou Samvardhana

activity.

Impact/Statistics

Rashtrothana Parishat and Surabhi Goshala are running Goshalas for

indigenous cow breeds since past several years. Due to the efforts of

various organizations awareness has been created regarding the

medicinal benefits of Gomutra, Gomaya etc. Awareness is also being

created on the importance of protecting the indigenous breeds and on

20. Green clubs in schools

Background

Green clubs were started in schools to bring about an awareness in students

on the need to protect the environment and nurture a desire in them for

a nature friendly lifestyle.Schools have been identified as the best places

to impart environmental awareness to the young minds through Green

they become society's primary agents of change.

Green clubs intend:

• To create awareness among students about the negative effect of

polluting the environment

• To set a fundamental corrective action required for regaining health

and comfort

• To ensure a pure and peaceful environment

The following Program are conducted in Green Clubs:

• Waste auditing: Waste collection, segregation and management

• Preparing compost: by using organic waste, compost can be prepared to

fertilize soil

23. Solid Waste Management

Background

Waste management is a growing challenge in cities. Government agencies

are struggling to find a solution this problem. There are multiple

organizations and people working to find a solution this challenge.

To develop Waste Management solutions, we need an integrated approach.

It involves working closely with the local administration, technology

experts and encouraging citizens to follow the prescribed methods of

handing over waste.

The Forward Foundation team is working on various aspects of Waste

Management, viz.,

• Improving collection from various streams and generators

• Designing and implementing Transfer solutions

• Developing end disposal solutions

Active civic engagement is one of the key factors in improving the behavioral

aspects of Waste Management. Volunteers play a big role in encouraging

people to hand over garbage and improve collection. This will solve one

of the wicked problems of garbage on ground caused due to

indiscriminate littering.

Work on eliminating litter by improving collection, involves the following

volunteering opportunities:

• Create Ward resource maps to identify the routes of Pourakarmikas and

Garbage collection autos. This will help us understand the efficiency of

door to door collection

• Take photos of litter spots and digitize it on the ward map

• Eliminate a spot by monitoring it for about 2 hours a day, for 2 weeks.

Our team will assist interested volunteers to get started.

41. Gou Samrakshana

About the activity

We Hindus believe Mother Cow is the embodiment of 33 crore Gods. The

Cow absorbs the 64 energies present in the nature through the Gomaya

(Cow dung), Gomutra (Cow urine), milk etc. These energies are transferred

by the Cow to help other living beings. That is why it is believed that all 33

crore Gods dwell in its Body.

However, the lakhs of Cows are being brutally slaughtered every year in

the name of religious ritual, for beef, for skin and other products and in the

name of Pink Revolution.

According to the law, only those animals which are older than 16 yrs of age

& are useless can be slain. However, now meat of young healthy buffaloes

between 4 months and 1 yr can be exported. The statistics of what is

happenings on the ground is very disturbing.

• Right now, there are 36,000 slaughter houses, of which 10 are highly

automated, where in daily 2,50,000 animals are hacked.

• Al-kabir (Hyderabad) alone is licensed to kill 6,00,000 a year. Deonar

(Mumbai) kills 1,20,000 Cows and 60,000 Buffalos. Kolkata based

slaughter house kills 12,00,000 Cows & Buffalos per year.

• Uttar Pradesh has granted license to set up 8 new mechanized slaughter

houses.

• Bharat is the top 5th country among BEEF producing Nations.

• Bharat is the top 4th country among BEEF exporting Nations.

• Around 1,000 cows are killed every day in Bangalore city. More than

10,000 in whole Karnataka.

• More than 100 illegal slaughter houses in Bangalore city, more than 1,000

in Karnataka.

• Illegal Transportation takes place across Karnataka to Andhra Pradesh,

Goa and Kerala

• Hindu Jagarana Vedike and VHP activists are participating in Gou

Samrakshana across Karnataka and preventing the slaughter and illegal

transportation of cows.

• Activists are monitoring the movements of illegal transport and filling

legal cases against those showing cruelty on cattle.

• Conducting Public Awareness progammes and Agitations.

• During bakrid festival when huge number of cows are slaughtered, the

special team of activists watch and block such illegal transportation.

Impact/Statistics

• In one year we saved more than 1,000 cows in Bangalore city and more

than 5,000 in Karnataka

46. Working in Unorganised Sector

About the activity

The number of women in the laborer is

higher in the unorganized sector. The

women laborer plays a major role in

Garment Industries, Domestic Workers,

Asha & Anganavadi. Majority of women

employees are engaged in the Garments

Factories (98%). Most of these women

are poor migrants from villages. They are

forced to work beyond the stipulated 8

hours per day, are harassed by the

management, get less than even

minimum wages, are exploited,

deprived of statutory benefits, offered

poor transportation facility, are not

given job cards and are not allowed to

form constitutionally permitted unions.

The Role of Unions

• Pleading in Wage Board to enhance the wages periodically

• Sorting out problems of employees - Employees Provident Fund,

Employees State Insurance Corporation, Maternity Benefits etc.

• Negotiating with management to improve working conditions of

employees

• Giving attention & suggestion to solve their domestic problems

• Educating the members legally and socially

• Giving importance and pressurizing the labor department to enforce

the laws strictly & effectively.

Organisation

Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh is a Trade Union with a difference. It is an “apolitical

trade union” which believes in genuine trade union activity inculcating the

national spirit in the minds of workers. The cyclic concept of “Nationalize

the labor, laborize the industry, industrialize the Nation” gives the idea of

what BMS is striving for in the labor sector.

Page 79: Samartha Bharata HANDBOOK.pdf

78

Impact

The BMS is the first Central Trade Union which organized Domestic

workers in the country by name “GHARELU KAMAGAR MAZDOOR SANGH”
