We are getting ready to kick off our spring season. The team is very excited to get out and compete again and get the spring season started off on a positive note. We have been working very hard during the off-season and look forward to building on the progress we made from the fall and carrying it over to the spring. We leave for our first event on Friday, February 20th, and will play in the Snowman Getaway in Goodyear, AZ. The team will start with a practice round on February 21st with the tournament being played over 3 days from February 22nd-24th. The tournament features several teams that are highly ranked and should prove to be a good test of golf on a great course at Palm Valley Golf Course. If any of our Saluki followers will be in the Phoenix area during this time, we would love for you to come out and support us! The team has shown great work ethic and we are excited about the opportunity to get out and compete against some quality teams. We were able to play several rounds of qualifying after school and on the weekends to find out who would be traveling to this first event. Drew Novara came away as the low medalist in our qualifying and was followed very closely by Andrew Mitchell with each of these two earning an exemption to Arizona for their efforts. Joining these two players will be Wade Thompson, Steve Souchek and Charles Hawn, who all played a significant role during the fall semester. We have some very good news to share from some former golfers here at SIU. Brandon Cauldwell (2010-13) earned conditional status on the PGA Tour Latin America Tour over the winter break. Cauldwell clinched his status with a 22nd place finish at final qualifying in Sebring, FL, on January 20th-23rd. The Top 5 players on the Latin America Tour will earn full status on the Web.com tour the following season and the Top 50 players will earn full status back on the Latin America Tour. Best of luck, Brandon! Also, on the alumni front, we had a few past players play down in Florida for the PGA Senior-Junior Championship in Port St. Lucie on January 27th-30th. Former SIU standout, Brian Norman (2003-05) and Southern Illinois native, Mark Faulkner, finished tied for 5th in the 156 team field! Also playing in this event, were alums Jerry (1975-76) and Mike Tucker (1987), who finished in 23rd place and Steve Heckel (1966-1969) and Jason Stilley (1993-94) wrapped up in 54th place. Overall, a great showing by all of our former players and it shows that these guys can still play! Lastly, I would like to thank each and every individual that has sent in a donation to the SIU Men’s Golf Clubhouse Crew. Through your support and generosity, this program will thrive and we will be able to provide our student-athletes with world class experiences! In such a short amount of time, we already have over 50 people who have shown their support by joining the Clubhouse Crew! No matter what level you choose to join at, you can single-handedly impact our student-athlete’s lives for the better. Whether it is buying a new pair of golf shoes, a new golf bag, a rangefinder, or providing the necessary support to enhance our tournament schedule, your generosity will help our student-athletes have the best overall experience possible at SIU. The SIU community is what makes us all proud to be Salukis! Thank you very much for all of your emails, phone calls and letters. I couldn’t be more excited to help lead this program to new heights! If I can ever do anything for you, please don’t hesitate to call. Go Dawgs! Justin Fetcho Head Men’s Golf Coach Southern Illinois University SIUSalukis.com Twitter: SIU_MGolf

Player SpotlightCHARLES HAWN - FRESHMAN - WATERLOO, ILL.

RYAN HAXEL - JUNIOR - ST. LOUIS, MO.

WHO IS YOUR CURRENT FAVORITE PGA TOUR PLAYER?My favorite golfers change quite a bit because I like watching great golf. This year I am excited to watch Rory McIlroy, Patrick Reed, and hopefully Tiger Woods when he gets healthy again.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE ON THE SIU CAMPUS?My favorite place on campus is SIU Arena, I have a great time watching SIU basketball.

WHAT ARE YOU PLANNING TO MAJOR IN AT SIU?My major is Civil Engineering, I picked this major because my father is a Civil Engineer and I always enjoy going to work with my dad.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM SIU?Best memory I have from SIU would be making a 20 foot birdie putt on my last hole to shoot my first under par round for SIU.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SPOT TO EAT IN CARBONDALE?My favorite place to eat in Carbondale would be Buffalo Wild Wings with my teammates.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE SHOT DURING YOUR CAREER?My best shot I have ever hit would be my hole-in-one from 130 with a flighted pitching wedge.

WHAT IS THE BEST COURSE YOU HAVE EVER PLAYED?My favorite golf course to play is Dalhousie in Cape Giradeau. Members of the golf club are very generous and let our team come and play their golf course.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE ON CAMPUS?The Campus at SIU has great facilities that comfortably accommodate your academic and athletic needs. My favorite place on campus is the Troutt-Wittmann Center, which is designed specifically for student athletes to work hard studying or working out with team trainers.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE GOLF COURSE YOU’VE PLAYED?Old Head Golf Links, Kinsale, Ireland.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST MEMORY FROM SIU SO FAR?My best memories at SIU have been spent with my teammates. Feel lucky to have had such great teammates; it is a blast to go on trips with these guys. Pretty awesome to look back at the places we have gone as a team and the fun times we have had.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AFTER YOU GRADUATE?Upon graduating, I plan on working towards a career in Finance. From a golf standpoint, I have goals to play competitively after college and compete in many Amateur events.

IF YOU COULD TRADE PLACES WITH ONE PERSON FOR A DAY, WHO AND WHY?Rory Mcilroy. Who wouldn’t want to be the world’s greatest golfer?

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT MAJOR AND WHY?I am pursuing a Finance degree as well as a minor in Marketing within the College of Business. SIU is well known for their quality business school and I feel that my degree in Finance will serve me well in the years following graduation in May of 2016.

WHAT IS THE BEST PLACE YOU HAVE EVER VISITED?A couple friends and I went to Ireland with our dads for a golf trip. Played some of the worlds greatest links golf courses along Ireland’s southern coast. Awesome experience.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SIU?Coming out of high school, SIU seemed to be the perfect fit for me as a student athlete who valued a quality education and the opportunity to compete in the Missouri Valley Conference. Being a Saluki golfer is a cool experience, and I am glad to be apart of a team who works as hard as we do to accomplish our goals.
