SALZBURGMost people associate Salzburg with Wolfgang AmadeusMozart or the movie "Sound of Music".
The city is certainly as beautiful in real life as it is on thesilver screen. Some of its features are straight out of afairytale – rustic medieval buildings, baroque gems andquaint little squares.

THE CITY #THECITY#
Salzburg was originally known as Juvavum,a trading stop on one of the RomanEmpire’s most important routes. Itdeclined during hard times after the Goths’attack on Rome, and as the western partof the empire declined, so did Salzburg. Allthat remained was a small village.
In 696 A.D. the city was revived. BishopRupert was so fond of the area’s beautythat he re-named it Salzburg after theriver Salzach, and made it an EpiscopalSee. His successors, the bishops WolfDietrich, Markus Sittikusand, and ParisLodron, were instrumental in creating theSalzburg we know today, especially itsmajestic Baroquechurches, palaces, andcastles. Most of the cultural treasures, including the Altstadt (the Old Town) andthe Hohensalzburg fortress, are in thewestern part of the city known asSalzachufer.
One of the world’s most outstandinggeniuses, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, wasborn here in 1756. His place of birth,Hagenauer Haus, still stands to this day.
After World War II, Salzburg became oneof Austria’s most important commercialcentres as well as one of its largest touristdestinations. One of the major reasons wasthe 1964 film "Sound of Music".
The new Salzburg, with its banks, railwayand bus stations, Mirabellplatz and manycheap hotels has sprung up on the rightside of the river (Rechtes Salzachufer).
