AsIwritethisletter,wearecelebratingthearrivalofournewandreturningstudentstoSalemAcademy.It’sanexhilaratingtimeofyearhereatSalem–fullofbelovedtraditions,newacademicchallengesandblossomingfriend-ships–andwelookforwardtoitallsummer.It’sparticularlygratify-ingthatwe’veseena9.4percentincreaseinthenumberofboarding

studentsoverlastyear,anexcitingchangethatenhancestheeducationalexperienceofeveryoneoncampus.Alsoexcitingisthatthispastspring,wenotonlyfinishedourcombinedcampaignbyraising$76million(surpassingthegoalof$75million)butalsosurpassedtheannual-fundgoalfortheAcademy.Thankyouforyourincrediblesupportofthisinstitution,andpleaseseetheinsertelsewhereinthismagazineformoredetails. I’mdelightedtoreportthatweaccomplishedmanyotherimportantgoalsduring2008-2009,thefirstyearofourfive-yearstrategicplanfortheAcademy.Wefocusedonfourdifferentareas–fosteringacademicdistinction;estab-lishingapresenceasacenterforwomen’swellness;enhanc-ingtheboardingexperience;andenhancingfacilities–andIinviteyoutoreadmoreaboutthesesuccesseselsewhereinthismagazine.Hereisabriefrecap: Tofosteracademic distinction,weheldaverysuc-cessfulinternationaldayonMarch18withstudentpre-sentations,workshopsoninterculturalcommunicationsandguestspeakers;dedicatedaportionofournewwebsitetoglobalinitiatives;andhostedadelegationofChinesehigh-schooladministratorstoexploreafutureJanTermexchange.Toenrichtheboarding experience,weexpandedtheweeklye-newslettertoparents;designedasectiononthewebsitejustforparents;andmodifiedthedailyclassscheduletoincludeweeklyadvisor/adviseetime.Toestablishapresenceasacenter for women’s wellness,weconductedtwoAcademyassembliesthisyearonwellnessissues;beganregulargroupcounselingandsupportgroupstodealwithlifeissuesforourstudents;andcreatedaDADsgroup(Dis-cussionAroundDaughters)tohelpfathersbetterunder-standthelifeofthe21stcenturyteenagedgirl.Andfinally,webeganaperiodofenhancing facilitiesbyrenovatingtwofaculty/staffapartmentsinEmmaBahnsondormitoryand

Evenaswecelebrategoalsachieved,wearealreadyhardatworkonyear-twoofthestrategicplan.Justafewobjectivesduring2009-2010thatweareaddressingincludedesigningaJanTermtripoptionthatisservice-orientedandmoreaffordable;institutingaseated-lunchprogramforatleastonedayeachweekinadditiontotheexistingweeklyadvisorluncheon;establishinganherbgardentoprovidefreshseasoningsformealsservedtostudents,faculty,staffandguests;andcompletingtheinitialdesignphaseforreno-vatingtheShaffnerandBahnsonresidencehalls. Allofthesegoalshavebeendesignedwithourcorevaluesinmind.Oneofthosevaluesis“community.”Everyday,inahundreddifferentways,itmanifestsitselfattheAcademy.Itcanbeheardinthediningroomasstudentsen-joyMissShirley’schocolateygoodHelloDollieswithotherstudentsandstaff,ormeetwiththeirfacultyadvisorstotalkabouthowclassesaregoing.Itisvisibleontheplayingfieldsasgirlspasstheballtoeachotherinseamlesssynchroniza-tion.Itisintheexcitedvoicesofnewstudentsastheyfindoutwhethertheyare“Purple”or“Gold,”anditfillstheclassroomwhenastudentconveysherpassionforaparticu-larsubjectthroughathoughtfulpresentationtoherpeers. ThesenseofsisterhoodisnotconfinedtotheAcademycampus,however.Itispresentinthewiderworld,too,asourstudentscompleteJanTerminternships,takecoursesaroundtheworldandsucceedatcollegesanduniversitieswheretheybecomeleadersandscholars.And,asalways,sister-hoodshinesthroughourincrediblealumnae,whosupporttheAcademyinsomanywaysandarerolemodelsforourstudents. AtSalemAcademy,communityhasnevermeantunifor-mity.Sinceourfoundingin1772,eachgirlhasbroughtheruniquegiftstoourcommunity.Butthebondsofsisterhoodconnecteveryoneacrossdifferencesandprovidesupportaseachyoungwomantakesherownintellectuallifejourney,secureintheknowledgethatherindividualitywillbecel-ebratedandherplaceinthecommunityhonored.

TherewasatimewhenIenjoyedretrievingmynewspaperfromthefrontporcheverymorn-ing.I’mafraidithasn’tbeenmuchfunlately.Foroverayearnow,abouttheonlygoodfinancialnewsI’vebeenreceivinghascomefromthecouponsectionwhereIcansave50centsonajarofpastasauceatthelocalgrocer.Ofcourse,theyjackedupthepriceofthewhole-

wheatfettuccini,soit’sbasicallyawashatthispoint.Onthebrightside,atleastI’mnotlosinganygroundwhenitcomestodinner. Whenitcomestotheworldofinvestments,however,it’sdifficulttofindmuchinthewayofgoodnewsthesedays.Betweenbanks,insurancecompanies,autocompaniesandtheoverallstockmarket,itseemsthatwhateverappearedto

Thisisawarmandcaringcommunity,buttherearenopathsofleastresistanceonwhichtotravelaroundhere.Itisaverydifferentworldthantheonemostteenagersexperience. Ratherthanseeingtheirhighschooldaysthroughtheso-ciallens–boyfriends,cliques,cafeteriadrama–ourstudentsseetheirexperiencemuchmorethroughtheacademiclens,asinwho’sthetoughestteacher,whatgirlisamathwiz,Ihaveanotherrewritetodotonight,etc.Weexpectmorefromourgirls,andtheydeliver. Asaresult,I’mconvincedtheyarefarbetterpreparedforcollegeandbeyondthanthevastmajorityofhighschoolgraduatesoutthere.It’snotthattheywon’tbechallenged;it’sjustthatthey’vealsobeentaughttofaceandembracechal-lengeratherthanshyawayfromit.Itisforallthesereasonsthateverygraduationday,ratherthanlookingaheadtothefuturefortheirfirstgreataccomplishment,ourstudentswillbeabletolookbackandseethereallybigonethey’vejustputintheirpocket.

Every high school hands out diplomas, but not all high schools are created equal. – Sjolund

beagoodinvestmentayearorsoagohasgoneintothetank.Andyet,regardlessofhowotherinvestmentsaredoing,Icanassureyouthatthere’sonethatwillcontinuetoincreaseinvalue:anAcademyeducation. Everyhighschoolhandsoutdiplomas,butnotallhighschoolsarecreatedequal.GraduatingfromSalemAcademyisanextraordinaryaccomplishment.Ittakesawholelotofcharacterandaverydeterminedspirittopushthroughtotheend.Indeed,it’ssomethingthatdoesnotcomeeasilytoanyone,becauseitmeansacceptingamorechallengingwork-loadinaculturethatoftenseeksthepathofleastresistance.

Aristotlesaid,“Educationisthebestprovisionforoldage.”Indeed,thethreethingsthatwetalktoourstudentsaboutonaregularbasis–thethreethingstheytruly“own”–aretheirfaith,theirhonorandtheireducation.Whenthevaluesofalltheotherassetsareheadingsouth,theinvest-mentstheyhavemadeinthesethreeessentialareaswillserveasaportinanystorm. ThesearethevalueswespeakofeverydayattheAcad-emy,whichiswhyIbelieveourfamiliescanpatthemselvesonthebackwhenitcomestoinvestingintheirdaughter’seduca-tion.Thisoneissuretopayoff!

TheMayDellwasbrightandsunnyonSaturday,May30asseniorsandtheirfamilyandfriendsassembledforcom-mencement2009. SalemAcademyisknownforitsmanytraditionsduringcommencement.OneistheannouncementoftheannualFacultyAward,andanotherishavingthefirstandsecondhonorgraduatesandtheseniorclasspresidentspeakduringgraduation. TheFacultyAwardismadeeachyeartoaseniorwho,intheeyesofthefaculty,mostclearlyexemplifiesconsistenttrustworthiness;maturityinrelationshipswithpeersandadults;ahighdegreeofconcernandconsiderationforothers;consistentresponsibilityinfulfillingobligationsbothcom-munalandpersonal;andthecourageofherconvictions. The2008-09winner,nichole Forvour-Mcnew,fromNewJersey,wasafour-yearboardingstudent.Shewasanhonorguideandamemberoftheyearbookstaffasaninthgrader,andbythetimeshereachedhersophomoreyear,shewaselectedtoserveasamemberoftheHonorCabinet.Shewasreelectedtoserveinthiscabinetduringeachofherre-mainingyearsatSalem.Shewasthe2008-09HouseCouncilpresidentthisyearandtheco-chairoftheArtsExhibitioncommittee.ThedaughterofLoriandFranklinMcNew,Nicholeisnowafirst-yearstudentatRutgersUniversity. Thefirststudentspeakerforcommencementwasthesecondhonorgraduate,Rebecca Call.Rebecca,afour-yeardaystudentfromLexington,NC,wasafour-yearrunner,captainandleadership-awardrecipientincrosscountry.ShewasamemberoftheSpiritensembleandasectionleaderinGleeclub.ShewasaUnitedWayvolunteer,teacher’sas-sistantatDiggsElementaryandoneoftheverybesthonorguidesintheAcademy.Ontopoftheseactivities,Rebecca

COMMenCeMent 2009wasaNationalMeritfinalist;amemberoftheNationalHonorSociety;andaparticipantinMuAlphaTheta,theMathematicsface-offteam,FrenchhonorsocietyandtheFrenchandecologyclub.Shewonthe2008SummerVen-turesCatalystAwardinscienceatAppalachianState.Shealsoreceived,thedaybeforeSalem’scommencement,thepresti-giousDobbinsExcellenceinScienceawardandtheJessByrdEnglishAward.ThedaughterofJanetandChristopherCallofLexington,NC,RebeccaisnowinUNC-ChapelHill’ssix-yearpharmacyprogram. Thesecondstudentspeakerforcommencementwasthefirsthonorgraduate,Molly deCristo.FormoreonMolly,whoalsoreceivedtheSisterOesterleinawardfor2008-09,seepage6. Thethirdandfinalstudentspeakerforcommencementwasseniorclasspresident,QuinnCartall,afour-yearboard-ingstudentfromSanAntonio,Texas.Quinnwaselectedtobeonthestudentcouncilasaninthgrader,andalsoservedduringthesenior/facultybreakfast.Sheplayedthreesports-fieldhockey,basketballandsoccerthatyear–andwasamemberoftheculturalaffairsandSpanishclubs.Asasophomore,shewastheclassvicepresident,playedfieldhockeyandgolf(wasrookieoftheyear)andwasalsopartoftheinterviewcommitteeforthenewheadofschool.Duringjunioryear,shewasclassvicepresident,Spanishclubpresi-dentandFellowshipCouncilrepresentative.ThedaughterofRebeccaandBryanCartallofSanAntonioTexas,sheisnowafirst-yearstudentatQueensUniversity.

CharlesVofFrance.Thismechanicalclockbroughtregulari-tytolife,workandtomarkets;itgavetimeitselfanewvalue.IthenrealizedthatthisiswhatIconsidertobeoneof,ifnotthemost,valuableofresourcesinthisworld.Timeisrequiredforallwedo.Itistheprerequisiteforallthatwebecome. Eachofusisallottedthesame,exactamountofhourseveryday.Toooften,however,wefeelthereisnotquiteenoughofitinanygivenday.Timeisaspecialcommoditythatcannotbesavedforlaterandwaitsfornoone;ifwasted,youcannotgetitback.Timeisoftensaidtofly,butitisnotsomuchthetimethatfliesaswewhowasteit;andwastedtimeisworsethannotimeatall.“Iwastedtime,”Shake-spearemakesRichardIIsay,“andnowtimedothwasteme.” Forthisreasonthegiftfromtheseniorclassof2009isatomicclocksthroughoutthebuilding.Ihopetheseatomicclocksbringasmuch,ifnotmore,regularitytoyourlifeandwork,astheydidintheyear1360.Mayourgifttoyouhelpinrealizingthetruevalueofeveryminuteofyourtimehere

atSalemAcademy.Andwhoeverremembersthiscanneverwillinglywasteasinglemomentofhisorherlife. Ifurtherencourageyoustudentstospendyourtimewisely,notonlyintheclassroom,butalsowithfriends,fac-ultyandfamily.Cherishitdearlyandchoosewiselybecausebeforeyouknowit,you,too,willbestandingwherewearetodayinyourwhitecapandgown,andyourtimespentherewillalltoosoonbereducedtomemoriesgonebefore.Thankyouforallyourtime,notonlytoday,butalsothesepastfouryearsbecausetome,yourtimeisinvaluable. Fellowclassmates,wehavethefortuneofhavingmadefriendshipsthatwilllastalifetime.Iwanttothankyouforbeingmyfriends,andalwaysbeingbymyside.Iloveyouguyssomuchandamveryproudofyounotonlyforbeingwhoyouareandwhoyouhavebecome,butalsoformakingitthisfar.Wedidit!

SalemAcademyseniorMollyDeCristoofWinston-SalemreceivedtheElisabethOesterleinAward–theschool’shighesthonorforamemberofthegraduatingclass–dur-ingFoundersDaycer-emoniesheldinApril.TheOesterleinAwardisnamedinhonorofSalem’sfirstteacherwhenitwasfoundedas

aschoolforgirlsin1772.CandidatesarenominatedbymembersoftheentireSalemcommunity–faculty,staffandfellowstudents–andeachnomineemustcompeteagainstothertrulyoutstandingseniors.Amongthecrite-riaare:attendSalemallfouryearsofhighschool;makeanotablecontributiontothequalityoflifeatSalemandexemplifyqualityleadership;andbeconscientiousanddiligentinthepursuitofacademicexcellence,attainingatleasta3.0averageoverall. DeCristowasnamedthefirsthonorgraduatefortheseniorclass.Shewasacommencementmarshalforgrades9-11(anhonorreservedforthestudentswiththetopGPAintheclass)aswellasamemberoftheNationalHonorSociety,NationalLatinHonorSocietyandNa-tionalSpanishHonorSociety. member,theUCLAstudyoffersthefirst-everpeer-reviewedresearchonthesubject.Eversinceeducatorsobservedthatgirlstendtoslideinconfidenceandacademicachievementinearlyadolescence,interestingirls’schoolshasrisen.Yet,single-sexeducationhasdefiedrigorousanalysisduetocon-foundingdemographicandotherinfluences.Theresultsofthisnewstudy,drawnfromalargeblindsampleofalumnaefromcoedandgirls’schoolsacrossthecountry,giveeduca-torsmorefactstosupporttheirtheories. AccordingtotheUCLAreport,girls’schoolgraduatesconsistentlyassesstheirabilities,self-confidence,engage-mentandambitionaseitheraboveaverageorinthetop

atthestartofcollegecomparedtotheirpeersfrom coedschools. • Morethan80percentofgirls’schoolgraduates considertheiracademic performancehighly successfulcomparedto75percentofwomenfrom coedschools.Ontheintellectualfront,60percentof womenfromgirls’schoolsreportself-confidence, comparedto54percentfromcoedschools. • Nearlyhalfofallwomengraduatingfromsingle-sex schools(or44.6percent)ratetheirpublic speaking abilityhigh,comparedto38.5percentofwomen graduatesofcoedschools.Asimilardifferentialexists forwritingabilities:64.2percentofgirls’school graduatesassesstheirwritingashigh,comparedto 58.8percentwomengraduatesofcoedschools. • Girls’schoolgraduatesarethreetimesmorelikely thantheircoedpeerstoconsiderpursuingacareer in engineering;or4.4percentcomparedto1.4percent. • Moregirls’schoolgraduatesconsidercollegea steppingstonetograduate school(71percentversus 66percentfromcoedschools)and45percentof womenfromsingle-sexschools(comparedto41 percentoftheircoedpeers)chooseacollegeinpart foritsrecordofalumnaegainingadmissionto graduateschool. LuciaUldrick,directorofadmissionsatSalemAcad-emy,saysthefindingsreinforcewhatsheandotheradmin-

10percent.Comparedtotheircoedpeers,theyhavemoreconfidenceintheirmathematicsandcomputerabilitiesandstudylongerhours.Theyaremorelikelytopursuecareersinengineering,engageinpoliticaldiscussions,keepcurrentwithpoliticalaffairsandseecollegeasasteppingstonetograduateschool,thestudyfound. viewpoints,theirbackgrounds,eventheirclothesandthewaytheyworetheirhair.Thereweresomefreespiritsthen,ofcourse,buttheyexpressedthemselvesinfairlyconserva-tiveways. Today’sAcademyisalittledifferent.DuringtheyearsthatI’vebeenhere,weasaschoolhaveworkedveryhardtodevelopadiversecommunitywherethereismutualac-ceptanceandsupport,andwhereeveryoneisfreetobewhotheyare.Thereisamoreobviousmixthesedaysofraces,religions,geographicalbackgroundsanddifferentviewsoftheworld,buteveryonestillislikedandaccepted.Andwe’velearnedfromotherstudents,too.Inthe1980sand1990s,wehadalargenumberofstudentsfromtheMiddleEast,andtheirexperiencesandperspectiveonworldeventswasvaluabletoallofus.Thisyearwe’llhave47interna-tionalboardingstudents,manyfromAsia,andtheyalsowillenrichtheAcademyexperience. Anotherdifference,Ibelieve,isthatfewerstudentsareattheAcademywithoutbeingactivelyinvolvedinchoosingtogohere.Thisisnolongeraschoolwhereayounggirlistoldshe“must”attendwhethershewantstoornot.Visi-torstotheAcademyremarktomethateverysinglepersonseemshappytobehere:theysmile,theyhaveenergy,they

engageonallsortsoflevelswithanyoneoncampus.Thereisnosenseofstudentsorstafforfacultybeingherebecausetheyhavetobehere. Somethingswillneverchange,however,abouttheAcademy,andthoseareourcorevalues:senseofintegrity,abeliefinthehonorsystem,feelingpersonalandsocialresponsibilityandhavingawillingnesstobechallenged.ThosewerevaluesthatledtheSingleSisterstoopenaschoolthateducatedgirls,andtotaketheboldstepofspinningoffacollegewhenthosegirlswantedevenmoreeducationthanwasavailable.TheMoravianswereextreme-lysuccessfulatchangingwhatneededtobechanged,butkeepingthebasicsalive,andIthinktheywouldbehappywithtoday’sAcademy.Theymightevenhavebeenamongthefirsteducatorstoembracethenewtechnology! I’verealizedthatevenstudentswhostrugglehereatfirst,ordon’tfinishhere,feelapositiveconnectiontotheAcademy.Forexample,IcanthinkofastudentwholeftafteronlyoneyearbutstillvisitstheAcademyeverysum-merandwantsherdaughtertoattend.ShestillfeelspartoftheAcademy.Ialsothinkofayoungwomanyearsagowhocameasaninthgrader,wenthomeovertheholidaysandlockedherselfinherbedroom,refusingtogoback.Herpar-entstookthedooroffitshingesandpersuadedhertogiveitonemoretry.ShespentfourhappyyearsattheAcademyandisnowaverysuccessfulattorney. Don’tworry,somanyofthe“old”traditionsarestillverymuchapartofAcademylife.Everyoneiseitheragoldorpurplewhentheycome.StudentsstillserveattheholidayLovefeast,westillputcharmsinthesmooshcaketopredictseniors’futures.Thetagroomisstillwhereeveryonechecksinandout,andwestillhaveseniordaywherethecarsaredecoratedinallsortsofamazingways.ThesamewonderfulHelloDollysaremadewiththesameoldrecipeandstillpopularinthediningroom! Youmightsaythatthetrappingsmaybedifferentintoday’sAcademy,butthecoreisthesame!

blitz hOPPe ReCeiveS MeDalEleanorElizabeth“Blitz”Hoppe,daughterofMarkandBetsyHoppeofWinston-Sa-lem,earnedtheCongressionalAwardGoldMedalandwasrecognizedataceremony,receptionandweek-longcelebrationheldinJuneinWashington,DC. TheCongressionalAwardistheUnitedStatesCongress’

awardforyoungAmericans.Itisnon-partisan,voluntaryandnon-competitive.Theprogramisopentoall14-to23-year-olds.Toearnagoldmedal,participantsmustcompletemorethan400hoursofvolunteerserviceaswellasexcelinthreeotherareas:personaldevelopment,physicalfitnessandexpe-ditionsandexplorations. HoppegavehervoluntaryservicehourstoSalemAcademyaswellastoSalemtowneMoravianRetirementCommunityandtheChildren’sCenterforthePhysicallyHandicapped,wheresheremainsactive.Forthepersonalde-velopmentarea,shestudiedfortheSAT,researchedcollegestowhichsheisinterestedinapplyingandstudiednutritiontobecomebetterinformedaboutlong-termhealthandfit-ness.Forphysicalfitness,shepursuedbothteamsportsandindividualsports,aswellasastrength-trainingregimethatresultedinbetteroverallfitnessandendurance.Herexpedi-tionsandexplorationsrequirementconsistedoftakinghikesandplanningtripstocitiesshehadnevervisited. TheElsieNunnHeadmas-ter’sAwardwasestablishedinhonorofElsieNunn,oneofthemostdistinguishedteachersinthelonghistoryofSalemAcad-emy.AmathematicsteacherattheAcademyfor40years,MissNunnunderstoodthatgreatteachersdoalotmorethanjustteachtheirsubjectmatter.Shededicatedherlifetoherstudents,

becameinvolvedintheirlivesoutsidetheclassroomandwasalwaystherewhenneeded. ThepurposeoftheElsieNunnHeadmaster’sAwardistorecognizefacultyatSalemAcademywhoreflectthespiritofresponsibilityanddedicationtoservicewhichMissNunnexemplified. Well,formanyyears,there’sbeenasmallgroupofwomenatSalemAcademythatIbelievehavetakenthatversetoheart.Inaschoollikeours,notalltheteachingisdoneonablackboardorinrowsofdesks.Indeed,thelessonsofworkethic,devotionandloyaltyareallhollowlessonsifthey’renotbackedupbylivingexamples.Weneedpeopleofcharacter–namesthatwecanpointtoandsay,“Seethisperson…watchher,anddowhatshedoes.”Weneedrolemodels,andIcanthinkofnonebetterthanthreeladieswith

HelloDollies,SalemRolls,CrazyCakeandawholehostoffabuloussoupsformoreyearsthanmostofushavebeenonthisplanet.Andeverybatchismadewiththesamedevotionshehadwhenshemadeherfirstbatchhalfacenturyago. Finally,MissThelmahasmovedbeyondthe50-yearmarkandisworkingonyearnumber54.Forthosehealth-consciousfolkswhosuggestfriedchickenisn’tgoodforyou,Isubmitthey’venevertriedMissThelma’sfriedchicken.Iguaranteeyou’llfeelgoodaftereatingit…andthatgoesforhermeatloaf,too!Formorethanhalfacen-tury,wehavecountedonMissThelmatoministertothiscommunitythroughhergiftofcooking.Itmatterstoher,justasitmatterstotheothertwoladies,thatshegetsit

MissShirleyhasjuststartedher50thyearattheAcad-emy.Shehasbeenbackinthekitchenmakingherfamous

righteverytime.AsfarasI’mconcerned,shehasn’tmissedyet. Thesearethreeofthefriendliest,mostencouraging,honestandhard-workingemployeesSalemhaseverhad.Andmostofwhattheydo,theydowithoutfanfare.Theyquietlyshowupeverydayandgoabouttheessentialbusi-nessofmeetingoneofourmostbasichumanneeds–theneedtofeelloved. DaDS leaRn abOut DaughteRS in aCaDeMy SuPPORt gROuP Arecentstudyestimatesthatwhilemothersspendanaverageofeightminutesadaytalkingtotheirdaughters,fathersspendonlythree.That’sastatisticthatconcernsDADs(DiscussionsAroundDaughters)–avolunteergroupformedbyfathers–andtheyaredeterminedtochangeit,atleastintheirownfamilies. That’swhylastspringagroupofvolunteerfathersformedtheDADsgroup,whichmeetsmonthlysothatmembersmaytalkabouttheirdaughters.Thegroupisprimarilymadeupofdadswholivelocally,althoughallAcademyfathersarewelcometoparticipatewhentheyareintown.Theonlyruleisthateveryoneagreestoconfi-dentiality,allowingthedadstomorefreelyexpresstheirthoughtsandconcerns. OnememberofDADs,KarlSjolund,iswearingtwohats:he’snotonlytheHeadofSchoolbutalsothefatheroftwingirls,aged12.Sohisroleispartlytohelpguidethediscussion–makingobservationsaboutAcademyproceduresandpolicies–andpartlytogainknowledgehecanapplyathome. Topicsforeachmeetingaredecideduponbythegroup.Onemeetinglastspringcoveredtechnologyandhowtexting,Facebookandother“socialnetworking”op-portunitiesareaffectingthelivesofgirls.Anothertime,thegroupheardaboutissuesfacingteenagegirlsfromspeakerJennyOrr,thefulltimecounselorattheAcademy. Orrtalkedaboutfivedifferentissuesthatmanycoun-selorsareseeingwhentheydealwithtoday’steenagegirls:self-injury,suchascutting;eatingdisorders(anorexia,bulimiaandBED,orbingeeatingdisorder);depression;anxiety;andwhatshecalled“peersandparents,”orthepressuresassociatedwithfriendsandfamilyexpectations.Sheledthedadsthroughadefinitionofeachissueandhandedoutworksheetsthattheycouldtakehomeandread. Orrassuresthedadsthattheirdaughtersareingoodhandsatschool.“Sadly,thesearecommonissuesinhighschoolsacrossthecountry,”shesaid.“Thedifferenceat

SalemAcademyliesinournurturingcommunity.Thegirlstrulywatchoutforeachotherandfeelfreetoexpresstheirconcernsiftheyseesomeonewhoisstruggling.Thatisnotalwaysthecaseatotherschools.” “Althoughthegrouphasonlymetafewtimes,Ihavefoundittobeverybeneficial,”saysJimDeCristo,fatheroftwoAcademydaughtersandinvolvedagaininDADsthisfall.“Sharingthechallengesparentsfaceandhowtheyaddressthemprovidesyouwithnewapproachestosolv-ingproblemsandmoreimportant,mayhelpyoutoavoidmistakes.”

Duringthe08-09schoolyear,theAcademyengagedFinalSite,awebdevelopmentcom-pany,tohelpupgradeSalem’swebsite.We

neededawebsitethatwaseasytoworkwith,hadup-to-dateinformationforcurrentandprospectivefamiliesandwastrulyrepresentativeofourstudentbody.FinalSiteworkedwithSalemtocreateabeautifulwebsitethatiseasytouse;itwasunveiledinMarch2009andiscertainlyseeingincreasedtraffic(forexample,therewere8,164sitevisitsbetweenAug.1andSept.1,2009). Intoday’sboarding-schoolmarket,manyfamiliesusetheinternetastheirfirst“visit”toaschool.Studentsand

theirparentsfindoutmuchoftheirinformationonlineandthendecidedwhichschoolsareworthvisiting. Alsoimportantisbeingabletoshowvideosofspecialeventsastheyhappentoprospectiveaswellascurrentstu-dentsandfamilies,andthenewwebsiteallowsustodothat.Otherfeaturesofthenewwebsiteincludeathleticsschedules(alongwithdirectionstoeachplayingsite);theabilitytoworkthroughthesitetodesignandsendcomplementaryelectronicnewsletterstoparentsofstudentsandtoalumnae;andaschoolwidecalendarthatisautomaticallyupdatedeverysingleday. TheprotagonistofThe TempestisthebanishedsorcererProspero,rightfulDukeofMilan,whouseshismagicalpowerstopunishandforgivehisenemieswhenheraisesatempestthatdrivesthemashoreonhisisland.TheplaytakesplaceonthatislandwithnativeinhabitantsArielandCalibanstirringupbothromanceandmischief.WhilenotinitiallyoneofShakespeare’smostpopularplays,scholarsnowconsideritoneofhisgreatestworks. SeveralfeaturesmadetheAcademy’sproductionofThe Tempestanespeciallyentertainingonefortheaudience.ThecharacterofArielactually“flew”thankstotheeffortsoftheinternationalflyingcompanyZFX,whichinstalledaspecialflyingharness.Also,allpartswereplayedbytheAcademy’sfemalestudents–whichwasacontrasttoShakespeare’sdaywhenallparts–eventhoseofwomen–wereplayedbymaleactors. Thisfall,theAcademyTheatrewillperformDearly De-parted,byDavidBottrellandJessiJones.TheperformancedatesareNovember12-15. AccordingtodirectorKerryLawson,theplayissetintheBaptistbackwoodsoftheBibleBelt,wherethebelea-

guredTurpinfamilyprovesthatlivinganddyingintheSouthareseldomtidyandalwayshilarious.Despitetheirearnesteffortstopullthemselvestogetherfortheirfather’sfuneral,theTurpins’otherproblemskeepovershadowingthesolemnoccasion.Amidstthechaos,theTurpinsturnforcomforttotheirfriendsandneighbors,aneccentriccommunityofmisfitswhojustmanagetopulltogetherandhelpeachotherthroughtheirhoursofneedandfinally,thefuneral. Plansareunderwayforaspring2010presentationofJane Eyre,amusicaldramawithmusicbycomposer-lyri-cistPaulGordonandabookbyJohnCaird,basedonthenovelbyCharlotteBronte.ThemusicalwasfirstdebutedonBroadwayin2000,andreceivedanumberofTonynominations(bestmusical,bestbookofamusicalandbestoriginalscore,amongothers). Jane Eyre,setinEngland,intheearly19thcentury,beginswiththedeathofJane’sparentsafterherfather,apastorworkinginanurbanslum,isexposedtotyphus.Janegoestolivewithheronlyknownrelative,Mrs.Reed,thewidowofhermaternaluncle.Mrs.Reedandherchil-dren,however,havelittleusefortheorphanJaneandtreatherwithopencontempt.WhenJanerebelsagainsttheirilltreatment,sheissentawaytoLowood,anightmarishchar-ityschool. Eventually,JaneescapesLowood,takingapositionatThornfieldHallwheresheservesasgovernesstoAdèleVa-rennes,theyoungwardoftheabsentmasterofThornfield,EdwardRochester.ButasJanegrowstoloveRochester,shebeginstosuspectthatthehouseanditsmasterharbouradarksecret. TheSalemAcademySistersMeritScholarshipprogram,whichcoversroom,boardandtuitionaswellasspecialacademicopportunities,isyieldinggreatresultsforSalem:wonderfulstudents.Initsthirdyearawarded,theSistersScholarshipbroughtussomeofthebeststudentsfromaroundthenation. TheSistersScholarshiphasgrownoverthepastyear,fromhaving15nominationsandfivefinalistsfor2008,to27nominationsandsixfinaliststhisyear. WeareveryhappytoreportthatallsixoftheSistersScholarshipfinalistsareattendingSalemincludingtheSistersScholarfor2009,KierstenWashle.KierstenisfromMt.Holly,NorthCarolinaandjoinsusasafreshmen.KierstenhashadmanyacademicsuccessesandbeeninvolvedwithcommunityserviceinMt.Holly.ThescholarshipcommitteewasimpressedwithherworkwiththeJuniorPresidentialYouthInauguralConference.KierstenworkedtoraisemoneytoattendtheinaugurationofPresidentBarackObamainJanuary2009. Ireallywantedtodowasmakethisparticulargiftonethatwouldcoveritemsyoudon’talwaysthinkabout,”Townsendsays.“Hementionedthehead’sdiscretionaryfundtome,andIknewitwasaperfectfit.” Thehead’sdiscretionaryfundisjustasitsounds:afundthattheheadofschoolcanusetomeetimmediate,directneedsoffaculty,staffandstudentsattheAcademy.WithTownsend’sbacking,Sjolundwasabletoimplementhisvisionforstudents:anewprogramdesignedtoinvolvestudentsinregularlyscheduledmeetings,outingsandotheractivitieswiththeiradvisors.StudentsnowmeeteveryTues-daywiththeiradvisorsinsmallgroups,andatothertimesasneeded.Thenewprogramwasabigsuccessandwillbe

InanefforttoengagethenewestgroupofSalemalumnaeinannuallysupportingSalem,theAlumnaeBoardcollectivelyissuedachallengetotheAcademyclassof2009.Theboardofferedtomatchtheseniorclasscon-tributiontotheinstitutionupto$480.Priortothefinalboardmeetingofthefiscalyear,theseniorswerecontactedvialetterandvideoaboutthiseffort.AttheMay2009luncheonwiththeseniors,approximately10membersoftheclasscontributed$5eachtotheannualfund.Kudostotheclassof2009fortheirpar-ticipationinthisnewventure. AcademyseniorMaryCarolHarrissays,“Inmyfirstyear,mymotherhandedmeapledgeenvelopeandtoldmetofillintheblanks.Now,asasenior,mymonthlypledgerepresentsalltheamazingteachersanddedicatedadultswhohelpmeeverydayworktoachievemydreams.” MaryCarol’smother,CarolHarris,isthemodelforherdaughtertodevelopthehabitofgiving.“MymonthlypledgetotheAcademyfollowsafamilytraditionofgiving,”saysCarol. Giftsfromstudents,parents,alumnaeandfriendshaveallowedSalemAcademyandCollegetoreachthefiscalyear2008-2009AnnualFundgoal.Alumnaegivingwas81percentofthetotalamountgiventotheSalemAcademyAnnualFund.SalemCollegeAnnualFundalumnaegivingwas86percentofthegiftstotheCollege. butalsoexcelled,tothepointthatlastyearshebecamethecommandingofficerofPatrolCoastal(PC)CrewLIMAandtheUSSSQUALL(PC7),oneof14Cyclone-classpatrolcoastal(PC)ships.Thatmadehertheonlyfemaleonboardship,leadingacrewofthreeofficersand24enlistedmen. It’sseeminglyanidealblendofbothstructureandvariety.ThePatrolCoastal(PC)squadronconsistsof13dif-ferentcrews(ALPHAthroughMIKE)and10ships,fiveofwhicharelocatedinLittleCreek,VAandfiveinManama,Bahrain.The13crewsrotatethroughoutthe10ships,serv-ingabouteighttoninemonthsonashipinLittleCreekandthensixmonthsdeployedtoashipinBahrain. Q: you decided to take a gap year between the academy and college. what led you to think about this in the first place? A:Therewereseveralfactorsinvolvedinmychoicetotakeayearoffofschool.Atthe

Academy,Igainedanincredibleamountofknowledgeintheclassroom;IlearnedmuchmorethanIcouldevenremember.Ilearnedaboutlifeinadorm,aboutteamwork,aboutpublicspeaking.AndasaresultofthisknowledgeIgainedalotofconfidence.ButIfeltlikemyconfidencewasbolsteredbythecomfortoftheknown.Ihadconfidence,butonlybecauseIknewthatothershadconfidenceinme–thatwaseasy.MymainreasonfortakingagapyearwassothatIcouldtryreallifeforawhile.

Q: what do you mean by “trying real life?”A:Iwantedtolearnoutsideoftheclassroom.Iwantedtoseetowhatextentmyconfidenceandbook-knowledgewouldhelpmeintherealworld,andtowhatextentitwouldn’t.IknewIwasgoodatschool,andIhadbeencomfortablewiththatforfouryears.Iwantedtotrysomethingthatwouldchallengemeindifferentways;Iwantedtobeuncomfortableforawhile.ThisisnottosaythatSalemdidn’tchallengeme.Itdefinitelydid.Iwasjustlookingforanewkindofchallenge.

A:IwasinKentuckyservinginAmeriCorpsatanon-profitcalledLend-A-HandCenter.ThecenterisinthemountainsofsoutheasternKentucky–anareaculturallyandpoliticallyknownasAppalachia.TheprogramIservediniscalledSUCCESSCorps,andmyprogram’sgoalsweretoimplementtheParentsasTeacherscurriculum–asetofchild-developmentinformationforparentsofchildrenages0-3.

Q: what were your primary responsibilities? A:Imadehomevisitsandhostedgroupmeetingsforparents,andthenIalsoplannedatleastonecommunityserviceprojecteachmonth(thoughIusuallydidseveralmore).Myresponsibilitiesatthecenterincludedtutoringchildrenafterschool,transportingmedicalpatientstoappointments,takingcareofthefarmandgenerallybeingagoodneighbor.

Q: you were one of the academy’s top students. what did the academy do to prepare you for your experience in kentucky? A:BeingasuccessfulstudentatSalemtakesalotofhardworkandexcellent-timemanagementskills.I’vedefinitelyworkedhardthisyear,eventhoughIhaven’tdonemuchacademicworkatall.Andtherehavebeenseveraldayswhereitwashardtogeteverythingdoneintheday(muchlikemyexperienceatSalem).ForafewcrazyweeksthiswinterIworkedwithanothergirltohelpafamily(withfivekids,fourofthemgirls)getridoflice.Ittookseveralhoursadaytocombthroughthechildren’shair,soIhadtomanagemytimeextremelywelltogeteverythingelsedone.AnotherthingIlearnedasastudentastheAcademywasthatitwasn’tworthitifIwasn’thavingfunandIwasn’tlearning.ThisyearI’vemadesurethatbotharehappening.EvenwhenIwasworkingwiththekidstogetridoflice,Istillhadagreattimeinteractingwiththechildren,andIlearnedaLOTaboutpatience,diligenceandsacrifice.

Q: what were you perhaps nOt as prepared for in terms of your gap-year experience? Q: would you recommend a gap-year experience to other young people? why or why not?
