(01) 89900 www.westbahn.at Salzburg City – UNESCO World Cultural Heritage The unmistakable Salzburg skyline and numerous cultur- al monuments prompted UNESCO to declare the city’s historical district a World Cultural Heritage site in 1996 – putting it under very special protection. Salzburg is regarded as one of the most beautiful baroque cities north of the Alps; its silhouette, encompassing mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress, the cathedral and the baroque towers of the city, is unique. The broad plazas and narrow lanes, the prince-archbishops’ Residenz, the churches, abbeys and cemeteries, Mirabell Gardens and the characteristic “through-houses” all contribute to its incomparable charm – and all are within walking distance. DomQuartier Salzburg – more than one museum One tour, one ticket, one experience! 15,000 magnificent square meters, 2,000 astonishing exhibits, 1,300 years of colorful history. Former center of the prince- archbishops’ power, the complex comprising the Residenz and cathedral, along with Benedictine St. Peter’s Abbey, have once again been forged into a single ensemble allowing visitors to walk in the footsteps of the prince-archbishops. With a single admission ticket, this fascinating tour treats visitors to new and imposing views of the city, as well as hitherto unknown insights into its cultural heart. www.domquartier.at Salzburg Residenz This magnificent residential palace served as the seat of Salzburg’s prince-archbish- ops from 1120 on. The impressive early-baroque building acquired its present-day appearance at the end of the 16 th cent. Open for public viewing, the Prunkräume – which were once used for matters of state as well as the prince- archbishops apartments – feature several priceless frescos, paintings, tiled ovens, as well as the Residenz Gallery – which showcases European art of the 16 th to 19 th centuries. Standing in the center of the square outside is the Residenz Fountain, the largest baroque fountain north of the Alps. www.salzburg-burgen.at, www.residenzgalerie.at Mozart Square The focal point of this square is a Mozart monument, designed by Ludwig von Schwanthaler and officially unveiled in 1842 in the pres- ence of Mozart‘s two sons. Mozart‘s widow, Constanze von Nissen, did not live to see the ceremonies. Excava- tions uncovered a precious Roman mosaic floor with the inscription: “hic habitat (felicitas), nihil intret mali” (“here dwells happiness, may no evil enter”). The poet Georg Trakl was born in the “Schaffner House” on the nearby Waagplatz. Standing on the west side of the square is the Salzburg Christmas Museum, behind which is St. Michael’s Church, the oldest intact church in the city. Museum of Modern Art One museum – two buildings. Salzburg‘s Museum of Modern Art consists of two buildings in two spectacular locations. The Rupertinum, in the old part of town, is a baroque city palais built by the archbishops and located close to the Festspielhaus as well as the cathedral district. It was adapted for the purpose of presenting modern art. The museum on the Mönchsberg enjoys a prominent position overlooking the old city, while its new, modern architecture was custom-built to house large-scale exhibitions and collections of international stature. www.museumdermoderne.at Maria Plain Pilgrimage Basilica Maria Plain, on the northern edge of the city, has been a popular destination for pilgrims since the 17 th century. The basilica, built in 1674 by Prince Arch- bishop Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, is the village of Bergheim‘s most famous landmark, a popular place for excursions, also treating visitors to stunning panoramic views across Salzburg to the Alps beyond. W. A. Mozart was inspired here to compose his famous “Coronation Mass” in honor of a miraculous painting depicting the Virgin Mary. The Stations of the Cross are portrayed at 15 wayside shrines leading up to the basilica, erected in 1705. www.mariaplain.at Salzburg Open-Air Museum The 50-hectare grounds of this museum are located amid the Untersberg nature reserve in Grossgmain, a neighboring village of Salzburg. Visitors can explore over 100 original buildings once used by farmers, artisans, merchants and industry. A 7 km network of pathways inter- connects over 600 years of rural history. A pleasant 2 km-long ride on the museum train takes guests to various parts of the museum, and is even included in the entrance fee. A cozy museum restaurant, the “Salettl” – with a large outdoor dining area, and its own train stop – is the place to go whenever you get hungry or thirsty. www.freilichtmuseum.com Untersberg The Untersberg is the subject of many a legend and is a popular excursion destina- tion, offering a variety of hiking paths, a ski slope, bike routes, challenging climbing tours, magical ice caves, as well as friendly huts on and close to the summit. The mountain‘s primary attraction is its wonderful natural setting. The Untersbergbahn – a gondola lift operating year-round – carries visitors from the valley station in Grödig / St. Leonhard to the top of this scenic, 1853 m-high peak. With good visibility, you can enjoy 360° panoramas of the amazing alpine world surrounding Salzburg. www.untersbergbahn.at Salzburg Zoo Salzburg Zoo lies on the southern outskirts of Salzburg, home to some 1,200 wild animals and 140 species from around the world, living in generously- sized enclosures replicating their natural habitat as closely as possible, here on 14 hectares of grounds next to the Hellbrunn mountain. Imposing native species, such as the alpine ibex and chamois, live here along with jaguars, rhinos, lions and more. Alpacas, goats and many other creatures, big and small, love to be fed and petted by young animal lovers. Salzburg Zoo is open 365 days a year from 9 a.m. www.salzburg-zoo.at Salzburg Museum This museum for art and art history is housed in the magnificently renovated Neue Residenz on Mozart Square. Here, valuable objects of art, aesthetic presentations, interesting facts and multimedia installations all blend into a harmonious whole. Located right next door, the Panorama Museum features a unique cyclorama (26 m in circumference) by Johann Michael Sattler. It shows the city of Salzburg and its environs in ca. 1829. It is also the meeting point for tours of the world-famous carillon, which rings out from the archiepiscopal palace three times a day. www.salzburgmuseum.at Mozart‘s Birthplace Leopold Mozart and his family lived in the building at No. 9 Getreidegasse from 1747 to 1773. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born here on January 27 th , 1756. Today, the Mozart family’s apartment is a museum. Famous exhibits include the violin Mozart played as a child, manuscripts, authentic portraits and correspond- ence of the Mozart family, as well as original items of furniture. The Getreidegasse boasts elaborate wrought-iron guild signs, ornate doorways and idyllic arcades, and is very much the heart of Austria‘s most beautiful “shopping centre”. www.mozarteum.at The Festival Halls The main venue for the annual Salzburg Festival, Easter and Whitsuntide Festivals, as well as Mozart Week and Salzburg Advent Singing. This complex comprises the Grosses Festspielhaus (designed by Clemens Holzmeister, and one of the largest concert venues in the world), the Haus für Mozart, the Felsenreitschule – originally built in 1606-1607 by Archbishop Wolf Dietrich as riding stables, integrated step-by-step into the Salzburg Festival. Right across from here is the University, founded in 1622, home to the Great Hall, a venue where Mozart himself once performed, today one of the city’s most famous concert halls. www.salzburgerfestspiele.at Mozart’s Residence This house at No. 8 Makart- platz, first chronicled in 1617, was home to W. A. Mozart from 1773 to 1781. The first-floor rooms of the former Mozart family apartment were turned into a museum, dedicated to the history of the house and the life of Mozart’s family. Highlights: original forte- piano and violin, as well as the famous family portrait in the “Dance Master’s Hall”. Diagonally across from the house is Holy Trinity Church, the most important example of sacred architecture on the right bank of the old city and the first architectural creation of the great Baroque architect, Fischer von Erlach. www.mozarteum.at Linzer Gasse & St. Sebastian The Linzer Gasse is one of the most bustling shopping areas in the city. Cafés, bars, restaurants and many shops invite visitors to enjoy a stroll down this historical street, which is pressed tightly against the side of the Kapuzinerberg. Well worth a visit: St. Sebastian’s Church & Cemetery, de- signed in the style of an Italian campo santo. In this peaceful oasis, Leopold Mozart, Constanze Weber, Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau and Paracelsus all found their final resting place. A walk up the Kapuzinerberg is rewarding in its own right: past the Stefan Zweig Villa and abbey, up to the Franziskischlössl, where visitors can enjoy wonderful views. The Sound of Music The “Singing Trapp Family” from Salzburg were one of the most successful choirs in the United States in the 1950s. But they were also ambassadors for their homeland, Austria. Filming of the movie musical began in 1964, since when the interest in the original locations has been unabated. Recipient of five Oscars, with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer in the starring roles, the movie became a legend. Even today, over 300,000 visitors come to Salzburg annually, in order to sing DO-RE-MI on the stairway in Mirabell Garden, and to visit Schloss Leopoldskron as well as other locations in the city and the nearby Salzkammergut region. Churches in Salzburg Numerous churches and plazas in Salzburg reflect the 1,200-year history of the archbishopric, inviting visitors to take a stroll back in time. The mighty early- baroque cathedral, flanked by three squares, is the focal point of spiritual life in the city. Through its architectural ensemble, architect Santino Solari brought the flair of Rome to the northern world. The abbey church of St. Peter’s and the Franciscan Church lead us back to the Romanesque and Gothic Middle Ages. The Collegiate Church is testimony to the long tradition of science in Salzburg. With its stuccowork, it is a jewel of the High Baroque and one of the most important works of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. St. Peter‘s Cemetery St. Peter‘s Cemetery is one of the oldest and most enchanting cemeteries in the world. For more than 1300 years, it has served as the final resting place for many notable personalities, artists, scholars and merchants including Santino Solari (architect and builder of Salzburg Cathedral), Nannerl Mozart (Mozart’s sister), Michael Haydn (composer and brother of Joseph Haydn). The early-Christian catacombs hewn out of the rock face of the Mönchsberg are a special attraction, as are the monastery church, bakery and Stiftskeller restaurant. St. Peter’s Abbey is believed to be the oldest in the German-speaking world. www.stift-stpeter.at Mirabell Palace The palace was built by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau for Salome Alt, daughter of a Salzburg merchant. Today it houses the offices of the city authorities. The so-called “Angel Staircase” leads up to the Marble Hall, pre- viously used for representa- tive functions, where Leopold Mozart and his children Wolfgang and Nannerl often performed. Today it is considered one of the world’s most beautiful wedding halls. The Mirabell Gardens also feature numerous enchanting attractions, such as the fountains, the amusing “Gnome Garden” , wonderfully arranged flowerbeds, a maze and the “Hedge Theatre” . www.stadt-salzburg.at Walk of Modern Art Twelve internationally ac- claimed artists created sculptures for a wide variety of locations in the heart of this World Cultural Heritage city, now comprising the so- called Walk of Modern Art. These works by Anselm Kiefer, Mario Merz, Marina Abramovic, Markus Lüpertz, James Turrell, Stephan Balkenhol, Anthony Cragg, Christian Boltanski, Jaume Plensa, Erwin Wurm, Manfred Wakolbinger and Brigitte Kowanz are all within walking distance. This initiative for contemporary art in the public sphere was initiated by the Salzburg Foundation, while all of the works are owned by the Würth Collection. www.salzburgfoundation.at Hellbrunn In 1612, Prince-Archbishop Markus Sittikus commis- sioned master cathedral architect Santino Solari to build the Hellbrunn pleasure palace, to this day one of the most splendid examples of Renaissance architecture north of the Alps, with broad park grounds that make it unique in all of Europe. Permanent exhibition “GrandDelight: The unexpected world of Markus Sittikus” . Amid the world-famous Trick Fountains, you can still experience the same amusements the builder once treated his guests to: mysterious and mystical grottos, figures animated by water, and hidden jets squirting out from every nook & cranny. The “Monatsschlösschen” villa is now home to a folklore museum. www.hellbrunn.at Manner products are sold in approximately 50 countries worldwide. It is the biggest fully preserved citadel in Central Europe and a landmark of this City of Mozart visible from afar.
