Jubilee Year of Mercy June 5, 2016 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Half the liturgical year 2016 is completed after six months of extraordinary celebrations. The Incarnation mystery: Jesus’ advent, nativity, epiphany. The Paschal mystery: Jesus’ passion, death, resurrection, Pentecost’s Holy Spirit. The solemnities of Holy Trinity and Jesus’ Body and Blood. Today the Church resumes Sundays in Ordinary Time, but with a Gospel of extraordinary mercy: Jesus raises a dead man to life. Yet the one who benefits most from his extraordinary mercy is not the dead son but his widowed mother. With her husband and only son deceased, this woman’s material support, in that patriarchal society, had vanished. So had her emotional support, leaving her helpless, abandoned, on society’s “peripheries.” One of Pope Francis’ hopes in calling this Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is to transform us into more extraordinary Christians, by making our caring outreach to just such vulnerable people, and our practical self-sacrificing love for them, our ordinary, daily, Christian way of life! —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Our parish is filled with caring, generous people who understand and embrace the Annual Pastoral Appeal and all the good that it brings to our parish and to our diocese. It is a true witness to our Catholic Faith when the uni es of faithful, generous people provide resources for our diocese to evangelize and seek those in need of Christ. Your generosity to the Annual Pastoral Appeal supports the mission of Jesus Christ; we are able to bring his love and mercy beyond our parish walls. Thank you to all who have given a sacrificial gi to the Annual Pastoral Appeal. You have reduced our parish obliga on and helped to advance the outreach of our faith. If you have not yet made a gi , it’s never too late. Let your faith be your guide. Open the Door to Mercy and par cipate in this appeal for our parish and for those in need throughout our diocese.

“And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’” LUKE 7:13
This verse is a great reminder that the Stewardship lifestyle is one of service, putting God first and to “love one another.” Unfortunately today, many people have “passion” for activities they enjoy - their job and off-work activities. Many times our “passion” to excel is at the expense of someone else. Maybe we need to focus on a little less passion for our individual concerns and a lot more compassion for others.

Strangers
During his public ministry, Jesus traveled across the country. His dress and speech made him stand out as a stranger. He knew what it was like to be away from home, to not know anyone, and to be branded as a foreigner.
Next time you see someone obviously from another place, think of Jesus and make him feel welcome.

God of the Exodus you led your people out of slavery in Egypt and brought them to a land flowing with milk and honey.
God of the Exile, you restored your people after their captivity in Babylon and settled them in the holy city, Jerusalem.
Watch over and protect all who travel.
Guide their steps with your outstretched arm, and at the end of their journey lead them safely home to their loved ones and friends. Amen.
Did you know that demographic studies estimate that more than 1/3 of all
Catholics are not registered in a parish?
Please encourage your friends and family to register!
Registering is important because:
• If a parish doesn’t know who is out there, how can it adequately serve the needs of all - especially singles, divorced or young families who may not see the need to register?
• Registered parishioners receive helpful information about our parish.
• Registration is needed to obtain Baptism/Confirmation sponsor form. Registering is easy. Registration forms are available in the parish office, the narthex and on the parish website.
If your child or children have
reached the age of 21 and are away at school or no longer residing with you, please encourage them to register at a parish where they currently reside. Establishing church membership is very important. Should they be asked to serve
as a Godparent or Confirmation Sponsor, their parish of residence will need to verify their church membership and attendance and provide them with the required documentation. Please feel free to call the parish office at 746-9422 if you have any questions.

Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we return to numbered weeks rather than seasons or solemnities. We are told stories of two widowed mothers whose only sons have died. They find themselves grief-stricken and alone. Jesus was himself the only son of a widowed mother so his compassion for the grieving mother described in Luke is especially poignant. What is perhaps surprising is that it takes something as catastrophic as the loss of a son and his restoration for the mothers and the crowd to recognize that God is in their midst. Through their personal experience of death and resurrection, they recognize God, but a God who had always been present to them, even from their mother’s womb. Today’s readings ask us how we recognize God in the face of terrible loss and suffering.
GOD IN OUR MIDST In our reading from First Kings, Elijah visits the house of a widowed mother whose only son falls ill and dies. Elijah, calling upon God, restores life to her son. The grieving mother recognizes Elijah as a man of God only after he restores her son to life. In Galatians, Paul fails to recognize God in his presence even as he is persecuting and trying to destroy those who follow Christ. Through God’s grace, Jesus Christ is revealed to Paul, who then proclaims that reality. In Luke, another widowed mother’s son has died and is restored to her through the compassion of Jesus. In each instance, God is there, with the mothers and with Paul, waiting to be recognized. God is only recognized, however, when what is most precious, most beloved, most central to the life of each person has been lost and restored, has died and been resurrected.
TURNING MOURNING INTO DANCING These readings tell the all-too-familiar story of loss and death. Each also tells of resurrection, life restored. Death and darkness transform our lives in profound and terrible ways. But our faith promises us that there is a dawn, a resurrection when we will rejoice. There is a time when our mourning will be transformed into dancing. These readings remind us that we can choose the time of rejoicing and dancing because it is with us now, even as death, despair, and darkness seem to overwhelm us. God is in our midst if only we will recognize the light, the joy, the dance that is present in our lives and within our world. If we choose the darkness, then we will not recognize the presence of God. If we choose to rejoice and dance even in the face of loss and death, then will our mourning be transformed. Then will we know God in our midst.
HOPE AND LIFE
Today’s readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow’s only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all hope. Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God that he describes in today’s second reading. What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we might touch a life with the Good News. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Prayer for Protection During Hurricane Season
O God, Master of this passing World, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of
Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude.
You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have
no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake
from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional
boundaries, invade our land, and spread chaos and disaster.
During this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so
vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of
time.
O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our beloved Mother, we ask you to
plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where stormless eternity awaits
us.
Amen. [Written by Most Rev. Maurice Schexnayder), second Bishop of Lafayette (1956-1972), following Hurricane Audrey in 1957]
