FROM MY HOUSE
TO YOURS
Dear Parishioners,
It’s not fair! How many times have we heard this
from our kids or uttered these words about our boss or, God
forbid, felt this way about God?
The Jewish community in Judah and Babylon in the
time of the prophet Ezekiel certainly felt that way about
God, at least until they came to a greater understanding of
God’s promises to them through Ezekiel’s words of judg-
ment and encouragement. Ezekiel speaks for God when he
tells the people that it is because of sin, wickedness and lack
of virtue that punishment has befallen them - not that suffer-
ing and difficulties have come to them because God is
unfair. They learn they are responsible for their own
actions: if they do what is right and just, they will live; if
they do not, they will die.
This same encouragement - yes, encouragement! -
comes to us from St. Paul in his letter to the Philippians.
For as we heard from Ezekiel, the promise of life is not
based on things beyond human capability. In fact, it is based
on our human free will and capacity to choose that which is
good and right and just. And St. Paul tells us how. He says,
and it’s quite simple really, Do nothing out of selfishness or
out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more
important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own
interests, but also for those of others. Have in you the same
attitude that is also in Christ Jesus.
Have the same attitude of Christ Jesus, who –
remember - was fully human even as he was fully divine.
This is encouraging because it means it is something we can
do, with Christ’s help. We can, through the practice of
virtue and with God’s grace, choose that which is good and
which is life-giving. Even when our human faults and weak-
nesses cloud our understanding, we can still choose to
follow God’s command, as the first son in today’s gospel
reading did. We may not know why he initially refused, but
we know by his actions that he is the one who had the same
attitude as Christ because he did as his father asked.
Let us do the same. Trust in God’s promises, rely
on Christ’s help and allow the grace of the Holy Spirit to
work in us - that in all we might do we have the attitude of
Christ.
God Love Ya!

All Souls Envelopes All Souls Mass A special Mass will be celebrated on
November 2nd
, 2017 at 7pm in St. Richard
Church for all of our deceased members of
our parish family who have returned home to
the Lord, especially those who have passed
this year. We invite you to join us for the
Mass and to use the special envelope
provided in your packet and return it before
November 2nd; in order that your loved ones
name may be placed on the altar for this
Mass and be remembered during the month
of November.
ST. RICHARD PARISH
FAMILY MASS
What Is a Family Mass? A Family Mass gives children and their families a greater sense of participation in the Sunday Mass of the parish. We have Bill Monaghan, a guest musician who leads us in song using a blend of traditional and contemporary songs. Bill and his ensemble incorporate keyboard, guitar, drums, and trumpet into their ministry for a very uplifting and energetic celebration of Sunday Mass.
How Can We Participate? While the Family Mass is open to everyone in the parish, families are invited to serve in the various liturgical minis-tries during Mass. Families are invited to participate as lectors, gift bearers, altar servers, and greeters. If you would like to participate as a family or volunteer an individual in your family, please contact the Director of Faith Formation, Maryellen Carroll. We will practice with the Lectors (Readers of Sacred Scripture) and give instructions to the other volunteers. This is a wonderful opportunity for the rest of the parish, especially the elders, to see the parish families participating at Mass. You can volunteer for one Mass or more.
When Is the Next Family Mass? There are six Family Masses scheduled for this year. The Mass time is 11:30 AM at St. Richard Church. The dates are: October 1, 2017 November 5, 2017 December 3, 2017 January , 2018 February 4, 2018 April 8, 2018
Need More Information or Want to Become Involved? Please contact Maryellen Carroll, Director of Faith Formation, at 215-468-4777 or at [email protected].
Thanks for considering this opportunity and may the Holy Spirit guide us
in both word and action every day of our lives.
Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 1, 2017
Today’s Liturgical
Celebration Summary
One of the themes for Mass today is the bounty of God's
mercy. We see repeatedly in all of the prayers for mass
today; the Entrance Antiphon, the Collect, the Eucharistic
Prayer, and the Communion Antiphon, a reference to it.
Even the responsorial psalm reminds us as we sing:
Remember Your Mercies, O Lord.”
In addition, we learn in both the Old Testament and the
Gospel that God’s mercy is a balm that forgives our sins.
Ezekiel tells us that if we “turn from our wickedness...
and do what is right...we shall preserve our lives!”
We see in the second reading from St. Paul that we should
care for our neighbor “... by not looking out for our own
selfish interests but also for those of others.”
This message is repeated in our hymn during the
Presentation of the Gifts ‘The Cry of the Poor.’
St Matthew reminds us in the Gospel that those we
consider sinners are entering the kingdom of heaven long
before we are because we are not faithful to our
commitments to God.

October 1st is a significant day in the Roman Catho-
lic Church. It is the Feast of the “Little Flower”,
Saint Therese of Lisieux. It also is the date of the
canonization of Philadelphia’s own Saint Katharine
Drexel. Two spiritually powerful women who we all
could look up to on our own journey of faith. “For me, prayer is an aspiration of the heart, it is a
simple glance directed to heaven, it is a cry of
gratitude and love in the midst of trial as well as
joy; finally it is something great, supernatural,
which expands my soul and unites me to Jesus.” (Saint Thérèse de Lisieux )
“If we wish to serve God and love our neighbor
well, we must manifest our joy in the service we
render to Him and them. Let us open wide our
hearts. It is joy which invites us.
Press forward and fear nothing.” (Saint Katharine Drexel)
