SALPN ELECTIONS PRESIDENT ELECT - JANICE WAGNER, LPN

Over the past four years I have had the opportunity to sit as Member at Large for Zone 5 on the SALPN Council. I have enjoyed serving the membership. Given the opportunity to sit on SALPN council as President-Elect, I will increase my knowledge further and share that information with the membership. I will continue to be a strong voice for LPNs across the province keeping patient safety and regulation foremost. As president-elect, I will strive for visibility of LPNs and will provide leadership that is open and transparent. I will not lose sight of our vision. “Excellence in the regulation of Licensed Practical Nurses.”

MY VISIONMy vision for the LPN profession is for LPNs to evolve with the ever changing healthcare. Patient and family centered care, LEAN, collaboration, primary health care, leadership, and critical thinking are the “buzz” words in healthcare today. Never have we had so many changes and challenges in healthcare. As we move forward with our new bylaws I did not realize how pivotal the year 2000 was when the LPN Act was amended to reflect the more independent role of the LPN by removing the words “works under the direction of a physician, registered nurse, or registered psychiatric

nurse. As LPNs we need to be empowered by our knowledge, accountability, and working to our full scope of practice. I am excited to be part of the “I provide care” campaign which serves both as an external public awareness campaign and an internal celebration of who LPNs are. I proudly wear my Badge of Honor.

PROFESSIONAL BIOGRAPHYI currently work at the Weyburn General Hospital in acute care nursing and the majority of my thirty four year career has been spent in Weyburn. I spent three of those years working at the Fillmore Health Center in which I was team leader. In June 2012 I attained my diploma in Licensed Practical Nursing along with Advanced Foot care. I am a graduate of the Sask Institute of Health Leadership program and a participant of the 360 Leadership Workshop. I have been involved in our Weyburn LPN Chapter serving as secretary-treasurer several times and am an instructor of the TLR and PART programs in the SUN Country Health Region. On the provincial TLR and Part programs, I serve as a committee member. I have been involved with Releasing Time to Care at our hospital. Also, I am committee member of the Wound Care and Foot Care Committees of the health region. I also enjoy preceptoring students and mentoring a new employees. On SALPN, I am a member of the Policy Development committee and chairperson of the Awards and Recognition Committee.

PERSONAL INFORMATIONI am the proud mother of four sons and grandmother to two grandsons. Our family has grown now to include “daughters”. I enjoy spending time with my husband and family, gardening, travelling, baking, and reading. I have been so lucky to have found a career that I truly love! I love taking care of patients and their families and working with my colleagues. I always tell the nurses entering the nursing profession that with their newfound knowledge and my experience, we can provide the best possible care for our patients.

Please Note: Janice Wagner has been declared President-Elect by acclamation.
